Missing children expert still hopeful on 5-year anniversary of Lunsford disappearanc

By Alex Wiederspiel in News | September 23, 2016 at 2:49PM

BENDALE, W.Va. — Saturday marks five years to the day since three-year-old Aliayah Lunsford went missing from her Lewis County home–with still no resolution of any kind for family members.

“Based on the experiences here at the National Center, we find children 98 to 99 percent of the time,” Robert Lowery, vice president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, said Friday in a phone interview with MetroNews. “Sometimes those are tragedies, but in most occasions the children are alive and reunited with their families. We’ve become, as a nation, much better at finding children and reuniting them.”

But in the search for Aliayah Lunsford–the trail seems to have gone cold.

BREAKING: Aliayah Lunsford's Mother Arrested in Florida

Posted: Nov 03, 2016 11:45 AM PDT
Updated: Nov 03, 2016 1:26 PM PDT

The mother of a Lewis County girl missing since 2011 has been arrested in Florida and is charged with her death.

Lena Lunsford, who now goes by Lena Lunsford-Conaway, was arrested by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office at approximately 11:41 a.m. in Pinellas County, Florida on a charge of 'Death of a Child by a Parent by Child Abuse.'

Aliayah Lunsford has been missing since her disappearance from the family home in September 2011.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, a deputy assisted detectives from West Virginia in locating Lunsford-Conaway.

Lunsford-Conaway has a St. Petersburg address, and her bond is set at $250,000 cash only. Lunsford-Conaway waived extradition, which could expedite her return to West Virginia.

Sheriff Adam Gissy of the Lewis County Sheriff's Department will hold a press conference on Friday morning at 11 a.m. with more information.

Five Years Later - Justice for Aliayah!!

Akin to Aliayah Lunsford case ... could it be that investigative dots are being connected behind the scenes ... investigative dots that imply that there will also be resolutions to the 2010 Kyron Horman Case and the 2012 Dylan Redwine case?

Police: Mom hid daughter's body before reporting her missing

By MICHAEL VIRTANEN, Associated Press

WESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A woman who hit her 3-year-old daughter on the head with a blunt object and watched her die after refusing to seek medical help hid the girl's body and then reported her missing five years ago, West Virginia authorities said Friday.

In a criminal complaint, Lewis County investigators said Lena Lunsford also instructed others who were with her at the time to keep quiet about what really happened. The complaint did not name the witnesses.
Lunsford reported Aliayah missing on Sept. 24, 2011. Now 34, she was arraigned Friday on a charge of death of a child by abuse and jailed with bail set at $250,000. She did not enter a plea. She was extradited from Florida to face the charges. A defense lawyer was not immediately assigned to her case, court officials said.

Lunsford family left with more questions than answers following Friday press conference

By Alex Wiederspiel in News | November 04, 2016 at 2:25PM

WESTON, W.Va. — Aliayah Lunsford’s remaining family members had choice words for the recently arrested Lena Lunsford, the woman that police believe dealt the fatal blow to her 3-year-old daughter on September 24, 2011.

“How could you do this to your own child?” Tina Smith, Aliayah’s aunt, said through numerous tears on the steps of the Lewis County Courthouse. “She didn’t deserve any of this. She was an innocent baby.”

“That woman has no heart,” Vickie Bowen, Aliayah’s great aunt and Lena Lunsford’s aunt, said Friday. “She has no soul. She does not deserve the title of mother.”

It appears there were witnesses. Why would they remain silent in the first place, let alone five years?  I wonder if Lena Lunsford had something on them to keep silence?  Did someone finally get a conscience?  Did someone slip up?  Or were the authorities able to piece together enough evidence to approach the witnesses to start making a case?  Poor little Aliayah.  She not only had an evil, murdering mother, she was surrounded by others that were witness to the abuse and her death.  And cover up.  I can't even begin to imagine...

If this is possibly true, and Aliayah's sibling/s knew the truth or discovered it, how awful for them.

By Alex Wiederspiel in News | November 12, 2016 at 6:27PM

BENDALE, W.Va. — With a soft, reassuring voice and a number family and community members in church, Reverend Ronald C. Brown led the first of what could be many memorials for Aliayah Lunsford, the three-year-old girl who went missing on September 24, 2011, and is now believed dead.

“More or less just talking to people,” Brown said, describing his role, Saturday. “Allowing them to know that Aliayah is safe in the arms of Jesus.”

It was a somber day for the community, according to Aliayah’s great aunt Vickie Bowen. But, she and Reverend Brown agreed it was a day that may be another step along the path to closure.

“They don’t have Aliayah’s body yet, but this gave them some closure that Aliayah is safe,” he said.

Rev. Brown asked for the community to also pray for Aliayah’s mother, Lena Lunsford. She has been charged, more than five years after the initial disappearance, with child abuse by a parent causing death.

“She’s the one that can lead the detectives or Sheriff’s department to the body,” he said. “She can do that, I believe, through prayer from everybody.”

WESTON, W.Va. — A Lewis County mother has been indicted on a number of charge connected with the 2011 death of her 3-year-old daughter.

She was indicted Monday on one count of murder of a child by parent, guardian or custodian or other person by refusal or failure to necessities, one count of death of a child by parent, guardian, custodian or other person by child abuse, one count of child abuse resulting in injury and one count of concealment of a deceased human body.

A Lewis County grand jury heard evidence in the case from prosecutors and agreed to indict.

Lunsford is accused of striking Aliayah Lunsford in the head with a solid object on Sept. 24, 2011. Deputies allege Lunsford refused to allow anyone in the home to call for help and the girl later died.

Lunsford trial given June starting date

http://wvmetronews.com/2017/03/10/lunsford-trial-given-june-starting-date/

By Alex Wiederspiel in News | March 10, 2017 at 10:22AM

WESTON, W.Va. — The highly anticipated trial of Lena Marie Lunsford-Conway, 34, formerly of Bendale, WV, indicted for numerous charges in connection with the 2011 death of her then 3-year-old daughter Aliayah, is set for June 19, 2017.

A Lewis County Grand Jury indicted Lunsford on March 7 on four felony charges.

Lunsford faces one count of murder of a child by parent, guardian or custodian or other person by refusal or failure to necessities, one count of death of a child by parent, guardian, custodian or other person by child abuse, one count of child abuse resulting in injury and one count of concealment of a deceased human body.

Motions during the discovery period must be filed by May 5, 2017 by Lunsford’s attorney, Barbara Harman-Schamberger. The state will have until May 19, 2017 to respond.

The location of Aliayah’s remains are still, reportedly, unknown.

Judge Jacob E. Reger declined to set bond for Lunsford.

The first pre-trial hearing is set for June 7, 2017 at 9 a.m.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin June 12, 2017.

Harman-Schamberger verbally indicated to Judge Reger that her client would prefer a trial later in the term.

Reger told Harman-Schamberger that she could file a motion for continuance at another time.
