SAVANNAH, Tenn. — It was a prayer circle 6 ½ years in the making.

Shortly after a man was convicted of kidnapping and killing Tennessee nursing student Holly Bobo, her family and friends held hands, closed their eyes and thanked God for the guilty verdict.

Family pastor Don Franks spoke softly as those who loved Bobo wept. He told them they will see Holly again.

"She's waiting on the other side," Franks said. The group then said "hallelujah."

Justice for Holly is not quite finished yet.

Holly Bobo case: convicted killer sentenced to life in prison plus 50 years
September 23, 2017

A man convicted of killing Holly Bobo avoided the death penalty Saturday after accepting a sentence that will keep him behind bars for the rest of his life-- plus 50 years.

Zachary Adams, 33, was found guilty Friday in the kidnapping, rape and murder of the 20-year-old Tennessee nursing student in 2011. Her skeletal remains were found three years later.

Judge C. Creed McGinley told a jury Saturday that Adams made a deal with prosecutors just minutes ahead of his sentencing hearing.

Under the agreement, Adams received a term of life without parole for Bobo's killing. He was sentenced to consecutive terms of 25 years on the kidnapping and rape counts.

Two other men, Jason Autry and Adams' brother, John Dylan Adams, also face charges of kidnapping, raping and killing Bobo.

Autry testified against Adams, telling jurors that Adams told him that he, his brother and their friend Shayne Austin had raped Bobo. Autry also said that he served as a lookout as Adams shot Bobo near a river on the day she was reported missing.

Autry was on a list of witnesses who were offered immunity in the case. He said he testified because he wanted leniency.

Autry's lawyer has told the judge that a trial does not need to be set for Autry, indicating he has reached a deal with prosecutors.
A trial date has not been set for John Dylan Adams.

Holly Bobo killer Zach Adams files motion for new trial
Published: November 9, 2017, 2:48 pm  |  Updated: November 9, 2017, 5:03 pm

HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – The man convicted of murdering Holly Bobo wants a new trial.

Zach Adams’ attorney Jennifer Thompson tells News 2 she has filed a motion for a new trial in Hardin County. The motion cites two arguments:

•The evidence was not sufficient for a verdict of guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
•The court erred in not granting Adams’ motion for a change of venue

In a surprise twist, the prosecution and defense agreed to a deal that gave Adams a  life sentence instead of the death penalty.

More: Life in prison without parole + 50 years for Zach Adams, convicted in murder of Holly Bobo

The request for a new trial would have to go before Judge C. Creed McGinley, who heard the case in September.  If he denies the motion, Adams can file an appeal with the State Court of Appeals.

In a related development, a hearing is scheduled for next week for co-defendants Dylan Adams and Jason Autry.

Tentative trial date for Dylan Adams in Holly Bobo case
Published 3:10 p.m. CT Nov. 14, 2017 | Updated 3:26 p.m. CT Nov. 14, 2017

SAVANNAH — Hardin County Judge C. Creed McGinley has set a tentative trial date of May 29 for John Dylan Adams, one of three men charged in the rape, kidnapping and killing of 20-year-old nursing student Holly Bobo.

McGinley said he is hopeful Adams' case can be tried within a week and expects it to move "a lot faster" than Zach Adams' trial.

McGinley said the jury pool will come from another county, and specifically mentioned Chattanooga for John Dylan Adams' case, because they are unlikely to find an unbiased jury from Hardin County following the Zach Adams trial earlier this year.

"I anticipate getting the jury in Chattanooga perhaps on the 24th (of May)," McGinley said.

McGinley said the jury will be sequestered by court order in John Dylan Adams' trial.

John Dylan Adams' returned to the Hardin County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon for a status hearing. The state also filed a motion to no longer seek the death penalty or life without parole against Adams

Jason Autry, who was originally scheduled for a status hearing Tuesday, and is also charged in the rape, kidnapping and killing of Holly Bobo, will not have his case heard until Adams’ is completed, McGinley said.

Adams' next status hearing is set for 10 a.m. Dec. 14.

Dylan Adams won’t face death penalty in Holly Bobo case; trial set for May
Posted 3:12 pm, November 14, 2017, by Bridget Chapman, Updated at 04:59PM, November 14, 2017

“I have moved this case as quickly as I could considering the huge amounts of discovery,” McGinley said. “Well over 100 agents worked on this and it’s just mountains of discovery.”

The next jury could come from from Chattanooga, where there has been relatively little coverage of the case, the judge said.

With the state taking the death penalty off the table, Adams faces a life sentence of 51 years if convicted.

The judge said he’ll be setting a cut-off date soon for when both sides could reach a plea agreement instead of going to trial.

SAVANNAH, Tenn. (AP) – A judge says progress has been made toward a plea agreement in the case of a man charged with kidnapping, raping and killing Tennessee nursing student Holly Bobo.

Judge C. Creed McGinley told a defense lawyer and prosecutors during a Thursday morning hearing that both sides must decide by 2 p.m. if they are going to reach a negotiated plea deal for John Dylan Adams. When court reconvened at that time, he said “substantial progress” had been made toward a deal and then set a hearing Monday to discuss a possible agreement.

BREAKING: Suspect in Holly Bobo murder enters best-interest plea
January 22, 2018  by WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff

UPDATE: Dylan Adams has entered a best-interest plea in the disappearance and death of Holly Bobo

Adams is pleading to facilitation of first-degree murder for 15 years and especially aggravated kidnapping at 35 years to run concurrently. Adams will serve 35 years total.

This type of plea does not admit guilt but has the same effect as a guilty plea. The guilty plea means that Adams cannot appeal the sentence.

Judge Creed McGinley said he knows no one is happy but that he is glad the Bobo family will not have to go through Adams’ trial.

As part of the agreement, Adams will serve 15 years for facilitation of first-degree murder, and 35 years for especially aggravated kidnapping; the sentences will run concurrent.

John Dylan Adams also released a statement through his attorney Matt Maddox saying that Clint Bobo, Holly’s brother, had no involvement in Holly’s death.

No court dates have been set for Jason Autry, the third person charged in the death of Holly Bobo. Hagerman said the state will handle Zach Adams’ motion for a new trial before moving forward with Autry.

The Fate Of The Final Defendant In The Holly Bobo Murder Case
By: Nick Beres

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - What's next for the state's star witness in the Holly Bobo murder case? Jason Autry is charged, but he helped send the two other defendants -- brothers Zach and Dylan Adams -- to prison.

Now, some believe Autry, who is still jailed awaiting trail, will get a sweetheart deal.

That may happen, but not anytime soon. It's been ten months since a jury convicted Zach Adams of kidnapping raping and murdering Holly Bobo

Zach Adams attorney Jennifer Thompson has filed a notice of appeal. And she plans to cite several issues, alleged mistakes, arguing for a new trial.

So Autry could remain locked up until the appeals court rules - a least a couple more years.

For now, Autry remain incarcerated without bond in the Riverbend Maximum Security Prison.

One Year After Trial And The Holly Bobo Case Is Still Open
By: Nick Beres

Updated: 6:44 PM, Oct 2, 2018

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A jury convicted Zach Adams of killing Holly Bobo. Not long after that his brother pleaded guilty. But one year later, the case remains open.

Jason Autry, the third defendant and the state's star witness still awaits his fate. He could be awaiting trial or, more likely, a plea deal that sets him free years earlier than many might expect.

It was chilling testimony that sealed Adams Conviction and a life sentence. But one year later, Autry is still sitting in Riverbend Maximum Security prison waiting. The case is stalled. Why?

"The state is concerned that if the case is reversed and in my opinion there is a strong likelihood of that they'll need him again," said Todd.

That's right, legal expert Jim Todd thinks Adams could get a new trial on appeal. And Adam's attorney Jennifer Thompson said she is still awaiting transcripts from the trial so she can formally file her appeals on the case.

Zach Adams to appeal conviction in Holly Bobo murder trial
Posted: 3:13 PM, Jun 03, 2019
Updated: 8:11 PM, Jun 03, 2019

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The man convicted of killing Holly Bobo could get a second day in court.

There are new developments on the status of Zach Adams  ’ appeal and the very real possibility he could get a new trial.

"No, that case is not over. Still planning on the appeal," said Thompson.

The appeal could be filed before the end of the summer.

The defense is simply waiting for the court to provide the full transcripts of all testimony that will be used to make their case. Once the appeal is filed, it will take several months for the Appellate Court to respond.

If a new trial is granted it likely would now come before sometime late next year.

Holly Bobo case: Zach Adams' attorney says appeal process could take years
Cassandra Stephenson, Jackson Sun Published 2:51 p.m. CT June 6, 2019 | Updated 9:02 a.m. CT June 7, 2019

After a news outlet reported new developments in the appeal of the man convicted in the kidnapping, rape and killing of Holly Bobo, the man's attorney is now saying the appeal process will likely stretch on for a few more years.

Thompson announced her request for a new trial in November 2017, claiming there was insufficient evidence to convict her client and the case should have been moved. Originally slated for Decatur County, the September 2017 trial was moved to Hardin County due to the case's high public profile.

Thompson wrote that the appeal is "moving slowly" but there are no particular holdups or sticking points — it just takes time.

The motion for the new trial has already been filed with the criminal court, but Thompson wrote she expects the appeal process to be more complicated.

"I would not expect the trial judge to grant us a new trial," she wrote.

Thompson anticipates she will have to file a notice of appeal with the trial court clerk's office following the initial hearing so the case will move on to the criminal court of appeals.

Holly Bobo case: Zach Adams' appeal may move forward

Updated: 8:06 AM, Aug 07, 2019

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — There’s new information in the high-profile Holly Bobo murder case. Zach Adams' appeal of the conviction may now move forward.

Everything had been on hold since Adams' conviction while all of the trial testimony was transcribed. In 2017, jurors convicted Adams of first-degree murder  for his role in Bobo's kidnapping and killing.

Now that the transcription process is complete, Adams' attorney, Jennifer Thompson, can now move to file an appeal. This also raises questions now about what happens with another defendant in the case — Jason Autry.
