Glendale police to search Mobile landfill for missing girl

The search for a missing Glendale girl will soon center on a landfill south of Phoenix.

Glendale police confirmed Tuesday that they will comb through trash at the Butterfield Station Landfill in search of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley's body. They hope to begin the effort by the end of the month.

It's expected to take several weeks.

 ::snipping2::
Police suspect Jhessye's body was dumped in a Tempe trash bin, miles from her Glendale home, and taken from there to the landfill in Mobile.

Those who have been involved in past landfill searches caution that police face an arduous and expensive task.

 ::snipping2::
Because it has been months since the girl disappeared, police will be looking for bones, said Arpad Vass, a Tennessee-based scientist who has helped with landfill searches.

But Glendale police say they are emboldened by the idea of finding the girl reported missing Oct.11.

"We feel like we've identified the right location and we're going to give it our best shot," said Officer Tracey Breeden, a Glendale police spokeswoman.

 ::snipping2::
Police have repeatedly said Jhessye's mother, Jerice Hunter, is the focus of their investigation. She was arrested Nov.21 on suspicion of child abuse involving Jhessye but released as prosecutors said they didn't want to create a situation of double jeopardy if they later pursued a murder case against her.

Details of the search warrant were sealed until Friday.

Court records show investigators seized more than 100 items as evidence including kids' clothes, diaries, journals and bedding.

They collected carpet samples from the master bedroom closet, water samples from the sink pipes and cleaning supplies.

Shockley was reported missing on Oct. 11, 2011.

Stay with KPHO.com and watch CBS 5 tonight for Donna Rossi's report on the Glendale police investigation.

Police had obtained the warrant to search Jerice Hunter’s apartment on Nov. 21, hours before they arrested her on suspicion of child abuse involving 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley.

Hunter was later released after prosecutors said they didn’t want to create a situation of double jeopardy if they later decided to pursue a felony murder case against her.

Police intend to search the Butterfield Station Landfill south of the Phoenix area in Mobile in the coming weeks in hopes of finding the young girl’s body.

I would imagine the police would have a difficult time determining exactly where to search.  They don't know which day Jhessye actually 'disappeared' from the home.  They don't know exactly where the momster disposed of her at.  The area may have more than one land fill.  She may've used multiple dumpsters if she used dumpsters at all.  And the landfill may not use a system that allows for tracking of where a truck's contents are placed in the landfill.  Then you have to think about incinerators that may be used.  Even if they could determine the exact day that Jhessye's remains were taken from the home, they still have lots of unknowns to factor in to where to start looking.   I'm not so confident in criticizing LE just yet.

This is one case where I would like to see an attorney file a law suit against the state for damages done to the children who were all returned to this monster after she was released from prison for child abuse (and torture).

Part of her sentence should have been that upon release she can no longer be in contact with children when alone and certainly not to have custody of them returned to her.

Whipping children with belts and cords until their skin is open and bleeding is an act of a sadist.  Sadists do not suddenly realize the err of their ways and become compassionate, able to care in a responsible way for the same children they tortured.

This is not rocket science.

Video at link.
GLENDALE -- Police say they are close to making an arrest in the disappearance and presumed death of Jhessye Shockley, the 5-year-old Glendale girl who vanished in October.

Earlier this month, the Glendale Police Department announced that it is putting together an operation to search Butterfield Station Landfill for the little girl's body. That search is still in the planning phase, but it is expected to get under way later this month.

Detectives also were awaiting the forensic results on evidence collected from the Shockley home during a search in November. That analysis reportedly is now complete.
