I would say that the biggest different is in the dancing.  Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer weren't really dancers.  Julianne Hough is a great dancer.

Footloose is still shakin' without Bacon

Musical remake puts its best foot forward

Last Updated: 12:01 PM, October 14, 2011

MOVIE REVIEW:

"Footloose” won me over early, with a sequence in which the hero gets all heavy metal while restoring his badass ... VW Bug. Later there is the best demolition derby involving slow-moving flaming school buses I’ve ever seen. By the time four little girls teach a dorky guy to dance to (the original) “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” I was a gelatinous blob of pure affection. Bring on “Flashdance” 2.0.

The remake retains the strongest elements and improves on some of the weaker ones of 1984’s version. This time, for instance, the leads can actually dance, and they’re both charmers. Ren, a Boston kid who moves back to his late mother’s hometown in the South (apparently Georgia) to be raised by his uncle after her death, is played by Kenny Wormald, a former backup dancer for Justin Timberlake who sulks without pouting and is cool without looking like he cares whether you look at him. With his upswept quiff, he brings off a rumor of a hint of a whisper of James Dean. He even manages to (barely) pull off the scene, so embarrassing in the original, in which he must express his rage via solo interpretive dance.

Footloose's Kenny Wormald Recalls Those Who 'Made Fun of' Me for Dancing
October 15, 2011

Kenny Wormald is having the last laugh.

Once bullied for being a male dancer, the Footloose actor, 27, shows off his fancy footwork in one of the most anticipated movies of the season and recently performed a seductive number in front of millions on Dancing with the Stars with Julianne Hough.

"I used to get made fun of … especially growing up in Boston," Wormald told Celebuzz. "Kids are terrible, they don't realize how heavy words can be."

Years later, his haters now kiss up to him.

"I go home and see those same kids and they're congratulating me," Wormald says. "I smile and say thanks, but I really want to throw them into a locker."

Kevin Bacon 'furious' over having a dance double in 'Footloose'
October 15, 2011

"It's like a starting pitcher getting taken out of a game -- no one wants to be told they can't get the guy out," Kevin Bacon said.

 ::snipping2::
While Bacon is justifiably proud of himself and the film -- which went on to earn more than 10 times its reported $8 million budget -- he does have a few regrets. For one, while he says he did a majority of his own dancing, he wished he had been able to do some of the flips and complicated dance moves in the movie's famous warehouse scene. "Are you kidding? I was furious," Bacon says with a smile. "It's like a starting pitcher getting taken out of a game -- no one wants to be told they can't get the guy out."

On the day of the movie's famous warehouse shoot, "I had a stunt double, a dance double and two gymnastics doubles," recalls Bacon. "There were five of us in the f---ing outfit, and I felt horrible."

One thing that Bacon was unwilling to do was stay quiet about his dance double.

"When the movie came out, the studio told me to never mention that they used a double," he says. "While I was in no position to do this, I told them, ''You are out of your f---ing mind!' "

October 12, 2011

The original 'Footloose' (1984) was such a huge pop culture sensation that it turned several lesser-known performers into stars -- some of whom are still famous today. Where'd the cast and crew of 'Footloose' go after the film earned $80 million at the domestic box office? Here's Moviefone's guide to what became of the 'Footloose' players, both those who danced their way into Hollywood immortality and those who struggled to stay in step.
