Crews return to pond in search for Mint Hill teen
Posted: Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012

 ::snipping2::
At 9:30 p.m., Mint Hill police said they planned to actively search the partly drained pond through the night. A raft was needed to scour part of the pond, and authorities worked through the cold, rainy weather, using searchlights set up on towers to illuminate the pond, which is in a dark and relatively secluded area.

Multiple agencies have helped in the search, including Mint Hill police, the Charlotte Fire Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On Wednesday, a K-9 unit from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office joined them in the search.

Neighbors and friends formed private search parties to look through the woods and neighborhood near the pond Wednesday. Local media also converged on the scene.

Police: body of 16-year-old Kayla Campbell found in pond

Posted: Dec 10, 2012 9:13 AM PST Updated: Dec 13, 2012 6:14 AM PST

MINT HILL, NC (WBTV) -

The body of 16-year-old Kayla Campbell has been found in a Mint Hill pond, investigators tell WBTV.

Authorities are trying to figure out how she died. Her body was found in the pond early Thursday morning off of Sable Cap Road after investigators drained the pond.

10 extra counselors are on hand at Independence High School Thursday to help students grieve. Campbell was a student at the school.

A rock has been painted in her honor and flowers are being placed at its base.

On Friday, everyone at the school will wear yellow ribbons to honor her memory.

On Wednesday afternoon, Sky3 flew over the pond and investigators had installed four water pumps to drain the pond.

Investigators say they received an offer from a local contractor to drain the pond, "so we took them up on the offer."  Police Chief Tim Ledford says they haven't received a specific tip about the pond. Chief Ledford says "we were just covering the bases".

This comes three days after 16-year-old Kayla Campbell went missing on Sunday afternoon.

"We need anyone to come forward who may have seen Kayla on Sunday between 3:00 pm-5:00 pm, specifically in the areas of Highway 51, Fairview Road, Lawyers Road and Bartlett Road where Kayla often rides her bike," investigators told WBTV on Wednesday.

Good Afternoon Monkeys.

Just heard the news on the Mid day news on www.wsoctv.com    So very sad. They said on the news that all evidence brought them back to the pond. When police were asked if the community should be worried , they said no. RIP Kayla.

In the video, it was reported that the pond was a very popular spot for teenagers.

“We’ll wait for the results from the medical examiner’s office, as to the cause of death,” Rowell said. “Then we’ll proceed from there.”

But he said there is nothing “at this point” to indicate foul play was involved.

Police said they still want talk anyone might have seen the teen between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday to call authorities at 704-545-1085

Classmates create candlelight tribute for Kayla Campbell

MINT HILL, N.C. —
A faint flicker of candles lined the dock, over the water, where 16-year-old Kayla Campbell's body was found early Thursday morning. Classmates left a hauntingly beautiful tribute to a friend they said is gone too soon.

"What happened here wasn't something that was a good thing and we want to make it something good, something to remember her by," said Jimmy Tabolski, a classmate.

Police: body of missing Mint Hill teen found in pond
Investigators still trying to determine circumstances around 16-year-old’s death
Posted: Friday, Dec. 14, 2012

MINT HILL As questions persist about how a missing teenager died, friends and family of Kayla Campbell filled in some of the details about the 16-year-old’s life.

Mint Hill police found Campbell’s body in a pond early Thursday, not far from where some of the girl’s belongings were found this week. Now, authorities are working to learn the circumstances around her death.

Although police and family members have said little publicly about what they’ve discovered, Mint Hill police Lt. John Rowell said there was nothing that indicated foul play was involved.

“We’ll wait for the results from the medical examiner’s office as to the cause of death,” Rowell said. Campbell was first reported missing on Sunday.

Earlier this week, her parents told WCNC-TV that the teen suffered from depression. But in a Thursday conversation with the *******, older brother Josh Campbell tempered that description.

“We all get sad sometimes. Everybody does, and Kayla was no different,” Josh Campbell said. “As to any deeper meaning in that, I can’t really say. I don’t really know.”

Classmates and family members remember Campbell as a bright, artistic person who loved photography, writing poems and making people laugh. Adopted from Russia when she was 2 years old, Campbell was the youngest of four children and doted on by her parents, family members said.
