He was kinda like our version of Bozo the clown but wasn't syndicated. His son is Gibby Haynes and turned out to be a musician in the B*tt Hole Surfers. LOL. Bet that made Mr Peppermint feel really proud of his son  Monkey Devil!

Hi Babybear.

We had a Rascal too.  So named by our daughter who got her from the pound when she was in university far away from home.  The pound had no history on her. Rascal was anxious, had separation anxiety etc. and our daughter was anything but the alfa and Rascal began to turn on her and others.  Our daughter was heartbroken so we took her in.  She left us in February - but in the seven years or so that she was here, she calmed down quite a bit, had a structured, predictable life and a garden which she patrolled and lots of squirrels to chase.
Frightened seems a good word to describe Rascal, even though she was not timid.

Hi Can--Rascal came to live with us before my husband died and they bonded immediately.  My husband always called every dog Rascal, like, "Come here you little rascal," so he decided to name him that.  He was an outside dog at the beginning, but little by little my husband let him come in for special occasions--then it got to the point that Rascal came in every night to watch Rush Limbaugh sitting in the recliner with my husband.  He always barked at Rush Limbaugh.  I never knew if that was approval or disapproval.  I never found out if Rascal was a Democrat or a Republican.  Shortly afterward, Rascal inched his way into the house permanently.  He was especially afraid of loud noises and fireworks.  I think he had been hurt that way.  On the 4th of July he would hear fireworks and tremble and cry and hide under the bed.  Once I actually got under the bed with him to comfort him.

Rascal was afraid of everything, especially men.  I assume it was a man who had hurt him.  But one day when there was a painter here and he was walking toward me with a can of paint in one hand, Rascal ran up and bit him behind the knee.  That sweet dog, who was afraid of his shadow, tried to protect me.  The painter understood.

After my husband died, Rascal would sit looking down the road waiting for him to come home.  It was very touching.  I never knew how old Rascal was, but he lived several years after that and sat in the reclining chair all by himself.

Hi Babybear.  You have such a wonderful way with words and I love to read ALL of your posts.
Thank you for your lovely story of your Rascal.  Your love of animals shines through.

The pound should not have given Rascal to our daughter.  Nor should our daughter have insisted on having such a high strung Springer Spaniel (in an apt.)  The pound refused her to a family with children, and to our daughter.  Our daughter persisted, visited the pound every day to see Rascal and asked again and again to have her.  I think she wore them down.
Our Rascal was afraid of men too I guess, because she growled at a lot of them including my husband who like his daughter couldn't be more of an animal lover.  She slept in a doggie bed with pillows in our bedroom, but every morning we found her lying on the floor with her head under the bed beside my husband.      go figure.

Can, that is so sad that they gave Rascal to her even though they knew better. Thankfully you and your husband got Rascal and she loved sleeping under your husband's bed. That is so sweet.  an angelic monkey

Thank you Can--That's very kind of you.

Your Rascal sounds so sweet.  They really do worm their way into your heart and into your life.  They choose their places in your house, and I guess Rascal chose the spot under your husband's side of the bed.  I have two open stairways in my house and my Rascal would put his head under the bottom step.  I think he thought his whole body was hidden.  My Stormy, the Yorkie, before she was blind would take a running start toward  the bottom step and flatten herself with her legs sticking out to the sides and slide under.  She kept it dusted there for me.  She turned into probably the largest Yorkie in the world and couldn't do it anymore--she weighed 12 pounds.

Now I have my Charlie who someone threw out by the side of the road in Crossville TN when he was a pup.  I found him on the internet and they brought him to me.  When they brought him, they had a couple of papers and I went upstairs to copy them.  Charlie jumped up on a sofa and the man from the shelter asked my sister-in-law if he were allowed to do that.  She told him Charlie could do just about anything he wanted.  He has diabetes now and had cataract surgery in February.  He's doing fine, but I have to have the fluid in his eyes checked often because of glaucoma.  But I love him to death. I'll do whatever is necessary for him, just like JSM did for sweet Josef.

And JSM--have a great trip to Chicago.  They have the time of their lives, you know. Even dance with their wives.

Took my son and mommy to Walmart last night (ya know a college student can not buy their own soap!) and when I saw the people mag I turned it around - and then my son went to all of the other checkouts and did the same - people gave us thumbs up!

Watched DWTS last night - never caught the "malfunction" but I did wonder why they panned to an audience that was "petrified".  Twice actually.  Made no sense to me - just thought the camera people were stooopid and the audience bored.  haha

Home today - so I have on the opening statements for Conrad Murray - ruh roh - I think DR. M is in deep you-know-what.
