Holly Bobo trial: TBI reveals additional remains found in woods, along with wallet and ID
Published 7:30 p.m. CT Sept. 12, 2017 | Updated 2:45 p.m. CT Sept. 13, 2017

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — Holly Bobo’s driver’s license was still in her wallet three years after her disappearance, when her skull, jaw and teeth were found in the woods off County Corner Road.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Laura Hodge identified the wallet, which had tooth marks from animals, and said it had apparently been dragged by animals through the woods to a place away from Holly’s remains and what was left of the black flip flops her mother said she would have been wearing on the morning of April 13, 2011.

Hodge’s testimony is the first time the TBI has confirmed identifiers of Holly Bobo had been found in September 2014.

TBI agents went “one scoop at a time,” shoveling and sifting through dirt in early September 2014.

Through that process, forensic scientists found teeth and a set of silver hoop earrings.

Holly Bobo, who had been reported missing three years earlier, was identified by dental records after her skull was found by a ginseng hunter digging in the woods near County Corner Road.

Wednesday is the first time the TBI has indicated that additional remains were found in those woods near Benton County after Bobo’s skull was identified

Autry testifies he helped Adams dispose of Holly Bobo's body
Published:Thursday, September 14th 2017, 6:09 am CDT
Updated:Thursday, September 14th 2017, 12:09 pm CDT

DECATUR COUNTY, TN (WMC) - CLICK HERE to watch the trial as it unfolds.

Jason Autry was the first testimony Thursday in the murder trial of Holly Bobo

Autry was friends with Zach Adams, Dylan Adams, and Shayne Austin; he is also charged in the murder of Holly Bobo. Autry is one of a handful of people granted partial immunity for information in the case.

Autry said he bought a pill from Austin, broke it in half, and ingested the drug. He then walked back to where Zach was standing.

Autry said Zach told him he needed help hiding a body. Autry assumed the body belonged to someone named JoJo they had previously talked about killing.

Autry said Zach told him, "No, that's Holly Bobo."

Autry said he was clueless and did not know who Bobo was, and did not care about the body in the back of the truck. Autry said Holly was wrapped in a blanket in the back of the truck.

Autry said he agreed to help bury the body, as long as he could move his car first.

Autry said Dylan never came out of the trailer; Austin was putting things into the burn barrel. He did not know what the items were, but the smell was like, "a meth lab burning."

Autry said he then backed his car to Yellowsprings Church and got into the truck with Adams.

As they got down the road, Autry asked Adams how they would bury the body without any shovels or pick-axes.

Autry, thinking of a plan, suggested taking her intestines out and putting her into water where turtles could eat the body.

He said the two drove to an area he had been to before on Birdsong Road, near a boat dock. They backed up to a pile of rip rap, about 20-30 feet from an I-40 bridge.

Autry confirmed this location through a series of pictures shown to him by the prosecution.

He said the two got out and grabbed Bobo's body when he noticed a small amount of blood on the truck and on the blanket.

Autry said he never looked inside or unwrapped the blanket. He said the two placed the body on top of the rip rap.

Autry said he was standing over the body when he noticed her legs moving and heard a sound of distress.

He told Adams, "This [expletive] is still alive."

At that time, he said Adams reached into the floorboard of the truck and grabbed a pistol.

"I said, 'whoa,'" Autry said, because he wanted to check the area. He walked away to check and make sure the area was clear.

He said he told Adams the area was clear, and then he heard a gun go off.

"It sounded like to me, that it shot three or four times...it echoed under the bridge."

Autry said there was just one shot, but he heard it echo several times and saw birds fly away.

"I heard a boat," Autry said. "And I took off running."

Autry feared the two had been seen or heard. Autry said the two grabbed the body again and loaded it back into the truck before racing off.

Jason Autry testifies all day, explains how Zach Adams killed Holly Bobo
Published:Thursday, September 14th 2017, 6:09 am CDT
Updated:Thursday, September 14th 2017, 7:10 pm CDT

After a short recess, Zach Adams' defense team began cross-examining Autry.

The defense went over Autry's drug habits, having him detail how he used drugs and how much he used. Autry admitted the drugs, which he frequently and heavily used, distorted his mindset and his memory.

The defense then walked Autry through his story again, probing him for errors and testing his memory of the events.

For more than two hours, and through multiple short recess, the defense team made Autry map out his route on the day he said Adams killed Holly Bobo.

After another break, defense attorney Jennifer Thompson asked if it was Judge C. Creed McGinley's intention to continue the trial Thursday night until she was finished questioning Autry. Judge McGinley said that was his intention.

Thompson then said she had a lot more questions and pointed out that it was very hot the courtroom. She said continuing late into the night would cause the jury to harbor ill-will toward her and her client.

"[Then] ask legitimate cross-examined questions," the judge responded. He pointed out that Thompson spent hours getting Autry to write on maps to no apparent purpose.

Thompson resumed cross-examination of Autry. She said he helped Adams kill Holly Bobo. Autry said that was not true. He said he did not stop Adams, and in fact he went to make sure the coast was clear, but he did not kill her. He also said he has remorse for the role he played in her death and hiding evidence that could've helped solve the case earlier.

Thompson brought up allegations that Autry may be lying during his testimony to lessen his prison sentence. She said Autry could have his federal sentence reduced if his testimony helps the state convict Adams. The two then got into a dispute over Autry's federal immunity agreement. Autry said he knew he had an agreement, but he had never seen it. Thompson then showed Autry the immunity form, which had his signature on it.

Thompson then asked Autry if she was correct in summarizing his intentions today by saying he wanted the jury to understand that he's facing a death penalty, and he came in here telling the complete truth but he only hopes for leniency and has no other expectation for what's going to happen.

"I've come in here and admitted my wrongs, admitted where I've lied, testified to the truth, and I hope for leniency. That is correct," Autry responded.

The fifth day of the trial is slated to begin Friday morning at 9. Judge McGinley has already stated that he expects the trial to last into and possibly past Saturday. If the trial continues Saturday, testimony will happen in the morning.

Holly Bobo trial: TBI Agent says agency made terrible mistake
Published 8:30 p.m. CT Sept. 14, 2017 | Updated 2:28 p.m. CT Sept. 15, 2017

SAVANNAH, Tenn. — Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Brent Booth testified Friday that his agency realized officials had made a terrible mistake in the early days of the Holly Bobo investigation.

"We made mistakes that I will take with me for the rest of my life," Booth said and wiped tears from his eyes. "But we got the right person."

Booth said that in the deluge of tips and other information that was being turned in following Bobo’s disappearance, agents failed to read memos thoroughly, even when details of the investigation including tips and items found pointed to the current defendants.

“The left hand didn’t know what the right hand was doing,” Booth said. “We didn’t realize what was there. Their alibis weren’t checked out.”

Booth was referring to the alibis of Zach Adams, Jason Autry and Shayne Austin, whose home was nearby both cell phone pings from Bobo’s phone and items of hers found after she went missing.

More: Why has it taken so long for the Holly Bobo murder trial to begin?

Booth said early on agents prized tips that she was alive and being held captive, over other tips that pointed to the men.

Booth said he had been told that the alibis had been checked out, but a phone call in January 2014 "refocused the investigation."

"The focus on the investigation changed to Zach Adams, Jason Autry, Shayne Austin and Dylan Adams," Booth said.

Eight months later, Holly Bobo's remains were found three miles from Shayne Austin's home, and maybe five miles from Zach Adams' residence.

Prosecutor Paul Hagerman asked Booth if he knew on Sept. 7, 2014 that the skull was Holly Bobo.

"I knew. Scientifically, no. But it had to be," he said.

Booth also testified that several other items of Bobo’s were found around Austin’s home, where Autry testified Thursday she had been taken after she was kidnapped.

State prosecutors on Friday called witnesses to the stand to corroborate roughly seven hours of  Jason Autry's testimony the day before.

Witnesses in the morning included a satellite dish installation worker, a neighbor, Autry’s former girlfriend, a woman who Autry asked to enter her property and the man to whom Autry told prosecutors he and Shayne Austin traded the gun used in Holly's death.

TBI agent admits mistakes made during Holly Bobo investigation

For the first time in the case, the public also learned details about the alleged murder weapon.

Prosecutors only discovered the mysterious gun just a few months ago. It took investigators six years to find it.

Authorities found the gun with help from a man named Victor Dinsmore, who took the stand in the trial for Zach Adams on Friday morning. He said the weapon ended up in his hands just two days after Bobo vanished.

Dinsmore testified that he knew Zach Adams, Jason Autry and Shayne Austin back in 2011. He said he used to sell them morphine.

Two days after Bobo disappeared, Dinsmore said he gave Austin 12 morphine pills in exchange for a gun.

Dinsmore, who is not legally allowed to have a gun, testified that he gave his gun to his wife because he heard about what happened to Bobo.

He later called his wife and told her to get rid of it.

"Because I was worried it had a body on it, meaning I was worried it had been used to kill somebody," he said.

Dinsmore has a federal deal granting him immunity regarding any gun charges. He is a convicted rapist and a self-proclaimed former drug addict.

What remains unclear is why it took six years for investigators to find this gun.

Dinsmore told the jury he said to investigators that he knew the whereabouts of the gun used to kill Bobo long before her body had been found and before anyone knew she had been shot.

Only recently did the TBI fly Dinsmore back to Tennessee. They went to the location he described and eventually found the gun.

The defense questioned Dinsmore, trying to poke holes in his story.

Zach Adams' attorney has pointed out his past drug use and insinuated that the TBI coaxed Dinsmore into changing his story.

The defense also claims it was Dinsmore who got rid of the gun and not his wife.

During interviews with police, Dinsmore implicated another man for the disposal of Bobo's body.

Michael Alexander has an immunity deal as well and may be called to testify.

Testimony wrapped up around 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The trial will resume Saturday at 9 a.m

TBI agent testifies phones of Bobo, Adams, Autry in same general location day she was taken
Published:Saturday, September 16th 2017, 8:13 am CDT
Updated:Saturday, September 16th 2017, 11:43 am CDT

DECATUR COUNTY, TN (WMC) - Day six of the Holly Bobo murder trial was the shortest yet, lasting around two hours.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Michael Frezzell testified for just over an hour, taking up the majority of the time Saturday, about the location of Holly Bobo's phone, Zach Adams' phone, and Jason Autry's phone on the morning of Holly's disappearance. Frezzell used cell phone towers pings from incoming and outgoing calls and messages on the phones to pinpoint their locations.

Candace Wood, who went on a double date with Holly and her boyfriend just days before she was taken, testified about seeing a man, whom she later identified as Shayne Austin, staring at them while on the date.

The first witnessed called to testify was Debbie Dorris.

Dorris cleans for a living, and she testified that saw Jason Autry and Shayne Austin arguing while she was cleaning.

Michael Frizzell took the stand after Dorris.

Frizzell is an assistant special agent with TBI, and he prepared a report containing phone records, including records from Zach Adams, Jason Autry, and Holly Bobo.

Frizzell testified that during and shortly after the time Holly was taken, phone records indicate that her phone had incoming calls and messages but nothing outgoing. Phone records indicate that just after 8:15 a.m. on the day Holly was taken, her phone began moving further away from her home, according to Frizzell's testimony.

Zach Adams and Jason Autry exchanged phone calls and text messages the morning Holly was taken, phone records show.

Phone records also show Zach Adams' phone and Holly Bobo's phone were in the same general area on the morning of Holly's disappearance.

At 8:55 a.m. that same day, Holly Bobo's phone, Zach Adams' phone, and Jason Autry's phone all pinged off the same tower.

After the prosecution was finished with their questions, the court took a 15-minute recess before the defense began.

The defense decided not to cross-examine Frezzell

Testimony continues in week 2 of Holly Bobo murder trial
September 18, 2017

HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. — What could be the beginning of the last week of the trial of Zach Adams began Monday morning in Hardin County.

The trial got off to an early start, beginning at 8:30 Monday morning rather than the usual 9 a.m. start.

A dispatcher for the Decatur County 911 system testified about emergency calls. The jury heard playback of a 911 call between a dispatcher and Dick Adams, Zach Adams’ grandfather.

The judge called a recess shortly to allow defense attorneys a chance to prepare for the testimony of Terry Britt, who is serving time for kidnapping and attempted rape.

Britt was once a suspect in Bobo’s death. He was never charged in connection with the case.

The state then called Anthony Phoenix to the Stand. His connection to the suspect is that he used to do drugs with Zach Adams.

Phoenix talked about a car ride with Adams in which Adams said “I couldn’t have picked a prettier [expletive],” and that “It was fun.” Phoenix said Adams did not mention Bobo’s name in the conversation.

Next on the stand was Jamie Darnell, who described an incident in which he said Zach Adams fired a gun near Darnell’s girlfriend’s head.

Holly Bobo Trial: State rests its case after suspect's former jailmates take the stand
Monday, September 18th 2017

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Click here to watch live.

The state rested its case in the Holly Bobo trial after a day filled with testimony from suspect Zach Adams' former jailmates.

Adams is accused of kidnapping, raping and killing Bobo in Decatur County. Her remains were found three years after her disappearance. If convicted, Adams faces the death penalty.

The state called 44 witnesses to the stand during the first seven days of the trial.

Carl Stateler

Former Parsons resident Carl Stateler testified Monday that he once heard Zach Adams tell a bartender “I’ll kill you like I did Holly Bobo.”

Stateler knew Adams and others during the time of Bobo’s disappearance and murder. The summer after she disappeared, Stateler said he was riding around with Adams when Adams allegedly said, “I let Shayne hit it.”

On two other occasions that summer, Stateler testified to hearing Adams tell a bartender “I’ll kill you like I did Holly Bobo” and “I did it.” During cross examination, the defense said Stateler previously reported to authorities one of the quotes was “I’ll do you like I did Holly Bobo.”

Corey Rivers

Corey Rivers, Zach Adam’s former next door cellmate, testified that Adams told him about an alleged video regarding the murder case.

Rivers testified as he was getting ready to be let out or Williamson County Jail, Adams told him he had something he wanted to show Rivers. Adams allegedly said it was “right under the nose of people looking into it.”

When talking about why he was incarcerated, Rivers said Adams told him the story about Holly Bobo. Adams allegedly said he and his friends were drinking when they took a girl into the woods and was “there for the worst of it.”

Adams also saw Rivers frequently reading his bible, and Rivers said Adams had asked him if he thought God could forgive him.

During cross examination, the defense brought up the fact that Rivers is a registered sex offender. Rivers testified that it happened when he was 17 and the other person was 16.

Shawn Cooper

Shawn Cooper, who is currently jailed on a probation violation, testified that Zach Adams told him to give a message to his brother Dylan to keep quiet about the case.

Cooper said Adams questioned him if Cooper had contact with any federal inmates and to tell his brother to keep his mouth shut or I will put him in a hole beside her."

I have watched most of th trial online.

Do I have this correct?  She was abducted in the morning, in her carport, and by mid day that same day, was when Autry says they took her out to the bridge/ river? And according to Autry, that is when Zach shot her?

All in a matter of 4-5 hours?

Jason Autry testifies all day, explains how Zach Adams killed Holly Bobo
Published:Thursday, September 14th 2017, 6:09 am CDT
Updated:Friday, September 15th 2017, 8:42 am CDT

On April 12, 2013, Autry said he stayed the night at his girlfriend's house. He got up around 6:30 in the morning, drank coffee, and got in his girlfriend's car to be dropped off to his car, a PT Cruiser.

Autry said he got in his car and drove to a refuge to look at wildlife and 'kill time' before calling to buy drugs.

Autry said he was addicted to morphine, meth, and hydrocodone at the time. His search for drugs led him to make calls to Shayne Austin and Zach Adams. He eventually got in touch with Zach Adams around 8:40-8:50 a.m.

Adams initially said he was busy. Autry said Adams called him back a little later; he told him he needed his help at Austin's house, so Autry went there. Autry said he assumed Adams needed help with a batch of meth. 20-30 minutes later, he arrived.

Autry said he noticed a few things when he arrived: a fire burning in a burn barrel, Dylan in the doorway shirtless, and Zach in the yard with a firearm holstered on his side. He said Zach was walking around in the yard telling them to hurry and get out of the area.

Autry said he bought a pill from Austin, broke it in half, and ingested the drug. He then walked back to where Zach was standing.

Autry said Zach told him he needed help hiding a body. Autry assumed the body belonged to someone named JoJo they had previously talked about killing.

Watch: Holly Bobo murder trial - Day 8
by: Kristin Leigh, Katie Rufener, Leah Beth Bolton Updated: Sep 19, 2017 - 12:27 PM

Day 8: What's happened so far

Terry Dicus took the stand for the defense. He is a former TBI agent and used to be a lead investigator on the case. He was off the case by 2013, however.

Brent Booth with the TBI previously testified the TBI made a "huge mistake" and did not properly check the alibis of Zach Adams, Dylan Adams, Jason Autry, and Shayne Austin. Booth said he was told by Dicus that the alibis were checked. It was discovered in early 2014 that the alibis did not line up.

Dicus testified that he was trained to assume only one person was involved in a crime if the motive was sexual assault. The prosecution argued that he ignored Adams, Autry, and the others, because of that and focused his investigation instead onto convicted rapist, Terry Britt.

Britt provided an albi for the day Holly Bobo went missing, saying he was with his wife all morning, and even had a receipt for a store where they went and bought a bathtub.

Dicus insisted he does not believe Britt's alibi. He also called a Autry's testimony that Zach Adams  came to the Bobo house that morning to teach Clint Bobo (Holly's brother) how to cook meth, "ridiculous."

Court broke for a lunch recess around 12:05. Cross-examination of Terry Dicus will resume at 1:05.

Day 7: What happened

The state officially rested their case around 3 p.m.

The defense called their first witness, Rita Austin. Austin is Shayne Austin's mother. Shayne Austin committed suicide in 2015. He was a person of interest in the case. Austin testified about Shayne's drug addiction and his suicide.

She was shown a copy of a written statement Shayne gave to the District Attorney's office before his death. That statement was ruled hearsay at a previous pre-trial hearing and was not read aloud to jurors. Austin said she maintains her son's innocence.

The defense also called Shayne and Jason Autry's aunt, Judy Evans. She now owns the property where a barn used to sit. Previous testimony claimed Holly Bobo was raped in that barn.

Evans told the jury she searched the barn two days after Bobo was abducted and did not see anything different or strange. The barn has since been torn down, because Evans said it was in bad shape.

Court wrapped for the day around 4:30 p.m. It will resume Tuesday morning.

Phone records show Zach Adams apart from Holly Bobo at time of abduction

DECATUR COUNTY, TN (WMC) - CLICK HERE to watch the trial live as it unfolds.

The defense is expected to call a number of witnesses to the stand as Zach Adams' murder trial of Holly Bobo continues in its second week.

Former TBI criminal investigator Terry Dicus was the first on the stand Tuesday.

Dicus said Zach Adams' name, along with Dylan Adams, Jason Autry, and Shayne Austin, came up within the first week of the murder investigation.

The prosecution then questioned Dicus, who stopped working on the case in 2013. Dicus said he doesn't know what the state has done since he left.

The prosecution pointed out that Dicus assumed sexual predators work alone.

They also pointed out that Clint Bobo was never 100 percent certain which voice sounded most recognizable and close to that of the abductor.

Dicus pointed out that if Holly Bobo's and Zach Adams' phones were pinging at the same location, it would be reasonable if Zach was at his home.

Dicus said he was never aware of Adams' comments to other people about Holly, such as "I couldn't have picked a prettier [expletive]," because he left the case in 2013.

Dicus said there were at least 10 people taking credit for Holly's murder, including Zach Adams; investigators checked them all out, but believed they were not legitimate.

The court broke for lunch after Dicus' testimony finished.

Arthur G. Viveros, FBI special agent and lead investigator in the Holly Bobo murder trial, took the stand next. Viveros talked about what was found at Terry Britt's home, including a a blonde hair. During the cross exam, the prosecution asked Viveros if he knew the blonde that was found was not a DNA match to Holly Bobo, and he replied that he did know that.

After Viveros, the defense called David Barela, a private investigator and former criminal investigator with the US Army. The defense asked Barela to compare different bullet dimension. The prosecution said that Barela was not an expert in ballistics, and he agreed.

Travis Dunavant, an employee with the Decatur County Sheriff's Office, took the stand after Barela. He worked for the Decatur County jail in 2011. Dunavant was asked to check on Terry Britt's home. He testified that nobody answered the door and vehicles were missing at Britt's home. The prosecution chose not to cross exam Dunavant.

After Dunavant's testimony, John D. Adams, who goes by Dick and is Zach Adams' grandfather, took the stand next. Dick Adams testified that Zach Adams did not have a driver license, and he did not want him driving his white Nissan pickup truck. He also said that Dylan Adams did not have a habit of loaning Zach his truck.

The defense handed Dick a page out of his work log or diary, and it didn't mention seeing Zach Adams that day. The prosecution questioned Dick about Dylan Adams being in special education classes in school. Dick agreed that Dylan could "make it through the day" as in he could read, dress himself, and feed himself.

do we know what shayne's statement said? I don't recall they said what it said, other than that he made one? And if his other knew about it?
