Penn State Football: Millen, Meade Grapple With Paterno’s Role
By Ron Musselman
July 12, 2012

Two former Penn State football players who went on to play in the NFL came to the defense of their former college coach, Joe Paterno, on Thursday.

But Mike Meade, a Nittany Lion fullback who went on to play five years in the NFL, called the finding of the Freeh report “troubling.”

Meade said he still was “struggling to come to grips with it.”

Meade and former Penn State All-American defensive tackle Matt Millen, now a TV analyst for ESPN, were among 430 people interviewed by the Freeh task force.

Former FBI director Louis Freeh said president Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley, retired vice president Gary Schultz and Paterno were all to blame for not stopping the raping of children by former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky as far back as 1998.

Corbett again defends Sandusky investigation, says two agents were assigned
By Brad Bumsted
July 12, 2012

HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett, the former attorney general who launched the Jerry Sandusky investigation, said it’s “absolutely false” that he only assigned one investigator to the case while most resources were tied up in public corruption investigations.

At a news conference Thursday after the release of former FBI Director Louis Freeh’s report, Corbett defended the criminal investigation for taking “a monster off the street.”

When asked, he also disputed the claim about one investigator frequently reported by the media since Sandusky’s arrest in November. A jury last month convicted Sandusky, 68, the former Penn State football defensive coordinator, of 45 charges of molesting 10 young boys over 15 years.

Corbett, a Republican from Shaler, said two Bureau of Narcotics agents who also used to be police officers were assigned to the case: Anthony Sassano and Randy Feathers.

Feathers did not return a call. Sassano could not be reached.

Sandusky attorney files appeal notice of judge's order
By Paula Reed Ward
July 12, 2012

An attorney for former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky this afternoon filed a notice of appeal, complaining that the judge on his child sex abuse trial issued a protective order that required counsel to divulge confidential work product.

Karl Rominger wrote that McKean County Senior Judge John M. Cleland ordered defense counsel to reveal with whom they shared discovery materials, which a filing described as akin to forcing the defense to reveal case strategies.

"The net effect of the court's order is to invade the province of attorney work product," Mr. Rominger wrote.

In addition, he wrote that the court lacked the authority to retroactively impose such an order.

Mr. Rominger also complains that the order is in error because it is not reciprocal upon the attorney general's office, as well.

AP: Freeh report shows PSU officials hushed up child sex abuse allegations
July 12, 2012

By GENARO C. ARMAS,Associated Press, GEOFF MULVIHILL,Associated Press, MARK SCOLFORO,Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- Joe Paterno and other top Penn State officials hushed up child sex abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky more than a decade ago for fear of bad publicity, allowing the former assistant football coach to prey on other youngsters, according to a scathing report issued Thursday on the scandal.

"Our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disregard for the safety and welfare of Sandusky's child victims by the most senior leaders at Penn State," said former FBI Director Louis Freeh, who was hired by university trustees to look into what has become one of sports' biggest scandals. "The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized."

After an eight-month investigation, Freeh's firm produced a 267-page report that concluded that the Hall of Fame coach, President Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz "repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse."

Paterno "was an integral part of this active decision to conceal" and his firing was justified, Freeh said at a news conference. He called the officials' disregard for child victims "callous and shocking."

Sandusky is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of 45 criminal counts for abusing 10 boys. The scandal led to the ouster of Paterno and Spanier. Curley and Schultz are awaiting trial on charges accusing them of lying to a grand jury and failing to report abuse. They have pleaded not guilty.

Asked whether the officials' actions amounted to a crime such as conspiracy or obstruction, Freeh said that would be up to a grand jury.
School leaders "empowered Sandusky to attract potential victims to the campus and football events by allowing him to have continued, unrestricted and unsupervised access" to campus and to affiliate with the football program, the report said. The access, the report states, "provided Sandusky with the very currency that enabled him to attract his victims."

Freeh said officials had opportunities in 1998 and 2001 to step in.

Freeh report: Paterno, others at PSU concealed information; Paterno knew about 1998 incident
Juy 12, 2012

The Mirror will have updates throughout the day on the Freeh report that was commissioned to investigate the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The report can be read at TheFreehReportOnPSU.com.

10:57 a.m.

Louis Freeh's news conference has ended. Many of the questions centered around Joe Paterno, and there were others about the football culture at the university.

10:52 a.m.

Freeh was asked if Joe Paterno was powerful enough to make sure Sandusky would be investigated.

"Many, many witnesses we spoke to described Mr. Paterno as one of the most powerful leaders on the campus," Freeh said. "He ran his football building, he clearly ran the Lasch Building. I think it's a very strong and reasonable inference that he could have done so if he wished."

Freeh later was asked if there were more people, other than Spanier, Curley, Schultz and Paterno, who helped conceal information about Sandusky.

"No," he replied.

Joe Paterno, at the end, showed more interest in his legacy than Sandusky’s victims
Sally Jenkins - Columnist
July 12, 2012

Joe Paterno was a liar, there’s no doubt about that now. He was also a cover-up artist. If the Freeh Report is correct in its summary of the Penn State child molestation scandal, the public Paterno of the last few years was a work of fiction. In his place is a hubristic, indictable hypocrite.

In the last interview before his death, Paterno insisted as strenuously as a dying man could that he had absolutely no knowledge of a 1998 police inquiry into child molestation accusations against his assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. This has always been the critical point in assessing whether Paterno and other Penn State leaders enabled Sandusky’s crimes.
If Paterno knew about ’98, then he wasn’t some aging granddad who was deceived, but a canny and unfeeling power broker who put protecting his reputation ahead of protecting children.

If he knew about ’98, then he understood the import of graduate assistant Mike McQueary’s distraught account in 2001 that he witnessed Sandusky assaulting a boy in the Penn State showers.

If he knew about ’98, then he also perjured himself before a grand jury.

Guilty.

TVs at PSU student center suddenly switched to public access
By Melissa Dribben
Inquirer Staff Writer
July 12, 2012

The handful of students and alumni that gathered in Penn State's student center this morning to watch the release of the Freeh report live were stunned when the channel suddenly switched.

While most of campus was still sleepy, the small group was viewing CNN on a large screen, or one of several smaller screens nearby, in anticipation of the 9 a.m. release of the report on the sex abuse scandal that has gripped the school.

Most were hoping that the report, part of a seven-month probe by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, would exonerate legendary football coach Joe Paterno.

But, just as an anchor was ready to speak about the report, the television screens suddenly went blank. They then turned to a public access channel featuring a reporter from The Morning Call newspaper in Allentown about the state budget.

Everyone watching suddenly went scrambling to find a way to switch the channel back at the student center, known as the HUB-Robeson Center Facility, or simply, "the Hub."
