New name in Holly Bobo murder case

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - A new name has come up in the case of murdered nursing student Holly Bobo: sex offender Terry Britt

His name came up in court for the first time last week, but it’s not the first time we’ve heard it.

The mother of two of the murder suspects, Cindy Adams, said his name will come up when this long-awaited trial finally gets underway.

Britt’s wife told News 4 Britt was with her the entire day that Bobo vanished. She was adamant Britt had nothing to do with her kidnapping rape or murder.

The TBI would not say whether they ever formally cleared Britt.

Prosecutors said they aren’t allowed to talk about potential witnesses or testimony before trial.

Britt is currently in the Northwest Correctional Complex serving time for aggravated kidnapping and attempted rape convictions. He’s scheduled to get out of prison in November of 2018.

Holly Bobo: No blood evidence found on corroded gun
Published 3:29 p.m. CT Aug. 18, 2017 | Updated 4:04 p.m. CT Aug. 18, 2017

SAVANNAH — No blood was found on the gun prosecutors have called a "critical piece of evidence" and believed to be the weapon used to kill 20-year-old Holly Bobo in 2011.

Court documents say Jennifer Nichols, the lead prosecutor in the case, told defense attorneys that the gun was found "near John Holladay Road in Decatur County, Tennessee." Nichols provided a photo of an "extremely rusted revolver," court documents say.

That revolver, an Arminus .32-caliber, was tested by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on May 26, according to a Memphis Crime Lab report filed in Hardin County Circuit Court. The report says the revolver had to be cleaned because it was not operational when the TBI lab received the gun for testing.

The report says the gun does not match any investigations, and no blood was found on the gun.

Another motion filed by defense attorneys for Zachary Adams has requested that the judge not allow skeletal remains to be presented as evidence during the September trial because photos and witness testimony is expected to describe the condition of the remains. Prosecutors responded to the motion, saying in court documents that "a victim's bones are not so inherently 'horrific' as to require their exclusion from trial."

A trial for Zach Adams is scheduled to start with final jury selection on Sept. 9, and opening statements at 9 a.m. Sept. 11. Adams is charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated kidnapping and aggravated rape in Bobo's death.

Been awhile since I have checked in on this case and I can honestly say I am astonished that it still has not started.  How awful for her family.  Prayers that a resolution to this happens soon.

Holly Bobo: Witness expected to present alibi for Zach Adams
Published 1:24 p.m. CT Aug. 23, 2017 | Updated 2:16 p.m. CT Aug. 23, 2017

SAVANNAH — Attorneys for Zach Adams have filed documents that identify three witnesses they expect to call during Adams' trial in September.

One of those witnesses is expected to testify to Adams' alibi.

Adams is facing charges of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated rape in the death and abduction of 20-year-old nursing student Holly Bobo in April 2011.

The witness, identified as Rebecca Earp, has been subpoenaed to testify, court documents say.

The documents say defense attorneys will file a notice of any additional witnesses if they are identified.

Two other witnesses identified in court documents are listed as experts in handwriting and cell phones. Court documents say Jon Reeves, of JDR Telecom Solutions in Virginia, will testify to the locations of cell phones on April 13, 2011, the day Bobo was reported missing.

Another witness, Larry Miller, is expected to testify to "the authenticity of handwriting in the event a witness denies that he/she wrote a document." Miller works with the department of criminal justice at East Tennessee State University.

Reeves and Miller are identified as expert witnesses for the defense. Both notices were filed Wednesday morning.

I sure hope so.  It has been so so long since this happened to Holly.  I cannot begin to imagine what she went through at the hands of these scumbags.  It is time they all pay for this senseless act.

New Developments Emerge Regarding Evidence In Holly Bobo Murder Case
By: Nick Beres

SAVANNAH, Tenn. - There's nothing to link the gun to the murder of Holly Bobo. That's just part of what we've learned about evidence in the high-profile murder case.

Now indications have shown that any last second plea talks have stalled, and, barring any new bizarre twist, the case will finally go to trial in one week
.

There are six plus years of evidence, interviews, and paperwork -- all collected by the TBI investigating the murder of Holly Bobo -- has been sifted through by attorneys from both sides.

The question has remained: Does any of it convict Zach Adams?

While the evidence to convict may be unclear, the defense does worry about the jury.

In fact, they've asked for another change in venue believing that the current jury pool out of Hardin County already believes Adams is guilty.

There will be one final motions hearing on Friday. If there are no further delays, jury selection will begin Saturday with the trial beginning on Monday.

NewsChannel 5 will be providing gavel to gavel coverage live on NewsChannel 5 Plus and streaming here online.

Holly Bobo case: Experts to testify on remains, gun
Published 5:25 p.m. CT Sept. 5, 2017 | Updated 5:37 p.m. CT Sept. 5, 2017

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — Prosecutors in the Holly Bobo case have filed a notice that they have two experts scheduled to testify about skeletal remains and a revolver connected to the case.

The experts — Hugh Berryman of Middle Tennessee State University and Dana Medlin of EAG Laboratories in Omaha, Nebraska — are expected to testify in Zachary Adams' trial, which is scheduled to begin Saturday with jury selection and opening statements on Monday.

Berryman is the director at the Forensic Institute for Research and Education and an expert in forensic anthropology. Court documents say he is expected to testify about the remains that were identified as Bobo's. Those skeletal remains include a skull which was found in Decatur County in September 2014.

Medlin, a metallurgical engineer, is expected to testify on the analysis of an Arminius .32-caliber revolver. The revolver was found in May, and prosecutors have called the gun "a critical piece of evidence" in the trial.

Judge in Holly Bobo murder trial brings loaded gun to Memphis airport

Updated:Friday, September 8th 2017, 4:10 pm CDT

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The judge in the Holly Bobo murder trial was cited for bringing a gun to Memphis International Airport, according to court documents.

Hardin County Circuit Court Judge Charles Creed McGinley, 66, was issued two misdemeanor citations on Sunday, Aug. 27.

According to the report, TSA agents found a semi-automatic pistol in McGinley's bag as it went through an X-ray machine. The 9mm Smith and Wesson was found in the bottom of McGinley's bag; it was loaded with six bullets in the magazine and one in the chamber.

McGinley told officers he had forgotten the firearm was inside the bag before he went through TSA screening.

It is unclear at this point whether these citations will affect the trial in any way.

Jury selected in Holly Bobo case; will be sequestered
Published: September 9, 2017, 6:36 pm  |  Updated: September 9, 2017, 6:55 pm

SAVANNAH, Tenn. (WATN) – The jury was finalized early Saturday in the high-profile Holly Bobo murder case.

The jury will consist of eight women and seven men. The selection took 7 hours.

Selections were made based on a pool of 200 potential jurors who took a questionnaire. The jury was selected in Savannah, Tennessee.

The trial was moved to Hardin County so it would be easier to find an impartial jury.  Ninety witnesses are expected to be called to the stand.

If Adams is convicted, prosecutors will seek the death penalty. The trial is expected last three weeks and the jury will be sequestered during that time.

Holly Bobo murder trial: Prosecutors describe chilling details in death of Tennessee nursing student
By Cristina Corbin     Published September 11, 2017

A man who lived in a "dark, dark world" of methamphetamine and morphine abducted a Tennessee nursing student from her rural home, then drugged, raped and shot her before dumping her body and bragging about it to friends, prosecutors said Monday.

The charges were laid out in Savannah, Tenn., during opening statements in the trial of 33-year-old Zachary Adams, who is accused of killing Holly Bobo in April 2011.

Adams has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping, raping and murdering Bobo, who was 20 when she disappeared from her home in the rural town of Parsons on April 13, 2011. Her remains turned up in nearby woods in September 2014. If convicted, Adams faces the death penalty.

Adams' defense attorney, meanwhile, said her client is not guilty. She said in her opening statement that investigators found no hair, fingerprints or DNA belonging to Bobo in a search of Adams' home before he was charged in 2014.

In their opening argument, prosecutors described chilling details: Adams, they said, asked his friend, Jason Autry, to help him dispose of Bobo's body after he had raped her. Thinking she was already dead, Adams told Autry he was going to "gut" Bobo's body so she would not float to the surface once they dumped her into the Tennessee River, according to the prosecution

Bobo allegedly was wrapped in a blanket inside the vehicle -- but apparently she was still alive. She then made a noise, prompting Adams to shoot her in the head, prosecutors claimed.

"Jason sees a blanket in the bed of Zach's truck. There’s a body in the blanket," assistant Shelby County District Attorney Paul Hagerman said in opening statements.

Hagerman told jurors that evidence and testimony will show Adams told Autry that he, Shayne Austin, and John Dylan Adams -- the defendant's brother -- had kidnapped and raped Holly. Austin was found dead of an apparent suicide in 2015.

Sobbing, Holly Bobo's mom collapses during first day of murder trial

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — A man who lived in the "dark, dark world" of methamphetamine and morphine addiction abducted Tennessee nursing student Holly Bobo from her rural home in 2011, then drugged, raped and shot her before discarding her body and bragging about it, a prosecutor said Monday.

Zachary Adams, 33, has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping, raping and killing Bobo, who was 20 when she disappeared from her home in Parsons, Tennessee, on April 13, 2011. Her remains were found 3 ½ years later near her home in Decatur County, located about 100 miles southwest of Nashville.

A judge briefly cleared the courtroom during the first day of Adams' trial Monday, after Bobo's mother, Karen, collapsed to the floor sobbing. Karen Bobo and her husband, Dana, were among the first people called to testify Monday, reports CBS affiliate WREG.

Holly Bobo murder trial: Officials describe finding 'suspicious' mattress, scratches on alleged killer
By Cristina Corbin     Published September 12, 2017

A man accused of kidnapping, raping and killing a Tennessee nursing student had "visible scratches" and a suspicious mattress outside his home in the days following Holly Bobo's disappearance, law enforcement officials testified Tuesday.

Jurors were also shown photos of Bobo's blood found inside the carport of her family's rural Tennessee home on the second day of testimony in the trial of 33-year-old Zachary Adams, who is accused of killing Bobo in April 2011.

On Tuesday, Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper Warren Rainey recounted how he was first to question Adams about two weeks after Bobo disappeared. Adams had a criminal record that included drug possession and assault and he lived in an area near where a credit card receipt with Bobo's signature was found, Rainey said.

Rainey told jurors that Adams was "shaking" when he showed up unannounced at his home north of Parsons. The officer also said he discovered a mattress that appeared to be in good condition resting against the side of the house.

"When I saw the mattress it gave me the gut feeling of something is not right," Rainey told jurors inside the Hardin County Courthouse in Savannah, Tenn.

"I could tell he was visibly shaken. He was scared ... he was shaking," Rainey said of Adams.

An FBI agent also testified about fresh scratches found on Adams' arm after Bobo's disappearance. The agent described them as "linear scratches" on the inner arm -- prompting him to take photographs of the wounds, which were shown to jurors.

Earlier Tuesday, the court viewed photos of bloodstains found near Holly's Ford Mustang in the family’s garage on the day she disappeared. Special Agent Lawrence James, a forensic scientist with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said DNA analysis showed that the 50 to 60 blood drops found on the floor of the carport belonged to Holly and indicated "there was some sort of struggle."

Zach Adams' ex-girlfriend testifies in Holly Bobo murder trial
Posted: Sep 12, 2017 8:07 AM CDT
Updated: Sep 12, 2017 6:15 PM CDT

Adams’ former girlfriend Rebecca Earp testified about their rocky relationship. The couple had been living together but were in the process of breaking up.

Earp said the day after Bobo went missing, Adams made a comment while watching TV news with Shayne Austin.

“Zach and Shayne were watching the news. Zach made the comment, ‘They’ll never be able to find her,’” Earp said.

Earp also said Adams threatened to tie her up like Bobo several months after her disappearance.

“He said he would tie me up just like Holly Bobo and nobody would ever see me again,” Earp said.

On cross-examination, the defense established that both Earp and Adams were doing meth at the time and Earp had changed her story a number of times.

Earlier in the day, prosecutors began putting their expert witnesses on the stand.

The court heard from police about how they tried to track Bobo through her cellphone from the very first day she disappeared.

Bobo's phone reportedly pinged near Adams' home on Adams Road.

Man who found Holly Bobo's remains testifies in day 3 of trial
Posted: Sep 13, 2017 8:03 AM CDT
Updated: Sep 13, 2017 3:59 PM CDT

On Wednesday morning, a series of witnesses testified about items they found that related to Bobo’s disappearance.

Some were her personal items, but most importantly, the court heard testimony about how her remains were found. The jury heard testimony from the man who discovered Bobo's skull.

Larry Stone testified that in 2014 he was looking for ginseng, a root, when he saw something that caught his attention -- a bucket turned upside down in the woods. He turned it over and discovered it was a skull. He yelled to his cousin.

"I said, I found remains. Get up here now. I started bawling, please tell me it's not real. I said, ‘I think I know who his could be.’ I said, ‘I think it’s Holly,’" Stone said.

Stone's discovery that day was a crucial find. Bobo's remains were never found in the three years after her disappearance.

Laura Hodge with the TBI testified about bones and teeth found scattered in a ditch off County Corner Road in Holladay, near a cell phone tower
. She described it as a meticulous excavation.
