Lady Liberty marks 125 years with naturalization ceremony, tributes
October 28, 2011

Today marks the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, the beacon of hope for millions of immigrants who have arrived at Ellis Island to begin new lives in America.
The ceremony began at 8:45 a.m. this morning at Liberty Island, in New York, with a naturalization ceremony for 125 people, hailing from over 40 countries.

Before dawn on a clear, wintry New York day, the naturalization candidates, many bearing small American flags, gathered at Battery Park to take a ferry across the harbor.

According to the National Park Service, which is co-hosting the ceremony, the day's events are intended to reflect the events of Oct. 28, 1886, when the statue was first dedicated.

Packed tightly into a small ferry, cruising across the bright choppy waters past Ellis Island, a few passengers remarked on the historical resonance.

Present at the naturalization ceremony was a New Jersey celebrity, Buddy Valastro, of TLC's "Cake Boss," from Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken. His brother-in-law is getting naturalized.

"The Statue of Liberty really stands for the American Dream," Valastro said.

The naturalization ceremony will be followed by tributes from the FDNY and Coast Guard, an address by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, readings, music, and the “lighting” of a webcam in Lady Liberty’s torch.

Coming soon - LIVE images from the torch!!

The Statue of Liberty is officially known as, "Liberty Enlightening the World." But to many she is "Lady Liberty," "The Lady" or even just "the Statue."  On her 125th  anniversary, Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, she will be known by a new name, "Liberty Enlightening the World Wide Web " thanks to a series of new web cams placed around her torch.

Several remarkable views will be just a touch of a mouse away. On clear days, three cameras will provide unobstructed panoramas and live views of the famed New York City skyline, along with a front row seat to watch views of the majestic Hudson River and ships in New York Harbor. And that's just looking out.  The two remaining cameras provide truly unique views. One provides a ultra wide-angle interactive view of the famed golden torch; and the final camera looks downward.

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. (SOLEIF), the official partner of the park, worked with EarthCam to make these internationally accessible views a reality.

These cameras give visitors unmatched views from the Statue of Liberty torch, a location that has been closed to the public since 1916.

Statue of Liberty accessorized: Live web cams offer new harbor views

Statue of Liberty: A makeover of Lady Liberty will come with five webcams attached to the torch. The web cams go live Friday during ceremonies marking the Statue of Liberty's 125th anniversary.

October 28, 2011

he Statue of Liberty is getting accessories -- with five webcams attached to the torch held high in New York harbor offering views not seen by the public in nearly a century.
The webcams go live on Friday during a ceremony on Liberty Island marking the 125th anniversary of the dedication of the copper-clad monument, which was a gift from France to the people of America.

From computers afar, viewers will be able to watch live video streams of traffic, boats and airplanes in high-resolution panoramic images showing the Manhattan skyline, the city's borough of Brooklyn and neighboring New Jersey.

Officials closed the torch to the public in 1916 during World War One, following an explosion at a nearby munitions depot, blamed on German saboteurs, that damaged the statue.

Since then, the sweeping views have been seen only by a handful of people involved in the statue's maintenance.

"It's a heck of a climb," said Briganti, who last made the difficult ascent in the statue's right arm in the 1980s.

The cameras are housed inside steel containers slightly smaller than shoe boxes, he said.

One points directly straight down, offering an unusual view of the statue's crown and anyone milling around the statue's base some 300 feet below.

"I call that the 'Hi Mom!' view," Briganti said, suggesting that visitors to the statue might arrange to wave to friends and family at home.

Two other webcams are being set up in Brooklyn, pointing at the statue.

EarthCam, a New Jersey-based webcam technology company, donated the cameras.

Internet users will be able to access the streams from EarthCam's website and the National Park Service's Statue of Liberty website.

At the Statue of Liberty, the party's over, and the work begins
October 29, 2011

The Statue of Liberty hosted a 125th anniversary celebration Friday and then decided to take off the rest of this year and part of the next.

Being a hostess, of course, can be a lot of work, but in this case, it's a lot of work that's being done to the hostess that will keep her closed for about a year.

Now the party is over, although the National Park Service emphasizes that Liberty Island will remain open during the $27.25-million renovation.

About 3.5 million people visit Liberty Island in a year, but only about only 2,500 tickets a day have been available for the inside tour of Lady Liberty, which means about two-thirds of the visitors don't go inside. Because the work is inside, the view of the statute will be largely unobstructed, the park service says.

Among the improvements to the lady are new elevators and stairways and rehabbed restrooms. Visitors will still be able to take the ferry to the island.
