Revealed: Aruba suspect took out $1.5m accidental death policy on Maryland woman days before she disappeared
By John Stevens
Last updated at 4:09 PM on 17th August 2011

A U.S. tourist detained in Aruba after the suspected death of his travel companion took out a $1.5 million accidental death policy on the Maryland woman days before they travelled to the island, it has been revealed.

 ::snipping2::

Video shows the pair at the Rum Beef Bar & Grill in the Baby Beach area of the island where Ms Gardner went missing.
Restaurant staff have told investigators that the woman seemed woozy while they ate.

Surveillance footage also shows Giordano in his rental car at the back of the restaurant, but the car had tinted windows so no one else in the vehicle can be seen.

Police said that they found blood on a rock behind the dive shop at the restaurant.

The water doesn't look significant enough if Robyn went in it to not have
her body wash back on shore by now.

Translating this material is hard, since there aren't many Papiamento translators online that REALLY work.

Since their language is derived from Spanish, Portuguese, and some other, translators only translate the words they recognize.

Since I know Spanish and Portuguese, I can make sense out of what the newspaper articles say, but cannot translate word for word.

Anyway, how did he get the insurance policy without the policy holder being present?

Maybe he told the insurance salesman that she was his common-law wife, or live in girlfriend.

I agree, the insurance agency could not hand over the $1.5 mills without a proper investigation, and I cannot believe he thought he could get away with it.

I'm sure he was thinking that, like Natalee's body, her body would not be recovered, thus not showing that he murdered her.

From that article, it said that blood was found on a rock by the beach. Was there mention of a condom? Or is that one of my bad translations?

You can buy travelers insurance through your travel agent, or even on line without talking to anyone.    It is not necessarily just life type insurance, but covers, medical evacuation, hospitalization,  trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other things.

Thanks, everyone for all the great info.

Regarding the insurance, my understanding of travel insurance is to cover the cost of the trip, tickets, hotel, etc., in the event of trip cancellation, hurricane, etc.  As well, special medical insurance can be purchased to cover medical bills, evacuation or transport home for care, or in the event of death, transport of your body home.

AD&D (Accidental Death and Dismemberment can also be purchased, but the beneficiary could never be someone who has no relationship.  Usually a large death benefit amount must be justified.  As in the loss of decedent's earnings calculated over their estimated life expectancy, or in the loss of stay at home mom, the cost for husband to hire nannies and help to raise surviving children, etc.

makes more sense it was just travel insurance.  Not sure why they would state 1.5 million value of policy.  That seems like misinfo, IMO.  As well, the source stated was "Aruban Police source".

getting travel insurance for a trip makes a lot more sense than life insurance..we have purchase travel insurance a lot..just in case we have to cancel out etc...that type of insurance? not familiar with trip insurance where there is a beneficiary though...

I agree.  Though I have previously purchases travel insurance many times for both my husband and I, I don't remember there being a place to determine the beneficiary.

Good video and article at the link...also interview with Taco Stein, cannot confirm or deny bloody hand print on rock among other things.

He can confirm investigating the insurance policy.

Missing in Aruba: Suspect Took Out $1.5 Million Insurance Policy
Aug. 17, 2011

Authorities in Aruba are investigating an insurance policy taken out by Gary Giordano before his trip to Aruba as a possible motive in the disappearance of missing Maryland woman Robyn Gardner.

The investigation into the $1.5 million accidental death policy on Gardner -- which names Giordano as a beneficiary -- has been confirmed exclusively with ABC News by a police source in Aruba, as has the fact that he purchased the pricier one-year policy over the cheaper, more commonly purchased five-year policy.

<snipped>

Authorities said that that they found blood on a rock behind the dive shop at the Rum Reef Bar & Grill, which is the last place the two were seen together.

Investigators also told ABC News of Giordano's other erratic behavior at the time of the disappearance -- including that he left the search early to get some sleep at his hotel.

Three days after the search for Gardner began, Giordano got within feet of leaving the country before he was stopped at Aruba's airport, after passing through security and U.S. customs -- where he told customs he had to change flights because of weather, and inexplicably told officials that his travel companion was "taking another flight." When arrested, authorities say Giordano was drenched in sweat.

Could it be the Robyn Gardner's body was inside the trunk of the rental vehicle at this point in time?

Was the rental vehicle confiscated and forensically investigated?

from what I can remember, the vehicle had already been cleaned and I thought that on the NG show they said that it had not be confiscated at the time of the program...if I recall correctly..

There is no actual Papiamento translator online that I know of.

This one is Papiamentu, and sometimes it helps but it's still hard to decipher some things no matter how hard I try...

IMO the type of human trafficking is more along the lines of women forced into prostitution in Aruba that came from Columbia or another South American country.
