A thread to discuss the latest earthquakes.

Turkey Quake Kills More Than 200

Poor Eastern Turkey.  23 earthquakes in just 13 hours.  A massive 7.2 followed by a deluge of huge aftershocks.  Not the normal 2 or 3 magnitude ones, but 4, 5 & 6 ones!  Their nerves must be shot.  The children must be frightened out of their minds.

7.2 - 10:41
5.6 - 10:56
4.9 - 11:10
5.6 - 11:32
4.6 - 12:03
4.4 - 12:42
4.5 - 12:56
4.2 - 13:06
4.4 - 13:17
4.0 - 14:52
4.8 - 15:24
4.6 - 15:58
4.6 - 16:05
4.2 - 16:38
5.1 - 18:10
4.6 - 18:27
4.9 - 18:53
4.8 - 19:06
4.5 - 19:43
4.5 - 19:48
6.0 - 20:45
4.8 - 22:21
4.3 - 23.34

Any earthquake over magnitude 4 is pretty scary.  Quakes larger than 5 are violent and extremely frightening.  Usually you'll have an large earthquake followed by some mild aftershocks, so seeing the size and amount of the ones in Turkey is just mind blowing.  In 1997 we had a huge 6.7 followed by a 5.6 about 12 hours later.  I was so traumatized that I slept on my living room floor in a sleeping bag, near the front door, for 10 months.  I can't imagine living through what Turkey has experienced.  Those poor people, having to endure all those quakes in near-freezing weather.  Unbelievably sad.

Death toll from Turkey earthquake nears 600
October 30, 2011

The death toll from Turkey’s powerful earthquake was nearing 600 on Sunday as hopes faded of finding any more survivors in the rubble.

At least 596 people were killed and more than 4,150 injured in the magnitude 7.2 quake that rocked Turkey’s eastern Van province, near the Iranian border, a week ago, Turkish authorities said.
