Omaha senator to introduce "Caylee's Law"
July 15, 2011

Hundreds of emails have made it to the inboxes of Nebraska state senators since July 5 -- all in the aftermath of Casey Anthony's acquittal.

Most are form emails sent by constituents asking for a new law in the state that would make it illegal for a parent, legal guardian or caretaker to delay notifying authorities about the death or disappearance of a child.

Omaha Sen. Pete Pirsch is the first to say he will introduce a version of Caylee's Law, named for Caylee Anthony, the Florida 2-year-old whose mother was acquitted July 5 in her murder.

Lincoln Sen. Tony Fulton and Sen. Lydia Brasch of Bancroft also are researching the potential law, a version of which at least 20 states are considering passing.

Pirsch still is researching the wording for the bill and what time period would be reasonable to report a child's death or disappearance.

"What we are trying to do is protect young, vulnerable kids in Caylee's situation," he said.

A violation of the potential law would be a felony.

"We are dealing with foul play, not the simple neglect of kids," he said.

Fulton has been talking to Brasch about the introduction of Caylee's law, too. Other senators also may be researching the law.
