College Student's Disappearance Baffles Cops

http://abcnews.go.com/US/college-students-disappearance-baffles-cops/story?id=23839303

Quote
Brogan Dulle, who attends the University of Cincinnati, vanished Sunday after reportedly leaving his apartment to go look for his cell phone.

Police say he headed out around 3 a.m., leaving his keys, wallet and jacket behind. They believe surveillance video released Thursday shows Dulle retracing his steps, using a flashlight to try and find the phone. Dulle hasn’t been seen since and officials say they have no idea what happened to him.

Cincinnati Police Lt. Col. James Whalen said the department has exhausted every lead in the disappearance.

“We have no evidence of foul play at this point,” Whalen said. “It’s unusual that we don’t get a phone call. Somebody saw something.”

WATCH VIDIO

Quote
Cincinnati police said they have video that shows a missing man shortly after he left his apartment.

Assistant Chief James Whalen said a man investigators believe is Brogan Dulle, 21, was seen on video near his apartment around 2 a.m. Sunday apparently searching
for his cellphone in the street. He was carrying a light of some sort to help see better, Whalen said.

Whalen said a resident turned the video over to police Wednesday night after hearing about Dulle.

The video shows Dulle and two friends pushing a grocery cart up the street to their McMillan Street building earlier in the night, Whelan said.

The friends get in a car to go to Taco Bell, while Dulle pushes the cart inside, Whelan said. Some time later Dulle reappears in the video searching for the phone

On foot and online, the search for Brogan Dulle continues
May 24, 2014

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Searchers continue to look for Brogan Dulle, the UC student who has been missing a week, and an equally massive effort is taking place on the Internet.

With thousands of people flocking to downtown this weekend for Reds games and the Taste of Cincinnati, volunteers saturated the streets with posters, handouts and information booths. But there's one thing their incredible on-foot efforts can't do: get the message out nationwide.

That's just what social media has done, with people across the country flooding the "Help Find Brogan Dulle" Facebook page with well wishes, prayers and offers of help.

"I really have a hard time wrapping my mind around the magnitude of this page," said Joanna Loschen Hass, a cousin of Dulle's.  Within the first 36 hours of the creation of "Help Find Brogan Dulle" Facebook page, it had more than 10,000 members. It's currently reached upwards of 20,000 Facebook users.

The case has also traveled on Reddit and twitter, using #FindBroganDulle.

Friends and family members of the UC sophomore handed out fliers at a booth at the Taste of Cincinnati Saturday afternoon.

“We always hope, try to stay positive,” volunteer Janelle Maxwell said. “It’s just getting harder and harder as the days go, because there’s nothing, no leads, no nothing.”

They said they plan on being at the food festival all weekend in hopes of getting new tips about Dulle’s whereabouts.

“It’s possible he could be out here or someone here could have seen him, so this is a really, really important spot to be to just get the word out,” volunteer Darla Maxwell said.

Cincinnati Police said they found Brogan Dulle’s body in Mount Auburn in a building near where he went missing.

The Hamilton County Coroner was called to a building at 173 East McMillan Street at about 10:30 p.m. Monday.
Police said Dulle’s body was found in a vacant part of a building next door to where he lived.

Watch this story

Officers said the owner of the building reported something suspicious at about 9 p.m.

Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell said there was no indication of suspicious activity.

The death is believed to have been self-inflicted.

Sad ending to this case. From the descriptions of the disappearance I did not think that this case would be one of a self inflicted wound. How this went from Brogan going out to look for a missing cell phone to this is puzzling and sad.

Rest in Peace Brogan Dulle

I swear, watching the video of him searching for his phone and then a self-inflicted death -- somehow it is not matching in my brain.
Prayers and positive energy for his family and friends.

Hmm ... I didn't see this coming in this case.

Missing University of Cincinnati sophomore found hanged in building basement:

Brogan Dulle, 21, went missing early May 18 after a night out at a pizza bar near the Ohio campus. He was found hanged Monday evening in the basement of the building next door to his apartment complex, and a coroner said the young man had been dead since he was first reported missing.

The landlord of the medical supplies building next door found a male intruder in the building’s basement, she told police in an emergency call, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

The crowbar used to smash the glass and a bottle of wine was found nearby. He left no note, according to the Enquirer.

Hanging? Where did he get the rope? So this was planned all along? Bizarre and very sad.

All that searching and Brogan Dulle was right next door

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/crime/2014/05/25/brogan-dulle/9576143/

Quote
"It's an investigation that's raised a lot of questions and we still have a lot of questions we may never know the answers to," Bailey said. "In my 27 years it's just one of those that you don't see all the time. The motives are unclear."

But one aspect of the case is certain: Dulle committed suicide.

Hamilton County Coroner Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco ruled Dulle's official cause of death as asphyxiation by hanging. His body had likely been in the basement since he went missing, she said.

"I am so, so sorry it ended this way," she said. "I cannot imagine a worse nightmare for his parents."

Beyond that, many of the exact circumstances surrounding Dulle's death remain a mystery.

Police believe Dulle climbed the fire escape of a building at 173 E. McMillan Avenue. The fire escape was about 9 feet off the ground, but police think Dulle's stature and athleticism -- he was 6-foot-1 and an active swim coach -- would have allowed him to climb the escape.

They found a crowbar in the building they think he used to break a third story window, Bailey said. He then made his way to the basement and hung himself, Bailey said.

Police said no note was found. A bottle of wine was found by Dulle's body.

"We don't know if maybe this was planned weeks in advance. We just don't know that," Bailey said. "We believe he was by himself."
