So many people scrambling to cover their own asses!

I wonder how accurate & sincere this really is...

Graves family planned to raise lost nephews, Charlie, Braden

It was only a matter of time until Jennifer and Kirk Graves believed they would call Charlie and Braden Powell their own.

Shortly after the 2009 disappearance of the boys’ mother, Susan Cox Powell, the West Jordan couple took steps to become the adoptive parents of their nephews, with the blessing of the boys’ maternal grandparents, Chuck and Judy Cox.

The Graveses met with a family-law attorney to discuss procedures. They bought a 15-passenger van to accommodate a larger family. And they spoke to their own five children about new bedroom arrangements, preparing the kids for the arrival of their "brothers."

They visited the boys in Washington, most recently at Thanksgiving with the Coxes, where they bonded with the children. The encounters were encouraging to the Graveses, who in recent months believed their nephews — sullen and hurting while living with their father, Josh Powell — had finally started to blossom again after losing their mother and living in an unstable environment at their grandfather’s house, Kirk Graves said.

As the Graveses begin the long drive Thursday to Puyallup, Wash., to bury the 5- and 7-year-old nephews they expected to raise into adulthood, they won’t only mourn the children’s unthinkable murders plotted by Josh Powell, they will grieve the melded family they were ready to embrace but will never see.

"All our plans revolved around the eventuality of getting those boys," Jennifer Graves said during a Wednesday interview.

"We had talked with the Coxes. They would much rather be a grandparent than a parent," Kirk Graves added.

The couple praised the Coxes parenting efforts since taking custody of the boys from Josh Powell in September. The Coxes planned to take care of Charlie and Braden through what the family presumed would be Josh Powell’s eventual arrest and conviction for the murder of his missing wife, the Graveses said.

The families agreed that once the boys were in a good place emotionally, the Graveses were in a better position to raise them full-time.
 ::snipping2::

The Graveses continued to pour out grief over their lost nephews on Wednesday and compared Josh Powell’s behavior to that of his father, Steven Powell, who is in the Pierce County jail in Washington awaiting trial on voyeurism and child pornography charges.

Like his father, Josh Powell weathered a nasty divorce as a child, Kirk Graves said. Like his father, Josh Powell had problems with pornography and used his children as a tool to hurt other family members, he added.

"The mental history of both of them is not a history of mental illness, but of an inability to really function right within a relationship. They both didn’t do that well. Steve never killed his wife, but he did everything he could to make her life hell," Kirk Graves said.

" When it came down to the separation, Steve used the kids as a tool to hurt Terri [Josh’s mother] and everything else. Josh did the same thing, but it wasn’t with Susan, it was with anyone else. It is all about control. We keep saying that word, but it fits both of them very well. They just want control."

The Graveses said Wednesday they are confident Josh Powell killed his wife, perhaps because she planned to leave him and take the children away. They said he repeated his behavior when it appeared the Coxes would take full custody of Charlie and Braden.

The Graveses also offered a response to a statement issued by Powell’s aunt and uncle, Patti and Maurice Leach, which suggested Powell was a victim of bullying and an unfair portrayal in the media and on Internet sites, which led him to his breaking point.

"They blame it on a broken system. They blame the government, the government agencies, the police, the media. There is no one to blame here. The only one who is responsible for this is Josh," Jennifer Graves said. "I don’t care what kind of pressure you are under, you always have a choice. You don’t have to take someone else’s life."

She said she won’t attend her brother’s funeral, if a service is held. Although she spent a lifetime knowing Josh Powell, she said she can’t mourn his loss or focus on happier times from her brother’s life.

"The last two years have opened my eyes a lot to what he has become," Graves said. "After hearing the brutal manner that he killed his children, though, it’s really tough to feel any sorrow for him. It might come eventually.

"Right now, I am just disgusted that he would do this to his own children. To these two little boys that he professed to love."

Concerns about Josh Powell dated back to 1990s .

 ::snipping2::

The records, part of his parents' divorce proceeding, show that Josh's mother worried about her son's potential for violence.

Terrica Powell wrote at the time that she "felt extreme fear when Josh made a threat with a butcher knife in his hand."

She also recalled how Josh killed baby hamsters by throwing them against the side of their cages.

And she said Josh's father, Steven Powell, "has totally stripped away all respect in Josh ... for fidelity in marriage and loyalty to one's spouse."

Social worker recounts minutes before Powell fire
Associated Press | Posted: Friday, February 10, 2012 3:09 am

Josh Powell told his 7-year-old son he had a "surprise" for him moments before attacking and killing him and his 5-year-old brother, according to the state social worker who was supposed to supervise a visit between Powell and his sons.

In an interview to air Friday on ABC's "20/20," Elizabeth Griffin-Hall said that Powell slammed the door on her after the children were inside the house on Sunday. Hall said she banged on the door and heard Powell tell his son Charlie: "I've got a big surprise for you."

She also heard Braden, Charlie's younger brother, crying.
 ::snipping2::

 ::snipping2::
On Sunday, the social worker drove the boys from their maternal grandparents' home to their father's house outside Puyallup, about 35 miles from Seattle. Josh Powell lost custody of the boys last fall, after his father, with whom they lived, was arrested in a child pornography and voyeurism investigation.

Griffin-Hall said Charlie and Braden loved being with their father.

"One of them said what he wanted to do was go home and live with his daddy," she told ABC, adding that the boys would "light up" during visits with Josh Powell.

After Powell locked her out of the house, Griffin-Hall called 911 and her supervisor. Logs show deputies weren't dispatched until eight minutes after Griffin-Hall's initial contact with authorities, though police say any delay would not have stopped what ultimately happened to the boys.

The 911 dispatcher's handling of that call has been criticized, and an investigation has been launched into the emergency response.

The social worker said she told her boss "something terrible is happening here, and I was on the phone with ... when the house exploded.

"I wanted to get to the kids," she said. "I wanted to get to the kids. I would have broken in if I could."

But Griffin-Hall told ABC she doesn't think she could have saved them.

"How this happened is that Josh Powell was really, really evil. I couldn't have stopped him," she said. "I did everything I was supposed to do. I did everything right and the boys are still dead."

She said she loved the boys and was like a "grandma" to them.

"They are not going to grow up," Griffin-Hall said. "The world lost two beautiful boys to a monster."

Detective: Josh Powell computer depicted parent-child sex

SEATTLE -- A computer in Josh Powell's former home in Utah had animated images that depicted "incestuous" sex between parent and child, Pierce County authorities said, and a state official said the material prompted a judge to order Powell to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation just days before he killed his children and himself.

OMG, this case just gets more horrendously twisted!!

My question is, why didn't the court force the cops to look at his computer sooner when he lost custody of the children...? Especially since he was the prime suspect in Susan's murder/disappearance.
And who in the h*ll goes camping at midnight when it's what 20/30 out?

ITA!  Whatever happened to love and respect?  We'd have had our block knocked off if we acted like Josh. Josh learned at the feet of his sicko father, but his mother enabled him.

Surveillance Photo Shows Powell At Bank On Eve Of Deadly Fire

SEATTLE, Wash. - A surveillance camera photo that shows Josh Powell at his bank the day before he killed his two sons and himself was released Friday.

The image, which is the last known photo of Powell alive, was taken at a Pierce County Bank of America at 11:19 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. About 25 hours later Powell would fill his Graham house with gas and attack his two sons with an ax before blowing up the residence.

Either go to funeral to celebrate Powell boys' lives or stay home

If, on Saturday, you plan to celebrate the lives of Charlie and Braden Powell at their memorial service, please, come and be welcome.
If you plan to protest a few hate group members who have said they’re coming in from Kansas, please, reconsider.
Chuck and Judy Cox, the boys’ grandparents, ask this of you. The Rev. Dean Curry, pastor of Life Center church, asks this of you. He has volunteered the sanctuary at 1717 S. Union Ave., for the 11 a.m. service.

Susan's best friend reacts to boys' deaths .

SALT LAKE CITY -- Many people in Salt Lake City came to know and love Charlie and Braden Powell when they lived there as toddlers.  Their murders have deepen the sense of loss that Salt Lake City has endured for over two years since the boys' mother disappeared.

Looking back, Kiirsi Hellewell wonders how she and Susan Powell became so close, they were so different.

 ::snipping2::

And it was pretty when Susan and her husband Josh and their son moved into the neighborhood.  The families became fast friends, but when Susan got pregnant agan, Josh changed.

“He had a really weird thing thing about germs…wouldn’t touch her...go near her,” said Hellewell.  "She kept a lot of it from her parents."

They appeared happy, but Hellewell says over the next four years Josh grew cold, angry and emotionally abusive.  Susan’s pretty world was growing dark.

 ::snipping2::

“Everytime, I see their faces, I see Susan in them, sweet and innocent...they did not deserve that,” said Hellewell.

Hellewell plans to attend the boys' funeral on Saturday and after that she plans on rededicating herself to finding her missing friend.  She says she has no doubt Josh killed his wife and knows this won't be over until Susan is buried with her sons.

Lawmaker: 'Red flags' were there throughout Josh Powell's life

 ::snipping2::

Court documents reveal Powell had a troubled adolescence filled with tension and violence. Longtime friends cite examples of behavior called both callous and selfish. Interviews and evidence gathered following the disappearance of his wife pointed to bizarre actions. And most recently, an "alert" sent to the Washington courts from authorities in Utah citing pornographic material found in his home have lawmakers and others asking why Powell was allowed near his children.

 ::snipping2::

The Troubling questions and search for understanding has put the focus on Josh Powell and his father, Steven. Trouble appeared long before Josh ever met Susan Cox.

It was in Nov. 1992, when Powell was 16, that his mother expressed concerns about her sons and what she felt they were learning from her Steven Powell, her husband.

"To see them becoming so hardened toward others and scornful of law and order is very frightening to me," Terrica Powell wrote in a court declaration. "I feel that they are being victimized by Steve's distorted teachings. I am hoping that they will be able to receive the kind of help they need in time to prevent them from destroying their lives, or others' lives around them."

The disturbing details of Josh Powell's adolescence can be found in close to 200 pages of court documents filed as part of a divorce proceeding. They include threats he allegedly made to his mother with a butcher knife,  and his killing of a pet hamster. Terrica Powell wrote numerous times about Josh Powell, who apparently followed his father's lead in harassing and abusing their mother, according to the documents.

"With the kind of disrespect the kids have learned to have regarding laws, I worry about what they will do," Terrica Powell wrote. "It seems like there is a sickness pervading my family and I have been powerless to stop it."

 ::snipping2::

Terrica Powell said many of her son's issues at the time might have stemmed from a turbulent relationship with his father. Steven Powell would "pointedly attack" Josh Powell, she stated in the documents.

"I think that much of Josh's difficulties through the years has stemmed from not knowing where the boundaries are — what are the limits of acceptable behavior," she said .

 ::snipping2::

Rachel Marini, who knew Josh Powell before he married Susan Cox, said she and her husband, Tim, became good friends with the couple in Washington. But she eventually started to take issue with the way Josh Powell treated his wife.

"Every restaurant we ate at, Susan could have one thing from the dollar menu, but he could have whatever he wanted," Marini said, recalling a road trip the group took. "He just had to be in control of every situation and the one who called all of the shots."

Marini said she was also concerned about the callousness with which he treated his children. He wouldn't extend his hand to keep a young Charlie from falling down the stairs, instead calling Susan Cox Powell in from another room to help the child. At one point, the boy appeared malnourished because Josh Powell said he wasn't "wasting his table food" on the child.

 ::snipping2::

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705399102/Lawmaker-Red-flags-were-there-throughout-Josh-Powells-life.html?pg=1

I don't mean to be critical of Ms. Marini and after the fact it's easy to say what one would have done in the situation, but I truly believe if I were friends with someone who had a child who appeared malnourished and the father said he didn't want to waste food on the child, I'd call the police.  And if that didn't work I'd have my attorney see if there would be any legal step I could take to force government agencies to do their duty. There's a lot I don't understand about many people involved in this tragedy but Susan was a grown up, a mother, a stockbroker, and she allowed Josh to dictate the $1.00 meal?  I know for sure that if my husband did that (And of course he wouldn't.  He was the kindest man I ever knew.) I would have said, "Honey you have the dollar meal if you want someone to have it, I'm having the steak."  It is my belief that in many cases you can be a victim only if you agree to be a victim.  This doesn't apply to children, of course.  But children are victims only if an adult allows it.  Last night on Nancy Grace someone said that Josh forced Susan to grow their own food and she wasn't allowed to buy anything.  "Forced?"  How do you force someone to do anything, short of putting a gun to their head?  And if he did put a gun to her head, there are remedies for that in the law.

Susan is dead through no fault of her own, but I wish women like her would wake up and understand that they are not chattels of their husbands but they are equal in every way and entitled to make their own decisions and refused to be "Allowed" to do anything. They are free to do it or not as they wish.

Josh Powell was evil through and through and everyone knew it.  He is the guilty party here and no one else.  Everyone knew it.  Everyone.  Why was nothing done to help Susan and her children?

I'm just really sick and tired of children being hurt and killed at the hands of some monster and a lot of people knew what could happen and no one doing anything about it.  Too late now.

SEATTLE – The anti-gay church group that threatened to protest at the funeral of Charlie and Braden Powell Saturday may not be coming after all. The possible turn of events comes after more than 1,800 people vowed on Facebook to block the protest, along with Occupy Seattle.

Whether the Westboro Baptist Church shows up or not, the boys’ grandparents have a message for everyone: Come to honor Charlie and Braden or don’t come at all.

'Josh Powell was really, really evil,' social worker says

With law enforcement officials and the court system facing allegations that they failed to recognize the danger that Powell posed to his children, Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, the case continues to unfold on several fronts:

--Disturbing new details have emerged about "incestuous" sexual drawings discovered on Powell's computer, dating back to when he still lived in Utah, before moving to Washington state, according to the Associated Press.

The images led a court-appointed psychologist to call for Powell to submit to a psycho-sexual evaluation and a polygraph test, tests that a judge approved last week when denying Powell's request to regain full custody of his children. Powell was said to be devastated by the judge's ruling, and it may have been the trigger for his deadly actions.

The discovery of the disturbing images, however, was not made known to all the parties in the case, including the attorney for the children's maternal grandparents, who could have used the images as grounds to bar Powell from having any access to the boys.

--The investigation into Susan Powell's disappearance is taking on new urgency and led authorities this week to rope off a portion of a recycling center in Graham, Wash. They were following up on a tip that Josh Powell had discarded some paper there shortly before he set his home on fire, the News Tribune of Tacoma reported.

Authorities in Utah have also reported a new flood of tips coming in about Susan Powell's disappearance.

--Washington state Sen. Pam Roach told the Salt Lake City Tribune it was "outrageous" for a judge to give Powell visitation with his sons, and wants to know precisely what the Washington agency in charge of child welfare knew and when officials knew it. She has sent a public records request to Washington's Department of Social and Health Services.

"This material should be made public," she told the newspaper. Her district includes the Graham, Wash., home where Powell killed the children.

--The case worker who was escorting the children for a court-mandated supervised visit with their father said that Powell coaxed the children into the house on Sunday by saying "I've got a big surprise for you!" and then slammed the door on her to keep her from entering.

The worker, Elizabeth Griffin-Hall, told ABC News about those final, frightening moments -- and her realization that Powell was setting the house on fire with all inside. "How this happened is that Josh Powell was really, really evil. I couldn't have stopped him," she said.

--In a bid to understand what may have been driving Josh Powell long before Sunday's inferno, the Salt Lake City Tribune unearthed Washington state records relating to the bitter divorce of Powell's parents. The documents portray a dysfunctional family ruled by father Stephen Powell, who allegedly abused his wife and children -- emotionally, physically and verbally -- and whose penchant for porn contributed to his divorce. The documents also portray Josh Powell as an emotionally disturbed teen who killed family pets, threatened his mother with a butcher knife and attempted suicide.

--Finally, Chuck and Judy Cox, the parents of Susan Powell and the grandparents of the boys killed in the fire, are pleading with protesters and counter-protesters to stay away from Saturday's scheduled funeral for the boys.

Jmo, I wouldn't be surprised if the $7000.00 went up in flames at the house.
Might not of wanted anyone to have anything of his.
