Penn State Library To Keep Paterno Name
By Meredith Schwartz
July 25, 2012

While he announced that a statue to Coach Paterno would be removed from Beaver Stadium in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal, Penn State President Rodney Erickson stated that he “feels strongly” that the school’s library should remain named after Paterno.
“The Paterno Library symbolizes the substantial and lasting contributions to the academic life and educational excellence that the Paterno family has made to Penn State University. The library remains a tribute to Joe and Sue Paterno’s commitment to Penn State’s student body and academic success, and it highlights the positive impacts Coach Paterno had on the University,” Erickson said in a statement.
Paterno had called for a great library for Penn State as early as 1983, and ten years later, he and his wife began a campaign which raised $13.75 million for the construction of a new library, including $250,000 which the Paternos donated personally. In total the Paternos have donated $4 million to the Penn State libraries, according to The McClatchy newspapers, including another $50,000 to the library in 2011, after he was fired.

Penn State Board of Trustees to meet this afternoon regarding President Rodney Erickson's handling of NCAA sanctions
July 25, 2012

The Penn State Board of Trustees will meet this afternoon to discuss President Rodney Erickson's accepting NCAA sanctions against the football team without hearings or approval from the board, a source said.

Some board members say Erickson broke Standing Order IV under "Matters Requiring the approval of the Board of Trustees."

All this football stuff is like a diversion or smoke screen.  What's up with that?  I'm not going to follow where players are going/not going and etc.  But am interested in what's going on with the BOT and Erickson.

Does anyone remember victims?  It looks like the really big issue at this point is football.  Business as usual.     What about continuing to investigate.  There's more.  Much, much more to this.  JMHO

Hmm.  Wondering if something just might shake out of this meeting.  We still have Curley and Schultz trials coming up in a few weeks.  Spanier not charged with anything.  Corbett still governor.  No word in regard to The Second Mile investigations.  I wonder if that's where the big money, influence, big names etc. were involved.  Guess there won't be a Second Mile investigation because something is probably there.  Instead, going after football.  Last week it was the statue, this week it's the football program.  What about all the rest?

@Jenny_Boom21 @douglasjtaylor Great Q. Need to look at NCAA membership agreement, but dont think there's clause saying members cant sue NCAA

27m Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@ChrisWeigl @rmusselmansc Might depend on whether NCAA has reached settlements with other schools and whether President signature was enough

29m Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@douglasjtaylor But if I'm PSU & I believe the sanction is unwarranted or excessive, may be game worth playing. They lose in PR either way.

31m Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@brewonsouthu That would be the next step - get a TRO. And then all Hell breaks loose.

32m Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
Bingo. If Board invalidates decree that's exactly what they say RT @JeffThomas0409 shouldn't NCAA have known Erickson needed consent of BOT?

34m Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@OSGNelson Yes - NCAA can use whatever evidence it wants. It need not offer due process (per Tarkanian decision) or follow rules of evidence

36m Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@douglasjtaylor You might be right, bu then again, if PSU gets out of consent decree & sues the NCAA, it might regain negotiation leverage.

37m Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@makarov__ Consent decree here only is admission of violating NCAA rules, not any law, but still "legal" since prevents #PSU from suing NCAA

46m Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
If #PSU Board invalidates consent decree, #NCAA can try to save it by arguing Erickson had "apparent authority by virtue of his position."

1h Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@coloradojimw There has to be presentencing report compiled, it basically reviews what he did and recommends sentence; takes several months.

1h Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@McMan555 I think so. I think there are federal due process questions that give the US Supreme Court (and other fed courts) a stake in it.

1h Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@MichaelSalfino Duke Case is a great illustration of questionable believability of eyewitnesses, will have to check out your article.

1h Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@RalphCindrich I know where you're coming from and this could embarrass both Erickson and Emmert.

1h Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@RichAJensen Hard to get pulse on how what majority of trustees think, but seems like decent number of them want to fight consent decree.

1h Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
@TeamBBN That would be NCAA's argument -- he had legitimate reason to believe he had authority. Often that argument works to save contract.

1h Michael McCann ‏@McCannSportsLaw
Wow: #PSU President Erickson may have lacked legal authority to sign consent decree with #NCAA w/o #PSU Board approval.

It's becoming impossible to tell up from down in this case.  Seems it would be easier to get rid of all BoT, University admins and politicians to start from scratch.  Find one politician in the state with no direct ties to PS to choose 1 governor from any other state who will form a committee and start the rebuilding process.  Better yet, forget the governor, put in a successful CEO who would be given full authority to shape things up starting with the BoT.  The new BoT could then start the process of installing a new, proper administration.  Pipe dreams, nothing is going to change.  Heck, a year from now I fully expect to read that Mrs. Paterno and Mrs. Sandusky are "employed" by PS in some fashion and receiving exorbitant salaries and allowed full access to all facilities.

MuffyBee, thank you for keeping us so thoroughly updated!

ITA with everything you're posting.  It just really disappoints that the general populous of Penn State are still so defensive of football.  What shallow thinking.
