Hunter makes court appearance in missing daughter's case

During her initial court appearance, Jerice Hunter gripped her arms, nodded her head and rocked back and forth as the wait got to her.

"Is this legal," she said. "They do this to everybody?"

The judge excused herself from the bench several times. After over an hour sitting in her jail stripes in the courtroom, a brief outburst from the frazzled defendant. "I don't even know what's going on. This is not fair," Hunter cried out.

The judge would not say why the intial appearance was being pushed back to Tuesday.

Maybe her head nodding and rocking back and forth could possibly be drug withdrawal.  JMHO

PHOENIX -- The teenage sister of a missing 5-year-old Arizona girl told police her mother instructed her to lie about the girl's disappearance, that her mother kept the girl in a closet, and that the girl had cuts and bruises before she was reported missing, according to a court document released Tuesday.

``(She) reported that Jhessye's hair had been pulled out and described Jhessye as not looking alive and that she looked like a zombie,'' the document said. ``(She) said that the closet where Jhessye had been looked like a grave and smelled like dead people.''

The document was released minutes after the girl's mother, Jerice Hunter, had her first court appearance, during which she proclaimed her innocence.

"I did plead not guilty, of course," said Hunter in court. The mother tested positive for THC, indicating marijuana use and was informed that she is now a suspect in a homicide.

The teen said that a few days before Jhessye disappeared, her mother spent the entire day cleaning the apartment and cleaning her shoes from the closet with soap and bleach. Police said they found a receipt that showed Hunter bought food and a bottle of bleach two days before she reported her daughter missing.

 ::snipping2::
The teen told police that Hunter had instructed her to lie about her sister, Jhessye Shockley, being missing, the document said. She also said Jhessye had been abused and had black eyes before she disappeared.

She also said that several weeks ago Hunter became angry when she returned home to find Jhessye wearing a long T-shirt while watching TV with a neighbor boy, telling the girl that she was a ``ho'' before taking her into a bedroom, according to the document.

The teen said she could hear her sister screaming and crying in the room, the document said.

Abuse detailed in Jhessye Shockley case
November 22, 2011

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Court documents released Tuesday detail abuse related to a 5-year-old Glendale girl who has been missing since Oct. 11.

The documents say that Jhessye Shockley's teenage sister told police that their mother, Jerice Hunter, kept the little girl in a closet. The teen told investigators that she had seen several bruises and cuts on Jhessye's face and body.

The sister also said that Hunter told her and her siblings to lie to police about Jhessye being missing.

The teen said that a few days before Jhessye was reported missing, Hunter had spent the entire day cleaning the apartment and had cleaned her shoes from the closet with soap and bleach. Police said credit card records indicate Hunter had purchased a bottle of bleach on Oct. 9.

Hunter was arrested Monday on a felony count of child abuse. She is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Hunter had her first court appearance Tuesday morning and said she was innocent.

Could it be that Jhessye's older sister's reference to "zombie" implied that the little girl was deceased?

Mom of missing Jhessye Shockley a homicide suspect

PHOENIX, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- An Arizona woman charged with child abuse has been told she is suspected of killing her missing 5-year-old daughter.

At a court appearance Tuesday, Jerice Hunter of Phoenix looked surprised when informed she was a murder suspect, The Arizona Republic reported. Bail was set at $100,000.

Hunter was arrested Monday, weeks after she reported Jhessye Shockley missing.

A court document described statements from Jhessye's older sisters about their mother's treatment of the little girl.

An older sister told investigators she last saw Jhessye in September. She said she found the 5-year-old in a closet and that she looked like a "zombie."

Hunter did not report her daughter missing until Oct. 11.

Document: Missing 5-year-old Ariz. girl was abused

<snipped>

Investigators declined to say what that information was, but the court document details a recent interview they conducted with Hunter's 13-year-old daughter, who was removed from the home by state Child Protective Services the day after her sister was reported missing.

The document, a probable cause statement, said the teenager recently began to talk to her foster mother about Jhessye, saying that "she was told by her mother, Jerice, to lie to police about Jhessye being missing."

Police then interviewed the teen, who told them that she did not see Jhessye the day she disappeared, reversing her previous story to authorities that she had seen the girl.

She also said that several weeks ago Hunter became angry when she returned home to find Jhessye wearing a long T-shirt while watching TV with a neighbor boy, telling the girl that she was a "ho" before taking her into a bedroom, according to the document.

The teen said she could hear her sister screaming and crying in the room, the document said.

She also told police that Hunter kept Jhessye in a bedroom closet and deprived her of food and water, and that she had seen the girl with black eyes and bruises and cuts to her face and body, according to the document.

"(She) reported that Jhessye's hair had been pulled out and described Jhessye as not looking alive and that she looked like a zombie," the document said. "(She) said that the closet where Jhessye had been looked like a grave and smelled like dead people."

The teen said that a few days before Jhessye disappeared, her mother spent the entire day cleaning the apartment and cleaning her shoes from the closet with soap and bleach. Police said they found a receipt that showed Hunter bought food and a bottle of bleach two days before she reported her daughter missing.

Hunter told police that she last saw Jhessye on Oct. 11 after she left her in her older siblings' care while she ran an errand.

At a news conference Monday, Glendale Police Sgt. Brent Coombs said authorities do not expect to find Jhessye alive, but he didn't explain why. He also said Hunter is the investigation's "No. 1 focus."

Janet...I feel  that Jhessye WAS dead when sister said that she looked like a zombie....poor baby..Marc Klaas had a good read on his blog today about missing children..Jhessye being given back to her mother after she had already spent time in prison for child abuse, was married to a register sex offender etc...it is outrageous that these children were place back in that home..where was the rest of the family, the children's bio dads? grandparents, etc...case workers?? this child had no chance..no one to help any of them..
