Mom to ask Coronado council to reopen mansion death case

5:15 p.m., Sept. 17, 2012

CORONADO — The mother of Max Shacknai, the 6-year-old who died in July 2011 at his father’s Coronado mansion, will address the Coronado City Council Tuesday in an effort to get the Police Department to reopen its investigation into her son’s death.

Dina Shacknai insists that her privately funded investigation shows that Max’s death was not accidental, as authorities ruled, but the result of an assault.

Police investigators and the county’s Medical Examiner’s Office have reviewed the conclusions reached by experts Shacknai hired and have refused to change their opinion that the boy’s death was a tragic accident. (snip)

I've not read anywhere, in all this time, about the safety of riding a scooter and wearing a "helmet"; did Max EVER do any of this?

Quote from General Warning: According to the manufacture of the "razor" scooter it clearly states. "USING A SCOOTER CAN BE A DANGEROUS ACTIVITY AND MAY RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH EVEN WHEN USED WITH PROPER SAFETY PRECAUTIONS."

"Always wear safety equipment such as helmet, knee pads and elbow pads. Always wear a helmet when riding your scooter and keep the chinstrap securely buckled."

Pro Model scooters are for children ages six (6) and above. Children under age eight (Cool should ride with adult supervision at all times.

I wish her luck.  As Kathleen Savio's family found out, sometimes it is hard to fight the system.  I think that Max's death and Rebecca Zahau's death are both being put a little too neatly away.

Seeking clues from the dead
April 27, 2013

SAN DIEGO — Dr. Jonathan Lucas, San Diego County’s chief deputy medical examiner, is used to the polarized reactions he gets when he tells people he works with the dead for a living.

“Either they think it’s the most interesting thing in the world, or they find the soonest opportunity to either talk about something else or leave.”

Lucas trained as a forensic pathologist on the streets of New York, his time there capped off by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. He spent three weeks processing victim remains before flying to San Diego.

In his 12 years here, he has never been in the spotlight more than in 2011, when the mysterious deaths of Max Shacknai, 6, and Rebecca Zahau, 32, at Coronado’s Spreckels mansion captured global attention.

He conducted autopsies on both, concluding with help from sheriff’s investigators that Max’s death was an accident and Zahau’s was suicide by hanging.

Now, he is second-in-charge of the county Medical Examiner’s Office, which investigates about 3,000 deaths each year.

Q: You performed the autopsies in the Coronado mansion case, which gained global attention and remains controversial. Tell me about that experience, and how it feels to be second-guessed.

A: It was an interesting phenomena. You really end up relying on your colleagues and focus on the facts, because you know everything’s going to be second-guessed. ... While we were in the middle of the investigation, we weren’t rushing anything. But there was a lot of pressure — What are the answers? How come you guys are taking so long? What’s going on? — but we still took everything to its conclusion. ... And then once we put the facts out and put our conclusions in, then people were, ‘Oh my gosh, you guys rushed to judgment.’ ...

I tell people I thought the first day that it was homicide, that was where I was in my head for Rebecca, but the investigation followed. ... It was the perfect example that you can’t do the investigation on public pressure, or pressure from families. You just have to do what you believe is the right thing.

The house is on the market and may gain new owners, but there will always be a cloud over it because of the deaths of Max and Rebecca.  People die in homes all the time, but these two deaths are so questionable imo.  No make over can change this.  JMHO

Rest in peace Max and Rebecca.   an angelic monkey an angelic monkey
