Mom Missing When Kids Come Home From School

Peterson is described as white, 5 feet 3 inches tall, with a stocky build, green eyes and brown shoulder-length hair that has blond streaks.

She wears black glasses with pink speckles. Her tattoos include a butterfly on the neck, a purple bear on the left arm, a cross on the left shoulder, a daisy on the right shoulder and a purple rose on the right breast.

She was reported missing when her children returned home from school, Ross police Detective Brian Kohlhepp said. Her car was left at the home, he said.

Police search for missing Pittsburgh-area mother

Police say Peterson's purse and cell phone were also gone, though her car remains parked in the driveway.

Darlene Peterson, the woman's mother, tells police and reporters that it's unusual for her daughter not to take the car because she has a recent knee injury and can't walk long distances.

Mr. Peterson handed out maps and instructions to the volunteers and directed them where to search. He said the volunteers are searching a five-mile radius of his daughter's home on North Fremont Avenue.

Those searching residential areas were grouped in pairs--one on each side of a street--and those searching wooded areas worked in groups of four.

A pair of sandals were found on a residential street but it was unclear whether or not they were his daughter's, Mr. Peterson said.

The search was expected to continue until 4 or 5 p.m.

He said he has already handed out 140 fliers with his daughter's description and spent about 14 hours along the shore of local rivers.

"I don't know which way to go," he said, "but I'm trying."
