"Team Paso Doble" - Ricki Lake, Hope Solo and Rob Kardashian - stressed themselves out during rehearsals so much that Maks got out of line and was shown shoving Hope a little too harshly, bringing her to tears. The judges raved about the final result, particularly citing Rob's ability to keep up with the male pro dancers. Scores: 9, 8, 9 = 26

On Tuesday's results show: Justin Bieber!

Dancing With the Stars' J.R. Martinez Picked for Grand Marshal of Tournament of Roses Parade

Dancing With the Stars contestant and respected war veteran J.R. Martinez has been chosen as the grand marshal of the 123rd Tournament of Roses.

The crowd pleaser will lead the Jan. 2 procession of floats and toss the coin before the kickoff of the 98th Rose Bowl game.

The Iraq War vet, who was seriously burned when his Humvee hit a land mine during the war, is a perfect fit for this year's "Just Imagine..." parade theme, said the Tournament of Roses Association.

Martinez says he's grateful for the opportunity to share his message of "hope and possibility" and honor all fellow wounded military personnel with the big game's coin toss.

Dancing With the Stars: J.R. Martinez Gets Ghost-Busted
November 1, 2011

J.R. Martinez’s attempt to tango to Ray Parker Jr.'s 1984 “Ghostbusters" fell a bit short of expectations, Monday night on Dancing With the Stars.

Nevertheless, the army veteran and his dance partner Karina Smirnoff managed to lock in a solid score of 25 (out of 30) one of the highest of the evening.

“The timing was so hard,” said Bruno Tonioli who judged Martinez and Smirnoff first. “You actually lost it a few times. [But] another very solid performance.”

'Dancing with the Stars' contestant Hope Solo speaks out on partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy controversy
November 1, 2011

Other dancers respond to Maksim's shove in the footage shown on Monday night

For those that have been watching Dancing with the Stars, it’s clear that professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy has been butting heads with the judges.

Monday night’s footage of Maksim rehearsing with his partner, Hope Solo, and those in his group dance, showed the dancer getting pretty rough with Solo. So much so that he appeared to shove her, causing him to walk out and Derek Hough to take over with Solo.

According to Zap2it, the other dancers have spoken out about the incident, and they all seem to agree.

Contestant Nancy Grace maintains that the same situation wouldn’t have happened between her and her partner, Tristan MacManus. “That's a different matter. That's something that shouldn't be done," she said.

Added MacManus, “No matter if you've been dancing for however long or just new to dancing, that shouldn't happen. I know as much as everyone else knows, but certainly viewing it [in the video package], it's something that shouldn't have happened.”

Hough took more of a neutral stance on the matter. When asked if the shove was too rough he responded, "it's not really our say.”

The recipient of the shove, Solo, doesn’t see any problem with it. “Hello, we're here for the seventh week," she said. "We're getting OK scores. You wouldn't want to see me if he wasn't tough on me. I'd be like, uh, I don't know what I'd be out there on the dance floor."

Reality TV World reports that Solo even took to her Twitter account to deny reports from Star magazine and other publications that note that she and Maks aren’t getting along.

Whooh-wheee!!   The author of this article Barry Koltnow tears Maks a new one!  (and DWTS)      Next time, tell us how ya' really feel, Barry!

http://www.kansascity.com/2011/10/31/3239979/fake-celebrities-ignite-real-controversy.html
Fake celebrities ignite real controversy
November 1, 2011

I have watched only one full episode of "Dancing with the Stars" in its 13 seasons, but I picked the right episode to watch.

If I hadn't watched it, I might have questioned my initial reaction to the dance show, which was that it was misnamed. I wondered aloud about calling it "Dancing with the Stars," and suggested renaming it "Dancing with the Vaguely Familiar."
 ::snipping2::
Maksim Chmerkovskiy, a name that rolls off the tongue like Brad Pitt, rudely ripped judge Len Goodman after the latter chided the dancer for his choreography. Chmerkovskiy is partnered with American soccer goalie Hope "Two Great Hands But Two Left Feet" Solo.

The professional dancer took exception to Goodman's criticism, suggesting that the judge retire after nearly 50 years in the business, and then whined about being judged by the judges (you heard me). In a backstage interview, he made matters worse by boasting that he (Maksim) should be treated better by the judges because he is the star of the show and solely responsible for its success. I should mention that he came on the show in its second season, and has never won the competition. Last year, he was paired with Kirstie Alley.

His self-serving statement was met with shock and dismay by the judges and other people associated with the show. To his credit, Maksim wouldn't back down on his criticism of the judge, although his agent/manager/publicist/hairdresser/plumber got him to back off a bit on his "king of the world" speech. The Ukrainian dancer said he was misunderstood, and didn't mean to imply that he was the sole star of the show.

I don't believe him. I believe that we heard exactly what he thinks of his part in making the show a success.

But I don't blame him. I blame you. And I blame me. We are both responsible for creating this Frankenstein monster

We were responsible the day we - the public and the entertainment media - allowed somebody at the network to call this TV show "Dancing with the Stars."

Somebody should have stood up and said, "There are no stars on this show," but that would have flown in the face of our obsession with all things celebrity. We are so desperate for anything labeled "celebrity" that we are willing to invent celebrities when none are to be found.
 ::snipping2::
Reality television is responsible for much of this elevation of pseudo-celebrities to full-celebrity status, but it's a chicken-and-egg situation. Can we blame reality television for inventing Kim Kardashian, or was Kim Kardashian invented because we needed to fill those time slots?

Long before the Kardashaians or Chmerkovskiys came along, celebrities have enjoyed a certain sense of entitlement granted by an adoring public.

That is understandable since we don't have a royal family of our own. We naturally bestow royal status on special members of our society. No, not teachers, nurses and soldiers, but rather singers, actors and astronauts. We can't help ourselves.
 ::snipping2::
In this TV-hyped battle between Maksim and Len on "Dancing with the Stars," we have a microcosm of everything that is wrong with our celebrity obsession.

On one side, we have the egomaniacal performer, who thinks he is more than the sum of his parts. Then again, who can fault him because he is mobbed by fans wherever he goes, and the media clamors to hear every word he utters.

On the flip side is the dance judge, who I assume worked in obscurity for decades until everything went topsy-turvy, and judges on television grew to be as familiar as judges on the U.S. Supreme Court. Thank you, Simon Cowell, for that.

There isn't much I can do about this phenomenon, except to continue to show no interest in the pseudo-celebrities being spawned on these shows.

Cher Says ‘DWTS’ Judges Were ‘Rude’ to Chaz
November 1, 2011

Transgender activist Chaz Bono, son of the multi-talented singer and actress, Cher, recently competed on the 13th season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” where he received tough criticism from the judges. His 65-year-old mother took to Twitter to speak her mind about the alleged bullying and what she called “cheap shots at Chaz,” based on attacks on his weight.

Chaz Bono stopped by the “Anderson” studio to talk about what he’s learned about himself and others from competing on “Dancing with the Stars” and received a surprise phone call from his mother, Cher, who tells Anderson what she really thinks about the judges’ criticism of her son.

"I just thought they were rude and it was gratuitous rudeness,” says Cher. “I just, I was just pissed off. I was really upset. Not that Chaz was voted off, but that they were so disrespectful."
