Is that a cross on the Judges table?

It is.  So isn't a "sincere confession" one that begins "I have sinned through MY OWN FAULT" and not try to blame everybody else in the whole world?  Mea culpa!  That is all.

Roman Catholicism is the official religion of  Peru. [ Heritage of the conquest by Spain--circa 1530. ]

Another one of Anita van der Sloots bubbles has burst.

Waiting for the Sentence: Joran van der Sloot's Slow Road to Justice
By Lucien Chauvin / Lima Friday, Jan. 06, 2012

<snipped>

Already infamous as the main suspect in the disappearance and likely death of the young American Natalee Holloway in Aruba on May 30, 2005, van der Sloot was in court for the first day of his long-delayed trial for the murder of a Peruvian woman on the exact same day in 2010.

He fidgeted in his seat, fanning himself and tapping his jeans-clad leg while the court reporter read through a long list of legal nuts and bolts. He seemed to nod off a few times, slouching in his seat to the consternation of Judge Victoria Montoya. She called on him to stand, reminding him that he was in a court of law and needed to respect protocol. He listened to most of the proceedings in Spanish, turning only once to a court-appointed translator for her to clarify a point for him in Dutch. The translator provided the only bit of levity in the courtroom, stunning the judge when she responded "no" to the question, "Do you believe in God?" It is a question put before anyone who has a role in a trial in deeply Catholic Peru.

ANITA VAN DER SLOOT: It's extremely tough. He's in custody now for 13, 14 days, I think. I have lost count. And I love my child. I believe in him 200 percent. And it's just like a big nightmare. We don't know how to deal with it because you can't deal with it. We think about the family a lot because their life is a nightmare, too, but our life is a nightmare, too.

ANITA VAN DER SLOOT:   And he was telling me, Mommy, look at me, I'm reading the Bible. Did you ever think about that? And I think it's great. It's difficult to read.

Consider the outcomes are unknown ... the next two days will be difficult in the lives of Beth Holloway as well as the parents of Stephany Flores.  My prayers are with them.

I wanted to thank everyone for their pictures and links today.  I don't have much time to read and reading your comments helps.

Magnolia, I find it very ironic that Natalee's hearing to be declared dead is the day before the monster gets sentenced.

I do too, San.   The hearing is at 9:30AM, CST in the Jefferson County Courthouse, in Birmingham.
I think it is a sad day to declare Natalee dead for $2,000.

I know how you feel Magnolia.

I've thought about that a lot, and I truly hope there is more to it than that.

If there's not, it is sad indeed.

My guess would be that the lawyers alone cost more than that to get it done.  jmo

These pictures are just chilling to me.  Looking right into the eyes of a multi murderer.  He is evil.

Yes, he is evil.  And he should NEVER be free to harm anyone again.  EVER.

He is paying.  He looks like he is 45 years old.  Life in that jail must be a little harder than he expected.  Let him rot there.

Jean Casarez said she received an email from Stephany's brother Enrique, he said the family has decided they will be present in court on Friday for the sentencing.

The family also told her that Joran's dna was under Stephany's fingernails.

Nancy Grace has gone over the injuries to Stephany and the scene of the crime again tonight.

Poor Stephany.

IMO...The sentence should have been life in prison for this crime, ONLY because Peru doesn't have the DEATH PENALTY!

True, but think about it...a lot of people didn't think he'd live to see his trial!

Only this evil POS!

I would have felt better if he'd had some obvious injuries...like an eyeball hanging out or something!

Sure it's punishment that he can't be out conning people, gambling, etc.

I know that it's wrong of me, but honestly... I want him to really suffer!

I'm so tired of HIM proclaiming to be the VICTIM no matter what he's done!

It's TIME for him to KNOW what it feels like to actually BE a VICTIM!

Her Position has not Changed

Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012
Judge asked to declare Natalee Holloway dead

<snipped>

Attorneys for the Holloway family said both of Natalee Holloway's parents plan to be in the Birmingham courtroom on Thursday.

Beth Holloway's attorney, John Q. Kelly, said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Flores family during these extraordinarily painful and public proceedings. We hope they find some measure of privacy, inner strength and peace as time goes by."

Kelly said that once van der Sloot is sentenced on Friday, he expect U.S. authorities to try to bring him to Alabama to face pending federal charges accusing him of extorting $25,000 from Beth Holloway to reveal the location of her body daughter's body in Aruba. Kelly went to Aruba for the revelation, but van der Sloot did not deliver.

Natalee Holloway's parents were divorced in 1993. She was raised by her mother in Mountain Brook, but spent every other weekend with her father, an insurance agent in Meridian, Miss.

At a court hearing in September, Beth Holloway sent a lawyer to oppose her husband's efforts to have their daughter declared dead. Kelly said Wednesday that Beth Holloway's position has not changed.

Beth Holloway opposes petition to declare Natalee dead

Updated: Sep 22, 2011 12:47 PM PDT

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Beth Holloway will oppose the petition filed by Dave Holloway to declare their daughter Natalee legally dead, said Beth Holloway's spokesperson Sunny Tillman on Thursday.

Dave Holloway filed a petition in a Jefferson County probate court in June 2011 to have his daughter declared legally dead. The petition will be heard in probate court in Birmingham tomorrow.

"Beth intends to oppose Dave's inexplicable effort to have Natalee declared dead," her attorney John Q. Kelly said today, according to a release sent by Tillman.

"Beth gave birth to and raised Natalee, and will always hope and pray for Natalee's safe return. If Dave seeks closure on such a personal and sensitive matter, it should be respected, but not imposed upon Beth in such an adversarial and public manner," Kelly said

Sorry...I shouldn't have said all of that in my prior post.  I am just very angry after watching him in court, and then seeing again what he did to Stephany...hearing Dave Holloway's voice...and everyone talk about the injustice in Aruba...and then John Ludwick blaming Stephany for provoking Joran!

I'm just so sad and ANGRY!

It was one of those posts I should have typed and erased without posting...

 Sad

At least Nancy Grace told John Ludwick how CRAZY he sounds!

I hope she won't give him air time again.  Period.

Van der Sloot Pleads Guilty to Killing Peru Woman
Updated: 01/11/2012 6:48 PM KSAX.com
By: Jennie Olson

 ::snipping2::
The victim's father, circus impresario and former race car driver Ricardo Flores, attended the opening of the trial but not Wednesday's hearing.

Reached by phone before Van der Sloot's plea, he said he wasn't watching the trial on TV but would await word from his lawyer.

"This matter hurts us," he told The Associated Press.
 ::snipping2::
Ricardo Flores said he doesn't think Van der Sloot is at all contrite over his daughter's death and wants to see the defendant placed in conditions of greater deprivation.

That could include being extradited to the United States to stand trial there once he's been sentenced in Peru.

Peru's Foreign Ministry says it has no U.S. extradition request for Van der Sloot.

U.S. authorities have requested his arrest through Interpol "should he be released on the charges there" so he could be brought to Birmingham, Alabama, for trial, said Peggy Sanford, a spokeswoman the U.S. Attorney's office there.

No members of Van der Sloot's family have attended the trial.

His lawyer said his client's mother, Anita, did not want the media attention. The defendant's father, a prominent lawyer, died of a heart attack at age 57 in February 2010.

Joran van der Sloot pleads guilty to killing Peru woman
Posted by Aruba Daily on January 11th, 2012

Joran van der Sloot pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the 2010 murder of a 21-year-old Peruvian woman he met at a Lima casino who was killed five years to the day of the unsolved disappearance in Aruba of an American teen in which he remains the main suspect.

“Yes, I want to plead guilty. I wanted from the first moment to confess sincerely,” he told the court. “I truly am sorry for this act. I feel very bad.”

Van der Sloot’s lawyer argued after his client’s brief statement that the defendant killed Stephany Flores as a result of “extreme psychological trauma” he suffered from the fallout of the 2005 disappearance on the Caribbean island of Aruba of Natalee Holloway.

Joran pleads guilty hope of remission
Wednesday, January 11, 2012 8:17

ORANGE CITY / LIMA - Joran himself in court this morning in Lima, Peru guilty of the murder and robbery of Stephany Flores (21) on May 30, 2010. He says that his earlier confession is true and lay down reluctantly in charge of the prosecution. Moments later he expressed his regret. Three co-defendants in the case declared innocent.
 ::snipping2::
With this confession Joran hopes thus reduced sentence. It is because a maximum sentence of 30 years and a fine of 200,000 soles (converted about 130,000 florins) overhead. With a "sincere confession", it is customary that the judge sentences will apply. After the confession his lawyer Jimenez was a brief plea to keep. It asked the court to take into account the "psychological state" of his client. Joran would - when he killed Flores brought - from post-traumatic stress suffered because of the death of his father. And, says Jimenez, Joran has always cooperated with the law. Finally, counsel requests to the Natalee Holloway disregard the verdict.

The lawyer for the family responds to the statements made by the defense lawyer after Joran's confession.

'Van der Sloot is not sorry'
Wednesday January 11, 2012 | 5:13

Edward Alvarez Flores family lawyer Ramírez criticized the statements of the Dutch, who said he felt very bad about killing Stephany, and he was seen smiling in the audience today
 ::snipping2::
"That man (Van der Sloot) is not sorry for anything. These things (too cheerful attitude) must take into account the room and not risk putting a minimum sentence or less listening to the arguments, I would say poor and without support of the defense (...) That man is a psychopath ", said Alvarez told reporters.

He noted that it is contradictory for the defense of Van der Sloot stated that this has worked with the justice, who questioned the statement to the police, reported the interpreter to the Dutch embassy and recommended because you filed a habeas corpus which alleged that there had violated the rights of his client.

"During the whole process was silent, although it is a right, but on the grounds that there was no interpreter. However, there comes the trial and says it needs a translator because he understands and speaks Spanish. So what was that? A filibuster, "said Alvarez.

Finally, he recalled that the main suspect in the disappearance of American Natalee Holloway was investigated by the police of his country by extortion, and the United States requested his extradition for the same offense.

"In Holland lifted the secrecy of communications and two friends of Van der Sloot. There he discovered that he told them he met a girl who had money and that she was his goal. So how can we speak of a sudden it was an act (the murder of Flores), this it was premeditated, "said the lawyer.

I think you are correct on this. I know this is against Beth's wishes -- but, there must be some compelling reason for Dave to do this. I'm just sorry there is such acrimony between Beth and Dave. I would like to side with Beth here -- but I just don't know enough to take sides.

There is no requirment that compells Dave Holloway to "prove" that Natalee is deceased to obtain a declaration of death but ... Beth Holloway is required to "prove" that Natalee is alive for the judge to deny Dave's motion.  Maybe there is something I am not getting but ... the playing field does not appear to be even.

Anyways ... what will be will be.  Whatever the outcome Natalee's Mom will take the high road.

Natalee Holloway's parents prepare for death declaration hearing
January 11, 2012

<snipped>

Dave Holloway's attorneys say both of her parents are preparing for hopefully a final hearing.

"All of the legal T's have been crossed and the I's have been dotted. No one has come forward with any evidence that Natalee Holloway is alive," White said.

A judge gave about a 3 and a half month window to prove otherwise.

Attorney Mark White says he's spoken with Beth Holloway's counsel and his client.

White says if the court declares Holloway deceased it will provide the family -- an end to years of turmoil.

"You can never heal from something like this the most you can probably do is scar, but at least that process of closure is underway," White said.
