Reverse Multiple Sclerosis by eating the Paleo Diet, increasing vitamin D, and avoiding artificial food additives

Saturday, January 05, 2013 by: Katherine Leonard MS, NC

(NaturalNews) Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, degenerative disease of the nerves in the brain and spine. The disease causes the body to attack an insulating substance around nerve cells called myelin. When the myelin is damaged, the function of the nerves deteriorate, resulting in muscle weakness, imbalance or loss of coordination, vision loss, and tremors. Research is now showing that the disease can be reversed by adopting a paleolithic diet (primarily meat, veggies, and nuts), optimizing vitamin D levels, and avoiding artificial ingredients, especially aspartame.

It is now understood that environmental factors, especially diet, play a large role in the development of this degenerative disease. The Paleo Diet, consisting of organic, whole foods from grass-fed meats, vegetables, fermented foods, and nuts, is packed with nutrients that protect the nervous and immune systems. The Paleo Diet is high in B vitamins, iodine, and omega-3 fatty acids (animal based EPA and DHA) that support mitochondrial function and myelin growth and repair.

 ::snipping2::

I encourage everyone to have their Vit D levels monitored especially if they have any type of auto immune disease, ask for Vit D hydroxy level testing, simple blood test.

Def in Vit D can also affect Thyroid.

There is a little known illness called Transverse Myelitis, an inflammation of the spinal cord. It can strike without any warning or it can be caused by 20 different things, including Flu shots, cat bites, MS. It has stricken all ages, children to adults, men women.

It happened to my dau March 26th 2011, she got up, made her bed was watching the news on TV, got a pain in her neck, the pain spread across her shoulder (she said it felt like a snake wrapped in the muscles) down her arms, then on down to her toes, within 1/2 hr she was paralyzed from neck down, the inflammation hit between C4 & C7.

She had the only treatments available, IV Steriods for 5 days, Iv IgG (iirc) for 3 days, then was transferred to Balto for Rehab. After 6 weeks she came home. Later this month they plan to put in a Baclofen pump.

For most, Drs never find out what caused it, as in Sherie's case, they tested her for everything and No known cause was the result. It just happened.

Many medical staff in Er's have never heard of it, as in Sherie's case, they had no idea what was wrong with her, thankfully we have a Neuro who saw her after 8 hrs, suspected TM, got on the internet, researched and  started the Steriod treatment. He remained in contact with John's Hopkins for her treatment until she was transferred

I am trying to spread awareness for this terrible condition, it is awful.

Al Unser's grandaughter Cody was stricken with it early in life. Cody has a foundation: http://www.cufsf.org/Codys_Story.aspx

FB has many photos of Victims of TM several albums.

For some, they regain use and for some they don't.

OS Prayers for your daughter. Not surprising I have never heard of this. Thank God the Neuro Dr was on the ball and went looking for some answers. I hope she is recovering after her rehab and treatment. We take so many things for granted and forget what a miracle the body is. You and your daughter and family are in my prayers.

Please pray for my Mom.  She appears to be in heart failure due to sleep apnea.

I have been telling her doctor for over a year and probably more than 2 she has sleep apnea.  This explains all the behavior issues she is having.  No one listened to me.

I'm sorry Bearly.  I'll add your Mom to my prayers.

Thanks, Muffy!

Thinking of you Bearly and praying for your mom. Hugs.

Thanks, they are moving her to telemetry.  Her blood pressure is going crazy.

Thanks for the prayers, Sherie was recovering some until last Oct, and I just read the IgG lasts 3 to 6 mths, maybe that is why her recovery stopped. She can use her thumb and forefinger on rt hand, nothing on left at all, she can take abt 10 steps on some days, she has so much spasticity

http://www.nationalmssociety.org/about-multiple-sclerosis/what-we-know-about-ms/symptoms/spasticity/index.aspxit

makes it difficult for her to move, but we are thankful for what she has regained.

she has a caregiver and loving family so we can keep her at home. Sherie was 45 when this happened, almost 2 yrs.

I found an article, will try to find it again, telling people to make copy and take to ER for Dr's explaining TM. The steroid treatment in early stage is most important.

Sherie says to make every minute count, walk, move, use hands and legs. Ya just never know.

Sherie has been on Baclofen and Lyricia since onset. Dr's are hoping with pump it will help with the spasticity, and they will be able to reduce dosage of both. She is at max dose. I have read about good results with the pump in GA. Her legs get like steel, they did a test run few months ago and it really made her legs moveable. She goes to surgeon tomorrow, should be within a week or so. Hopefully she will be able to get into PT and OT after it's in.

I forgot to mention, the day it happened, Dr Janjua (neuro) did spinal tap, and nothing showed up, however he went ahead with the Steroids, abt 7 days later, he did another tap and it showed up.

I have read abt patients going to ER with numbness in arms or legs and being sent home only to return a few days later paralyzed.

The key to treatment and recovery is Steroids.

They divide recovery in 1/3's, 1/3 never recover at all, 1/3 recover some, 1/3 recover almost completely. Sherie is in the middle of the 1/3 that recover some.

I am trying to find the article, can't seem to find it right now but I will keep looking.

Sherie has put the pump on hold for now, she is scared, we are trying to get as much information for her to help her with her decision, it is scary but she doesn't have any other choice right now. I will try to post from time to time.

I just hope everyone learns about this horrible disease, I read there are 1500 new cases each year in the US. With awareness will come funding for research. It is sad to see pictures of little children with TM and Dr's don't know what the heck caused it or the struggles some have trying to get a diagnosis because the Dr doesn't know, treatment is limited, it's just horrible.

Eight weeks smoke free.

This is weird weather today----70 degrees, broke an all-time record today.  It was beautiful outside.  I had to go to the courthouse today.  I parked on the square and walked all the way to the courthouse. It was just so beautiful out I couldn't resist it.  Had to go to the 3rd floor of the courthouse so I walked up 3 flights of stairs.  I haven't been able to do that in some time without getting out of breath.

I'm so sorry OS!  I will keep you all in my prayers.  It's been years ago so I don't know for sure, but I think this may be the same thing that someone I knew suffered from.  They moved shortly after she became ill to be near her family in Tennessee (so they could help take care of her) and over the years I've lost track of them.  But I do remember the onset being much like Sherie's.  She was in her early thirties iirc, and did regain some movement in her hands and arms before they moved but she was still in a wheelchair and needed a lot of assistance.  It was really sad...they were business owners and a very outgoing couple in the community with a young son.  I'm going to see if anyone I know is still in touch with them and see what I can find out.  If it is the same illness, I'm sure they've tried every available treatment.

Thanks Klaas.  I am trying to be a little more active lately.  I know I am putting on a few pounds so I am choosing to park further away from stores and walk further, walk up stairs instead of using elevators and I am using my tread mill also.  I am still amazed by how much better I feel.  I guess I never realized how much smoking had taken over my life.  Now, I still dream I smoke a cigarette.  I did last night.  When I left the courthouse today some guy was in his car with the windows down and was smoking like a freight train.  I had to linger just a little to smell the smoke---it had been so long since I smelled it.  But I know enough that if I touch one cigarette then it is over.

I have a medical question and didnt know where to turn. I thought I would try the Monkeys in hopes someone out there can calm me down. I didn't see a subject in the medical thread so I'm asking here. I hope that is ok. My neurologist ordered an MRI withOUT contrast. (Long story short I've been seeing things that aren't there, like a flock of grey birds in the sky). Well half way through the MRI they pulled me out and added the dye. Is there a reason to be concerned that the test was ordered without dye but the dye was used anyway? I greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer. I wasn't very worried for the test until that happened. Thanks!

RoxiBalboa Here is a link that is straightforward and to the point. About the differences of the two kinds of MRI's with and without contrast. I would say they wanted to make sure they got the best imagine. Hope this helps. That way you wouldn't have to go back and take another one.

Thanks!
hi Roxi

I really can't answer your question but I had both tests run a couple of years ago.  But I knew ahead of time they would do both.

Seems to me a doctor would have had to order the dye test? I don't see the MRI people doing it without an order?

When will you get results from the tests and you can ask them at that time?  Take care - I'm sure there is a smart monkey out there who can help better than me - Cadillac

Thank you Green Eyes and Cadillac. I guess that is what triggered my concern. That my doctor had ordered without contrast but they decided to use it anyway. I will just tell myself it was to clear the air out of my head Smile I hope to get results in a couple days. Thanks again for taking time to respond.
