Libyan forces 'capture Gaddafi'
October 20, 2011

Libya Crisis

Commanders for Libya's transitional authorities say they have captured ousted leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.

Unconfirmed reports say Col Gaddafi has been killed, and AFP obtained a mobile-phone image apparently showing his face covered in blood.
The reports came after transitional forces claimed control of Sirte, Col Gaddafi's birthplace.

The colonel was toppled in August after 42 years in power. The International Criminal Court is seeking his arrest.

Nato, which has been running a bombing campaign in Libya for months, said it carried out an air strike earlier on Thursday that hit two pro-Gaddafi vehicles near Sirte.

The head of the National Transitional Council (NTC) Mustafa Abdul Jalil is expected to give a national TV address soon.

Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam says fighters on the ground have told him that Col Gaddafi is dead.

At the scene

If the reports of Col Gaddafi's capture are true, then Mohammed al-Bibi is the man of the moment. Brandishing a golden pistol which he said belonged to Colonel Gaddafi he was hoisted up onto the shoulders of his comrades.

"Allah akbar" (God is great), they chanted as they unleashed volleys into the air. Mohammed, a fighter in his 20s, wearing a New York Yankees baseball cap, said he had found the colonel hiding in a hole in the ground. He told the BBC that the former Libyan leader said to him simply: "Don't shoot".

Rebel fighters say the colonel has been taken by ambulance to Misrata. If this is the case and the rest of Sirte has indeed fallen then it will mark a turning point for Libyan revolution - the point at which it will be hoped, the fighting ends and the political process begins.

Qaddafi Is Dead, Libyan Officials Say
October 20, 2011

TRIPOLI, Libya — Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, the former Libyan strongman who fled into hiding after rebels toppled his regime two months ago in the Arab Spring’s most tumultuous uprising, was killed Thursday as fighters battling the vestiges of his loyalist forces wrested control of his hometown of Surt, the interim government announced.

Al Jazeera television showed what it said was Colonel Qaddafi’s corpse as jubilant fighters in Surt fired automatic weapons in the air, punctuating an emphatic and violent ending to his four decades as a ruthless and bombastic autocrat who basked in his reputation as the self-styled king of kings of Africa.
 ::snipping2::
Mahmoud Shammam, the chief spokesman of the Transitional National Council, the interim government that replaced Colonel Qaddafi’s regime after he fled Tripoli in late August, confirmed that Colonel Qaddafi was killed, though he did not provide other details.

"A new Libya is born today," he said.  "This is the day of real liberation. We were serious about giving him a fair trial.  It seems God has some other wish."

Abdul Hakim Belhaj, the leader of the Tripoli military council, said on Al Jazeera that anti-Qaddafi forces had Colonel Qaddafi’s body.

It was not clear precisely how he died. Mohamed Benrasali, a member of the national council’s Tripoli Stabilization Committee, said fighters from Misurata who were deployed in Surt told him that Colonel Qaddafi was captured alive in a car leaving Surt.  He was badly injured, with wounds in his head and both legs, Mr. Benrasali said, and died soon after.
 ::snipping2::
Libya’s interim leaders had said they believed that some Qaddafi family members including the colonel himself and some of his sons had been hiding in Surt or in Bani Walid, another loyalist bastion that the anti-Qaddafi forces captured earlier this week.

There was no immediate comment on the news of his death from American officials. .

Victoria Nuland, the State Department spokeswoman, traveling with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Afghanistan, said the department was aware of the reports “on the capture or killing of Muammar Qaddafi.”

There was also no immediate comment from Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, the interim government’s top official. But he had said that the death or capture of Colonel Qaddafi would allow him to declare the country liberated and in control of its borders, and to start a process that would lead to a general election for a national council within eight months.

U.S. remains officially cautious on Gadhafi reports
October 20, 2011

Washington (CNN) -- U.S. officials were waiting and watching Thursday as reports emerged that former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi had been killed.

A senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told CNN the White House "has not confirmed the report yet" that the longtime U.S. foe was dead.

In Afghanistan, where she held talks Thursday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she had heard the reports but was unable to confirm them.

"Unconfirmed reports," Clinton said after getting first word, via a Blackberry handed to her by an aide, of Gadhafi's possible capture or death. When she first looked at the Blackberry, Clinton said "Wow," then reminded aides around her that previous reports of Gadhafi's capture had proved false.

Later, a State Department official familiar with the latest information from Libya said while no firm confirmation can be made, it "looks like" Gadhafi had been killed. The official spoke on condition of not being identified.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Sen. John McCain said the Arizona Republican is "confident" that Gadhafi is dead.

Gaddafi's Downfall: Families of Lockerbie Victims Express Relief
October 20, 2011

Families of the victims from the 1988 Lockerbie bombing have welcomed the news of Muammar Gaddafi's death, and say that justice has finally arrived for their loved ones and for the people of Libya.

As news broke that the former dictator had been killed in Sirte, the relatives of those killed on Pan Am flight 103 gave their reactions to various media outlets.

Frank Duggan, president of a group called Victims of Pan Am Flight 103, said that that people all over the world will be celebrating the death of a "monster." He told The Daily Beast, “It has not been confirmed, but I hope he is dead. May he rest in pieces."

NATO Unaware Qaddafi Was in Convoy at Time of Strike, Officials Say
October 21, 2011

NATO acknowledged Friday that its warplanes struck pro-Qaddafi military vehicles but were unaware that the ousted Libyan leader was in the convoy.

NATO's top commander, meanwhile, said he will recommend the end of the alliance's Libya mission.

NATO said that the 11 military vehicles targeted Thursday were among a heavily-armed convoy of 75 vehicles transporting Muammar Qaddafi away from Sirte "at high speed" at around 8:30 a.m. local time.

"At the time of the strike, NATO did not know that Qaddafi was in the convoy," the statement said. "NATO's intervention was conducted solely to reduce the threat towards the civilian population, as required to do under our UN mandate. As a matter of policy, NATO does not target individuals."

NATO officials added, "We later learned from open sources and Allied intelligence that Qaddafi was in the convoy and that the strike likely contributed to his capture."
 ::snipping2::
Qaddafi's burial has been delayed until his death can be further examined and a decision is made about where to inter the body, Libyan officials said Friday, as the U.N. human rights office called for an investigation into his death. The transitional leadership had said it would bury the dictator Friday in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam said Qaddafi's body was still in Misrata, where it was taken after he was found in his hometown of Sirte, and revolutionary forces were discussing where it should be interred.

Gadhafi's Autopsy Reveals He Was Shot In Head
Libya's New Leaders Set To Declare Country's Liberation Sunday

October 23, 2011

TRIPOLI, Libya (CNN) -- Doctors completed the autopsy of Moammar Gadhafi on Sunday, with the chief pathologist confirming the former Libyan leader died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Dr. Othman el-Zentani would not disclose additional findings, such as whether the findings revealed if Gadhafi suffered the wound in crossfire or at close-range.

Zentani said the report will now go to the attorney general's office before it is released to the public.

Doctors performed the autopsy at a Misrata hospital in the presence of officials from the prosecutor's office, Zentani said.

No foreign or independent officials were present, he said.

Autopsies were also conducted on the bodies of Gadhafi's son, Mutassim, and his former defense minister, Abu Baker Yunis.

The three bodies would likely return to a cold storage unit at a Misrata meat market for public viewing, Zentani said.

Gadhafi's family issued a statement Friday calling on the United Nations and Amnesty International to push Libya's new leadership "to hand over the bodies of the martyrs of their tribe so they can be buried according to Islamic rites," a pro-Gadhafi TV station reported.

Libyans Bury Gaddafi in Secret Location
October 25, 2011

MISRATA, Libya) — Longtime Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi, his son Muatassim and a top aide were buried in an Islamic ceremony at dawn Tuesday in a secret location, with a few relatives and officials in attendance, officials said.

The burial closed the book on Gaddafi's nearly 42-year rule and the 8-month civil war to oust him, but did not silence international calls for an investigation into whether the widely despised tyrant was executed by his captors.
 ::snipping2::
The bodies of Gaddafi, Muatassim and former Defense Minster Abu Bakr Younis were removed overnight from the commercial freezer in Misrata where they'd been on display for four days. They were then buried at dawn Tuesday, according to Ibrahim Beitalmal, a spokesman for the military council in Misrata. Bani also confirmed the burial.

In a text message, Beitalmal said Islamic prayers were read over the bodies and that relatives and members of the local and military councils of Misrata attended the funeral. Beitalmal could not immediately reached by phone Tuesday to provide further details.
On Monday, Beitalmal said the three would be buried in unmarked graves to prevent vandalism. Presumably, the location would also be kept hidden to prevent it from turning into a shrine for Gaddafi loyalists.

International organizations asking to see the burial site would be given access, Beitalmal said.

The three bodies had been held in cold storage in Misrata since the dictator and members of his entourage were captured near his hometown of Sirt on Thursday after their convoy came under attack by NATO. For days, Misratans had lined up to see the bodies, donning surgical masks to cover the stench from the bodies.

Over the weekend, Libya's chief pathologist, Dr. Othman el-Zentani, performed autopsies on the three bodies and also took DNA samples to confirm their identities. El-Zentani has said Gaddafi died from a shot to the head, and said the full report would be released later this week, after he presents his findings to the attorney general.

Gaddafi and Muatassim were captured alive, with some injuries, but died in unclear circumstances later that day.

Responding to mounting international pressure, Libya's interim leaders have promised an investigation to establish whether Gaddafi was killed in an execution-style slaying after being captured alive Thursday by fighters in his hometown of Sirt or whether he died in the crossfire as government officials have suggested. Video footage showed him being beaten and abused by a mob after his capture.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch said there are strong indications that Gaddafi was killed in custody.

NEW YORK -- The killing of Osama bin Laden during a raid by Navy SEALs on his hideout in Pakistan was the top news story of 2011, followed by Japan’s earthquake/tsunami/meltdown disaster, according to The Associated Press’ annual poll of U.S. editors and news directors. ::snipping2::

GADHAFI TOPPLED IN LIBYA:  After nearly 42 years of mercurial and often brutal rule, Moammar Gadhafi was toppled by his own people. Anti-government protests escalated into an eight-month rebellion, backed by NATO bombing, that shattered his regime, and Gadhafi finally was tracked down and killed in the fishing village where he was born.

Lockerbie anniversary marked amid Qaddafi death

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama's counterterrorism chief says the 270 people killed in the 1988 airplane bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, can rest more peacefully knowing that longtime Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi is dead.

John Brennan made the comments Wednesday at a memorial service marking the 23rd anniversary of the bombing. Qaddafi's regime eventually took responsibility for the attack. Many victims were American.

Gaddafi’s Ghost: How the Tyrant Haunts Libya a Year After His Death
One year after being cornered and killed by Libyan rebels, fallen dictator Muammar Gaddafi still casts a long shadow from the grave

October 19, 2012

The killing of Muammar Gaddafi exactly a year ago—on Oct. 20, 2011—ended the world’s longest dictatorship, and this week, Libya’s first freely elected government in decades appointed its new Prime Minister, Ali Zeidan. Zeidan should expect no easy ride: Libya’s feisty new media sites and television channels have spent the past year lambasting the new leaders for their poor performance—just the kind of criticisms that would have earned journalists years in prison under Gaddafi’s 42-year rule. For sure, Libya is violent and chaotic. But it is finally free.  “There is progress,” says Ali Tarhouni, one of the leaders of last year’s revolution, by phone from Tripoli. “After all, Gaddafi is dead. This ‘mad dog’ is gone.”

Yet while Gaddafi lies buried in a secret location in the desert, Libyans are grappling with his troublesome legacy, one year after his gruesome demise. Here are three issues still playing out in Libya’s new democracy:

Is one Gaddafi scion still in hiding?

Former Gadhafi spokesman captured in Libya
October 20, 2012

(CNN) -- The former spokesman for the late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has been captured outside Tripoli, an official said Saturday.
Moussa Ibrahim, who spoke on behalf of the government in last year's war that resulted in its ouster, was taken captive by Libyan special forces in Tarhouna, a town about 40 miles south of Tripoli, said Mohammed al-Sabbee, the spokesman for Libya's prime minister.
Ibrahim is being taken to Tripoli, al-Sabbee told CNN on Saturday.
 ::snipping2::
Ibrahim, who speaks excellent English, had often talked to journalists on Gadhafi's behalf. Last year, for example, he was pressed by CNN's Anderson Cooper to explain Gadhafi's assertion that young Libyans were being drugged with hallucinatory pills to attack the government.
