Josh Powell Told Sons He Had 'Surprise' For Them, Social Worker
February 9, 2012

Josh Powell told his sons he had a "big surprise" for them as they ran toward his home Sunday, just moments before he attacked them with a hatchet and then blew them up, social worker Elizabeth Griffin Hall told ABC News today.

"He caught my eye, his shoulders were slumped. He had a sheepish look," Hall told "20/20" in an exclusive interview. "He just shrugged his shoulders and slammed the door."

Hall said she had been taking the boys, Charles, 7, and Braden, 5, on supervised visits to Powell's house for three months.

Powell, who was the sole suspect in his wife Susan Cox's disappearance in 2009, had lost custody of the children in September and lost an appeal to get his children back just four days before he decided to kill them.
 ::snipping2::
On Sunday, the children bounded out of her car and took off running for their father's house with Hall a few steps behind. Powell let them in, gave Hall his odd look, and locked the door.

As Hall banged on the door, "I heard him say, 'Charlie, I've got a big surprise for you'... And then I heard Braden cry out."

Powell often had surprises for the boys, Hall said, and the younger boy had a sore foot that Hall thought he had banged into something, but police later determined that Powell had used a hatchet to chop at his sons' heads and necks.

"I'm saying, 'Let me in, Josh, let me in,'" Hall said. "I realized I didn't have my phone in my hand and I could smell gas. Too much time had passed and I could smell gas."
 ::snipping2::

There is a part of the above that makes no sense to me.........
"and the younger boy had a sore foot that Hall thought he had banged into something, but police later determined that Powell had used a hatchet to chop at his sons' heads and necks."  What does the sore foot on Braden's foot have to do w/ the hatchet being used...?

Nut, I think what the social worker was trying to say was, Braden had a sore foot before he went for the visit to Josh.  After the boys ran into the house, the social worker heard Braden cry out and  she thought perhaps he had hurt his already sore foot by banging it on something, but what really caused Braden to cry out was Josh hitting him with the axe.  Does that make sense?

When she heard crying behind the locked door she thought the younger boy, with the injured foot, had banged his foot on something. Now she realizes the crying she heard was likely due to the hatchet injuries josh was inflicting on the boys with the hatchet...at least, that's what I got out of it.

I was just watching Shep on Fox News. He said that when the operator FINALLY dispatched the call for response, he categorized the call as "routine" rather than urgent or life threatening.

Routine!!!

Social worker's 911 call from Josh Powell's home
By The Associated Press – 1 day ago

Police have released a series of recordings from 911 calls made Sunday when authorities in Washington state say Josh Powell locked himself and his two young sons in his house and lit it on fire. The following transcript comes from a social worker who had just arrived at the home with the boys for a court-ordered supervise visit. The transcript has been edited to remove personal information.

DISPATCHER: Good morning.

<snipped>

SOCIAL WORKER: OK. It's 8119 189th St. Court East, Puyallup, 98375. And I'd like to pull out of the driveway because I smell gasoline and he won't let me in.

911 OPERATOR: You want to pull out of the driveway because you smell gasoline but he won't let you --

<snipped>

911 OPERATOR: I don't know ma'am. They have to respond to emergencies, life-threatening situations first. The first available deputy will respond.

SOCIAL WORKER: This could be life-threatening. He went to court on Wednesday, and he didn't bring his kids back and this is really — I'm afraid for their lives.

Social worker's 911 call from Josh Powell's home

<snipped>

911 OPERATOR: What's the address?

SOCIAL WORKER: 8119 and I think it's 89th -- I don't know what the address is.

911 OPERATOR: OK, that's pretty important for me to know.

SOCIAL WORKER: I'm sorry, just a minute. Let me get in my car and see if I can find it. Nothing like this has ever happened before in these visitations, so, I'm really shocked and I can hear one of the kids crying but he still wouldn't let me in. OK, it is one, uh, one ... Oh, just a minute I have it here. You can't find me by GPS?

Samarie, you and I  seem to agree on what we think the social worker was saying in the article on hearing little Braden cry out after he ran in the house.  How horrible!!  I had to read it a couple of times to understand what she meant.

I think any speed to my posting can be attributed to high speed internet.

Anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church to protest at slain Powell boys' funeral
February 9, 2012

EATTLE – Westboro Baptist Church, an anti-gay church best known for protesting military funerals, says its members will be at Saturday’s memorial service for Charlie and Braden Powell, the two children who died when their father allegedly set fire to his house.

The small Topeka, Kan.-based church, known for its extreme opposition to homosexuality, claims the boys' deaths are payback from God over the Washington state Legislature's support of gay marriage.

Hundreds of people have already vowed online to show up to keep the Westboro Baptist Church from disrupting the funeral, which will be at Life Center Church in Tacoma at 11 a.m.

According to a Dateline episode that I watched ... the membership of the Westboro Baptist Church is VERY small ... mostly one family.  Considering the online response ... I do not believe there will be any disruption of the service ... the service that will be held to honor the lives of Braden and Charlie.

One child may have cried out seeing his brother being chopped with a hatchet.

Totally premeditated also as evidenced by giving away the childrens' belongings.

Hell . . . special place. . .for Josh and those who supported and defended him and refused to do anything about him and his porno father.

Before boys’ murders, local authorities not told that Utah police believed Susan Powell was killed

OLYMPIA, Wash. —
Though Utah authorities believed six months ago that missing mother Susan Cox Powell had been murdered, authorities in Washington state were not notified.
 ::snipping2::
Though a Utah court issued a gag order related to information that Utah police sent to the custody hearing last Wednesday, the Assistant Attorney General, who was handling the custody case, said that information was about disturbing images and not the information that said Susan Powell was believed to have been killed.

“I think the social worker would have liked to have known that, if Utah had chosen to share that information,” McKenna said. “There’s going to be a lot of second-guessing there, and I’m sure in Utah, officials are wondering whether they should have done things differently.”

Washington police search landfill based on tip in Powell case

Puyallup, Wash. • Police here are searching a landfill after receiving a tip that Josh Powell may have taken papers there shortly before he murdered his children and committed suicide in the fire he set at his home.

Investigators from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office search a cordoned off area of a waste disposal site and recycling center near Powell’s Graham area home on Thurday, but the effort has so far failed to yield anything relevant to the case, said office spokesman Ed Troyer.

Search efforts will resume Sunday, Troyer said. Investigators had received a tip that Powell may have taken office paper to the recycling center on Saturday, according to Don Taylor, assistant district manager for LRI Hidden Valley, which owns the landfill.

Taylor said there are no security cameras on site, and Saturday was one of the site’s busiest days on record as people disposed of debris from a recent storm.

As investigators continue their search for clues that could complete a timeline of Powell’s activities leading up to the Sunday blaze or solve the case of his wife’s 2009 disappearance, one lawmaker was calling for a review of the custody case involving the Powell children.

Josh Powell’s boss says he was a good programmer

Kent, Wash. • When Ed Wadagnolo posted a job opening for his small software company last year, he received an application from an experienced programmer named Josh Powell.

“He told me his name,” Wadagnolo recalled Wednesday, “and he told us to look him up. ‘I am that Josh Powell.’ ”

Powell became the “No. 1 candidate,” Wadagnolo said, because of his technical abilities. When deciding on whether to offer him a position, Powell’s forthrightness about how he was under suspicion for the disappearance of his wife, Susan Cox Powell, worked in his favor.

“There’s a couple things you look for when you hire somebody,” Wadagnolo said. “Is he honest? On [the disappearance] he wasn’t just honest. He shared.”

“We made a decision,” Wadagnolo added, “that we believe in our justice system and he has not been charged with anything.”

What kind of SOB tells his child he has a surprise for him and then does what he did?  Pure evil.
