Prayer vigil held for Sam Houston State student who vanished
October 30, 2011

CONROE, Texas —The family of a missing Spring man held a prayer vigil at Oak Ridge High School on Saturday night.
TJ Murray disappeared ten days ago.
 ::snipping2::
On October 19, his son was out with friends and was last seen leaving a sports bar on Sawdust Road. The truck he was driving was left in the parking lot and his cell phone was found in a nearby ditch.

“He’s somewhere or someone has him but this isn’t like him,” says the man’s mom Janelle Murray.
 ::snipping2::
She says her son beat Leukemia after being diagnosed when he was only 5 years old. He survived a bad car accident and he’s a fighter.

“I’m just staying positive until we hear something,” says Janelle Murray.

The Murrays plan to organize their own search early next week.

Wow.  They've been through so much, the cancer, the car accident, this family needs some good news for a change.

Vigil for missing SHSU student brings hope, but still no leads
Posted October 29, 2011
Updated October 31, 2011

The Oak Ridge High School football field was aglow Saturday night with family, friends and supporters lighting candles, waving glow sticks and praying for TJ Murray's safe return home.

The 24-year-old ORHS grad and Sam Houston State University student went missing Oct. 19 after he was last in contact with his father Tom Murray, an ORHS teacher for 25 years, around 12:30 a.m. while at the On The Rox Sports Bar and Grill located at 592 Sawdust Road.

Murray told his father that he would not drive his truck while he was out drinking with friends, and later that morning Tom Murray found his truck still in the bar's parking lot.

TJ was nowhere to be found. His cell phone was later found in a ditch in the same area.
 ::snipping2::
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Equusearch began searching for TJ on Wednesday, concentrating their efforts – on foot, ATV and by helicopter – near Spring Creek at Interstate 45.

But after two days and no leads, Tom Murray said searchers would discuss the next move after more interviews and evidence was examined. He's hoping to hear word on Monday about the plans to find his son.

But even as a student with a busy schedule living in Huntsville and studying business and psychology at SHSU, TJ always managed to call or text his parents almost daily, Tom said.

"This is not like him," he said. "To just fall off the face of the Earth, it's way out of character."

Searched several areas today and didn't turn up anything, as of 5 o'clock there were no plans to resume tomorrow, said there weren't any more leads at this time. If another search is scheduled, it will be put on the Texas Equusearch website. Just thought I would pass that info along, I know people were wondering...

This is just sad.  Too bad that the bar didn't have security cameras in the parking lot.

Search Continues For Missing SHSU Student
Posted November 16, 2011, Updated November 17, 2011
Reporter: Rashi Vats

It's been one month since T.J. Murray, a Sam Houston State University student, went missing, and his disappearance has left more questions than answers.

While the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office says no physical searches are underway, the search is still very active.

"I touch it everyday before I go to work," said T.J.'s father, Tom Murray, while putting his hand on T.J.'s car.

T.J.'s car has been parked at his fathers house in Conroe for the past month. It's the amount of time that has passed since he went missing.

"It doesn't look good, but you got hope and you got prayer. That's what we are banking on. We just want him home," said Tom. "Last night I went to bed at quarter to 9 and woke up at 1 and couldn't go back to sleep. Just pacing, and where are you, and there should be something I should be doing and I am not doing it."

To take steps to help find T.J., his friends created a Facebook page to raise awareness. Over 4,000 people subscribe to the page and everyday someone comments.

Tj's dad believes someone may have hurt his son and running away is something he would never do.

"He has to talk to someone in our family---me, his mother, his little brother who is his best friend. Theres no way that he would do that to him or us. No way," said Tom.

There's a $5,000 reward the family is offering for anyone with information on T.J.

Mom of missing SHSU student holds out hope
November 22, 2011

“It was the first night of the World Series,” said Janelle Murray. “People were out. We just believe that people saw something.”

It was Oct. 19, T.J. Murray was bar-hopping with friends on Sawdust Road. The truck he was driving was left in the parking lot and his cell phone was found in a nearby ditch.

Janelle Murray said her son’s friends don’t seem to know what happened.

Texas EquuSearch stopped looking at the beginning of November, and officials with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said they have no leads.

But Murray’s mom said family and friends were asked to give DNA samples to authorities. Officials were also combing through phone records for clues.

“We don’t know what we’re looking for,” Janelle Murray said.

Janelle Murray, who is the mother of four boys, said she has to believe her oldest is OK. She said he was diagnosed with a rare type of Leukemia at the age of five and beat it.

Years later, T.J. Murray would barely survive a car crash.

“We have to believe, if he’s anywhere, he’s fighting or surviving,” his mother said.

The missing student will turn 24 on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

His family and friends plan to honor him that night at 6 p.m. at Papa’s Ice House on Pruitt Road in Spring.

Family of missing student ‘heartbroken’ without him
November 19, 2011

 ::snipping2::
It’s been a month since the father and son were in contact in the early morning of Oct. 19 when TJ called his father to inform him he would not drive his truck after an evening of drinks with friends. The next morning, Tom found his truck in the parking lot of the On The Rox bar on Sawdust Road.

While TJ’s cell phone was later found in a nearby ditch, all investigators have clear is that the 24-year-old had umpired at an Oak Ridge Woodlands Area Little League game on Oct. 18 before drinking with friends. An umpire with ORWALL and a student studying business and psychology at Sam Houston State University, TJ seemed to simply vanish after a friend returned from the restroom and he was nowhere in sight, Tom Murray said.

A “TJ Murray Fund” has been established at Woodforest National Bank so that donations can offer a reward for information leading to the discovery of TJ. So far $5,000 has been raised, with more later from Crime Stoppers if the status is changed from a missing person to a criminal case with the determination that a crime was committed, Murray said.
 ::snipping2::
Investigators with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Equusearch scoured near an area off Interstate 45 at Spring Creek and another area near Borough Park Drive near Sawdust Road in the days that followed the announcement that declared TJ a missing person on Oct. 26. Manpower, all-terrain vehicles, search dogs and a helicopter turned up nothing, not even on the next Friday when the day was open to family and friends, drawing in more than 100 community members desperate to find something.

But there was nothing.

Now the ground searches have ceased, Murray said, as investigators continue to assure him when they call him every Friday and Monday for an update that they are interviewing witnesses and anyone who saw or spoke with Murray in the days leading up to his disappearance.

“Right now the search is pretty much at a standstill,” he said. “The investigation part is still going on.”

Still hopeful to find a clue leading to a more concrete trail of what happened to his son, Murray said several psychics have contacted his family with locations to search, tips Murray said he follows because of the rare chance they could be correct.

“If someone throws something out there, we’re going to look into it,” he said. “We’re not going to rush to the police unless there’s something.”

With ties in Corpus Christi, where TJ attended school after graduating from ORHS and before moving to Huntsville in July to attend SHSU, Murray said there is a possibility that he could have gone there, though Corpus Christi police have been contacted and have few answers. And Murray now doubts that searches are likely to turn up anything in the area.

Regardless of the possibility that finding TJ now means he will not have survived, with Murray submitting a DNA sample to investigators Monday in case they find a body, he has not lost hope that his fighter of a son will return to him.

Holidays difficult for families with missing loved ones
November 24, 2011

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Two area families spent the holiday giving thanks and praying for answers as they search and hope for any clue of their missing loved ones. They mysteriously disappeared nearly two months ago, and this day just isn't the same without them.
 ::snipping2::
In a separate case, another family is struggling with the loss of their loved one. TJ Murray went missing from a Spring sports bar back in October. On Wednesday, the Murray family held a vigil for TJ's 24th birthday, and they spent the Thanksgiving holiday with still no word of his whereabouts.

You could see the pain in the eyes of TJ Murray's mother. Like so many who love him, she wants to see him come home.

TJ was born the day before Thanksgiving 24 years ago.

"Today was hard," said his mother Janelle Murray. "Today was hard."

Janelle's son has been missing now over a month.

She said, "I didn't want to get out of bed. I laid there and cried some more and I thought, 'OK, it's Thanksgiving."

She got out of bed because she thinks TJ is still alive.

"I do believe that. I have to believe that," Janelle said. "I'm not ready for the alternative."

TJ Murray was last seen leaving a Montgomery County sports bar on Sawdust Road during the early morning hours of October 19. There were no signs of foul play. But his cell phone was located in a ditch nearby. His father's truck was still parked where he left it.

In the weeks since, searchers have scoured the area for clues that might lead to Murray. So far, they've had no luck. Even sheriff's investigators have struggled to figure out what happened.

Janelle Murray says the hardest part is when she is alone with her thoughts and fears.

"Then it gets quiet and you think can you do this," she said.

Janelle just cleaned out TJ's apartment at Sam Houston State University, finding his cherished Sunshine Kids pin that he received after beating leukemia at age five. She wears that now -- a symbol of his strength, giving her hope that one day she will know what happened to her son.

"We just plead, plead with anyone that has any information," Janelle said.
