I never go to the movies but I took my mother in law and my daughter to see "The Help" this weekend.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I grew up in the South, during that time, (I am caucasian) and my mom worked most of her life, so we had a Maid.  I was a sociology major in college, so I know/knew alot about the civil rights movement in the south during the 50's and 60's.   I could relate to parts of the movie and enjoyed the humor as well.  But personally, our household nor my mother ever treated our Maid with anything but the utmost respect and kindness.  So parts of it were not how I perceived having "Help" back then.  My mother in law, also grew up in the South and had a Maid as a young girl, and she agreed with me - her family was kind and respectful to their "Help".

Nevertheless, it will make you laugh out loud and it will make you weep.  I enjoyed the movie but better yet being my with MIL and daughter!

**OMG - I am not trying to start a political or racial thread here - please don't take me for that - I was just recommending the movie if anyone is interested in this type of film.
I have heard of the movie, glad you enjoyed it with your daughter and MIL.

I remember my Aunt having a lady named Julie that was her HELP, she was the nicest lady. She was always there for holidays and I being VERY young, never saw any difference in Julie than I did anyone else. I remember after dinner and stuff, they would pack up leftovers and give them to her and my grandad would take her home. So Caddy, having not seen the movie I can't make judgement, but from my own experience and being very young at the time, Julie was treated as a member of the family, not as Help.

So your experience is the same as mine, plus my family always taught us to treat everyone with respect no matter WHO they were, because whomever they are no matter race, religion, etc they are human beings. I hope that was a part of what the movie portrayed, if not I don't care to see it.

I'm whooped, went to Mass at noon, forgot there was Fall Festival (lots of different vendors, food from a variety of cultures that are in our parish, religious items for sale, etc) oh and then the raffle of a brand new Mustang convertible.

Downside is there was NO parking spaces for me to park, I had to PARALLEL park in a fire lane.    I flunked parallel parking on my first two driving tests  Don't know how I did it, but I got the hooptie between an SUV and a van without hitting either. To tell the truth, I was sticking out a bit, but oh well that made it easier to get out of the space. Wish I could have stayed and had some food and stuff, but had to go to work and type reports left from Friday. I am so looking forward for the end of work on Tuesday.

Hope you are all having a great day today, I had a bit of a meltdown on my way home from work, but the vet I talked to yesterday says it is to be expected. So now that the meltdown is over here is my therapy              Boy that feels good!!! Wish I could do it in person, I'm sure someone would bail me out of jail.  Monkey Devil!

Yard sale is over...whoooo peeee!!! We made a goodly amount, I split it with the girls for all their hard work. I AM WHOOPED! Just waiting for my fave flannel nightgown to get dry, and I'm thinking of bed.

Oh, forgot to tell ya'll my latest fashion disaster. I have these brown spots on my face, one abou the size of a dime. Well, since I have this fabulous county health inusrance, thought I'd get rid of them. Even concealer wouldn't cover them up. so, I go to the dermotologist yesterday (tired spelling) and she "froze" 3 spots. Youch, did that hurt. But, I thought it would be worth it.

well, today, the spots are black! I guess that's normal..but really, they didn't tell me I'd look worse before I looked better. I know at work they'll tease me and call me Spot! So, I did a little vanity medical...so nice to go to the doctor cos I want to, not cos I have to!

JSM, is this the brother who got married out of the blue? Maybe you can get your mom to give you her iPhone tonite..guilt her into it! And tell your brother we were disappointed that you were not at the wedding.

Brandi, I loved CC's consolation prize! sure, he's prolly not too happy about it, but maybe he can sell it and buy more beer!!

CC, I'm sorry you didn't win. I know! I'll start another contest!

Who ever guesses how much money we made at the sale gets "a major award"!

I am sorry it hurts, but since you are already a beauty, I don't know how the men are going to resist.  I hope hubby is up for the competition.

I always wanted to be a Major.

Thanks, Bearly. Right now, I look like a Halloween monster! the spots got bigger and blacker...all I need now is a wart on my nose, and I'm all witched up!

CC didn't seem too thrilled with his major award. I guess he's only in it for Brandi's money!! (he-he, that was a lotta money!)  Monkey Devil!

A gaming lap top is what my brat, the nose picker and eater, wants for X-mas.  Can I ask how much it was please?  I told him he is crazy but he does not want anything else.  I have 3 to buy for, but his Bday is 2 weeks before X-mas, so maybe a combined Bday/Xmas gift?

We got him an ASUS G60VX-RBBX05. Don't think you can buy one new anymore. This is refurbished, and much lower in price than a new one. "Gaming" laptops can get very expensive.

Got it from http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5753605&CatId=4965

We read good reviews on it. Like at: ZDnet: http://www.zdnet.com/reviews/product/laptops/asus-g60vx-rbbx05/33776097 and on the TigerDirect website, among others.

He has been running it for the past 10 hours and it is running hot. It shut down on its own. He has altered the way he is using it to allow more air to circulate under it, hoping that will help.

None of us use a laptop here, except for him; his older computer is an older model Panasonic Toughbook.

I'll let you know how this one works out for him as the days go by.

My kids were running hot and shutting down all the time, until I bought them coolers.  They cost about 30Bux, they plug into the puter by USB plug, and they have a fan in them.  They really work.  My little guy's never shut down and he sits indian style in bed with this thing on his lap and he has a laptop bruise.  It never gets better.  He does not care cause it does not hurt or itch.  It looks horrible.  They call it "toasted skin syndrome."  I have researched it and everything I have read says it is not perminent and not harmful.

The pic above is exactly what my son's legs look like, but he does not want to use a cooler.

Yeah, we went to Sam's Club today and bought him a Targus Lap Chill Mat. It has two fans in it and was recommended to me by some people on IRC.

The world of laptops is new to me, as I really prefer to work on my desktop.

No over-heating issues either that way. LOL

About the toasted skin thing .. I used a small ceramic heater under my desk one winter to keep my feet warm many years ago, and I got the same thing on my lower shins! Never knew it had a name.

It did go away eventually, but took a long time.

Hi Babybear.

We had a Rascal too.  So named by our daughter who got her from the pound when she was in university far away from home.  The pound had no history on her. Rascal was anxious, had separation anxiety etc. and our daughter was anything but the alfa and Rascal began to turn on her and others.  Our daughter was heartbroken so we took her in.  She left us in February - but in the seven years or so that she was here, she calmed down quite a bit, had a structured, predictable life and a garden which she patrolled and lots of squirrels to chase.
Frightened seems a good word to describe Rascal, even though she was not timid.

Hi Can--Rascal came to live with us before my husband died and they bonded immediately.  My husband always called every dog Rascal, like, "Come here you little rascal," so he decided to name him that.  He was an outside dog at the beginning, but little by little my husband let him come in for special occasions--then it got to the point that Rascal came in every night to watch Rush Limbaugh sitting in the recliner with my husband.  He always barked at Rush Limbaugh.  I never knew if that was approval or disapproval.  I never found out if Rascal was a Democrat or a Republican.  Shortly afterward, Rascal inched his way into the house permanently.  He was especially afraid of loud noises and fireworks.  I think he had been hurt that way.  On the 4th of July he would hear fireworks and tremble and cry and hide under the bed.  Once I actually got under the bed with him to comfort him.

Rascal was afraid of everything, especially men.  I assume it was a man who had hurt him.  But one day when there was a painter here and he was walking toward me with a can of paint in one hand, Rascal ran up and bit him behind the knee.  That sweet dog, who was afraid of his shadow, tried to protect me.  The painter understood.

After my husband died, Rascal would sit looking down the road waiting for him to come home.  It was very touching.  I never knew how old Rascal was, but he lived several years after that and sat in the reclining chair all by himself.

Hi Babybear.  You have such a wonderful way with words and I love to read ALL of your posts.
Thank you for your lovely story of your Rascal.  Your love of animals shines through.

The pound should not have given Rascal to our daughter.  Nor should our daughter have insisted on having such a high strung Springer Spaniel (in an apt.)  The pound refused her to a family with children, and to our daughter.  Our daughter persisted, visited the pound every day to see Rascal and asked again and again to have her.  I think she wore them down.
Our Rascal was afraid of men too I guess, because she growled at a lot of them including my husband who like his daughter couldn't be more of an animal lover.  She slept in a doggie bed with pillows in our bedroom, but every morning we found her lying on the floor with her head under the bed beside my husband.      go figure.

Bearly, hope you recover soon from you girls' weekend.  Don't blame you for not missing it, nothing like being with folks that know your history.

I read that you have been seeing this fella.  Wasn't sure that you'd got past the on-line stage.

Well, I hope HE is very special coz we all know YOU are!  enough said.

What does cubby think of him?

My friends daughter raised her son solo and never brought a man into the household.  Her son is 16 now and she is seeing someone.  When she told her son, he said "Good Mom, what took you so long?"

Blessings.
can

We cannot meet until December, he is out of the country on business.  I know this to be true.  I have his address there.  We text and IM every day.  He sends me pictures of the job site, too, with him in it.

I confuse easy bearly.  So you haven't met this guy in the flesh yet, but may do so in December?  . . . if you don't talk yourself out of it.

What does cubby think of him?

My friends daughter raised her son solo and never brought a man into the household.  Her son is 16 now and she is seeing someone.  When she told her son, he said "Good Mom, what took you so long?"

Blessings.

I never dated while my son was growing up.  As far as dating, he says, NO!

Friends daughter expected the same response from her son.

Provincial election coming up and I'm off to vote in the advance polls.

Spent the day with my Mom yesterday.  She wanted a new winter coat.  She chose red!
It looks great on her and adds some color to her face.

hubs is partridge hunting and I hope to utilise my time organising and cleaning.  Might have a house guest next month and feel pressured - and I might go on a little holiday trip in a few days....IF i can get it together.

have a great day Monkeys!

Hope hubby gets on cause I really hated that Danny Partridge.

He's BAAAAACK!  Got his limit...maybe we should call them all Danny!

Sounds great, a holiday is always fun.

Sorry about the pressure, Ikwym.

Red--what a great color for such a young lady, or should I say colour.

While your husband is hunting, maybe he could hunt down a nice guy for me.  lol

Yes, I look forward to my trip.  Just going for a short time as I will be someone's house guest. Having had so many in the past, I know how much work it can be.

color colour -bearly you're always on it!

Wish he could hunt down a nice guy for you.  Will a partridge do...it won't talk back.

What's with the guy you're emailing with?  aren't you sure if he's a nice guy?   I am so curious!

But mostly, I WANT THE BEST FOR THE BEST!   an angelic monkey
