Penn State officials to court in alleged perjury over abuse
November 28, 2011

The Penn State University child sex abuse scandal moves to a courtroom next week and attorneys for the two university administrators charged with perjury already are taking aim at the credibility of the state's star witness against them.

Lawyers for former athletic director Tim Curley and former senior vice president Gary Schultz are focusing on Michael McQueary's recent statements that appear to contradict grand jury testimony about a 2002 incident in which McQueary allegedly saw Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky rape a 10-year-old boy.

Curley and Schultz are scheduled to appear at a Dec. 6 preliminary hearing to determine if the case should proceed to trial.

Penn State president reassures applicants
In light of scandal, letter says students have shown that the 'community is compassionate and strong'

By Bill Schackner, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
November 30, 2011

Penn State University President Rodney Erickson has reached out to tens of thousands of prospective students whose interest may have been dampened by child sex abuse allegations that have roiled campus.

Without directly mentioning the Nov. 5 arrest of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky and the dismissal of former head football coach Joe Paterno and resignation of President Graham Spanier, Mr. Erickson in a series of letters alluded to the challenges of recent days but said the university remains strong

New accuser files sex abuse lawsuit against Sandusky
November 30, 2011

A civil lawsuit filed today against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky accuses him of sexually abusing a boy more than 100 times over a four-year span.

The suit, filed in Philadelphia County Common Pleas Court, identifies the victim only as "John Doe A." It also names as defendants the university and The Second Mile, the nonprofit organization founded by Mr. Sandusky to work with children.

The suit said the boy was 10 when he met Mr. Sandusky in 1992 as a participant in The Second Mile's programs. It said Mr. Sandusky abused him "on multiple occasions and at multiple locations within Pennsylvania and outside of Pennsylvania; in the facilities of Penn State, particularly the football coach's locker room; at times within Philadelphia County; at facilities out of state connected with a Penn State bowl game; and at the Sandusky home."

It said Mr. Sandusky threatened the boy and threatened to harm his family if he told anyone about the abuse.
 ::snipping2::
In a statement separate from the lawsuit, "John Doe A," now a 29-year-old State College resident, said he never told anyone of the alleged abuse until hearing news accounts of the charges.

"I am hurting and have been for a long time because of what happened but feel now even more tormented that I have learned ... so many other kids were abused after me. Now that I have told and done something about it I am feeling better and going to get help and work with the police," the statement said. "I want other people who have been hurt to know they can come forward and get help and help protect others in the future."

It was the first in what is expected to become a series of civil suits against Penn State, Mr. Sandusky and The Second Mile.

In a statement today, The Second Mile said: "We will review the lawsuit and respond appropriately when we have done so. The Second Mile will adhere to its legal responsibilities throughout this process. As always, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."

Mr. Sandusky's attorney and officials at Penn State did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The suit asserts that Penn State and the Second Mile knew or should have known about Mr. Sandusky's purported history of sexual abuse and failed to notify parents or do anything to stop him. Attorney Jeffrey R. Anderson has asked a court to award his client unspecified damages in excess of $50,000.

"Our goal today is to bring this forth, put some light on it and also put some heat on it," Mr. Anderson said at a news conference.
 ::snipping2::
Legal experts have predicted that both the university and The Second Mile could face dozens of suits as the scandal continues to unfold.

Mr. Anderson and co-counsel Marci Hamilton have a long history of trying civil sexual abuse lawsuits against the Catholic Church. They are currently involved in more than a half-dozen suits against the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

New Accuser Alleges Sandusky Sexually Abused Him More Than 100 Times
November 30, 2011

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky sexually abused a young boy more than 100 times after meeting him through The Second Mile charity he founded in 1977, according to a civil lawsuit filed Wednesday.

The 27-page lawsuit, which was filed in Philadelphia, identifies the alleged victim -- now 29 -- as John Doe. It lists Sandusky, The Second Mile and Penn State as defendants, claiming Sandusky abused the boy at his State College home, at Penn State facilities and on at least one bowl game trip.

In a statement provided by his attorneys, the unidentified 29-year-old man said he filed the lawsuit because he did not want "other kids to be hurt and abused" by Sandusky.
 ::snipping2::
The alleged abuse occurred after Sandusky met the then-10-year-old boy through his charity in 1992 and continued until 1996, according to the lawsuit. Attorney Jeffrey Anderson said Sandusky threatened the boy's family to keep quiet about the encounters.

"Sandusky made a threat to him that nobody would believe him and made a threat to his family," Anderson said.

"The sexual abuse occurred on multiple occasions and at multiple locations within Pennsylvania and outside of Pennsylvania; in the facilities of Penn State, particularly the football coach's locker room," the lawsuit reads. "His molestation was enabled by the negligent oversight of Sandusky by Second Mile and Penn State."
Sandusky allegedly abused eight boys throughout a 15-year period. This latest alleged victim is not among those identified in a grand jury report released this month.
 ::snipping2::
Anderson said Sandusky, who remains free on bail, "belongs behind bars" today.

"Sandusky is out there free on bail or low on bail and walking the streets knowing what we know, he is out there," he said. "Imagine how the survivors are feeling,"
 ::snipping2::
Nils Frederiksen, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania attorney general, declined comment on the new accusations to FoxNews.com due to the "ongoing nature" of the grand jury investigation.

Accuser says Jerry Sandusky abused him more than 100 times
November 30, 2011

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky sexually abused a boy more than 100 times, and threatened to harm his family to keep him quiet, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by a new accuser who is not part of the criminal case.

The 29-year-old, identified only as John Doe, had never told anyone about the alleged abuse until Sandusky was charged this month with abusing other boys. He filed a complaint with law enforcement on Tuesday, and a day later became the first plaintiff to file suit in the Penn State child sex-abuse scandal.

The lawsuit claims Sandusky abused the boy from 1992, when the boy was 10, until 1996 in encounters at the coach's State College home, in a Penn State locker room and on trips, including to a bowl game. The account echoes a grand jury's description of trips, gifts and attention lavished on other alleged victims.
 ::snipping2::
The lawsuit names Sandusky, the university and The Second Mile charity as defendants. The man says he knew the coach through the charity, which Sandusky founded in 1977, ostensibly to help disadvantaged children in central Pennsylvania.

The man was not referenced in the grand jury report that charges Sandusky with abusing eight boys over a 15-year period.

His lawyer, Jeff Anderson, said he believes Sandusky was a predator who could not control his sexual impulses toward children. He harshly criticized officials at Penn State and The Second Mile who failed to report their suspicions and put a stop to any abuse.

"We need to address the institutional recklessness and failures," said Anderson, who specializes in clergy sex-abuse lawsuits. "Was it because of power, money, fear, loyalty, lack of education?"
 ::snipping2::
The university said it had not yet seen the complaint.

The charity said it would respond after reviewing the lawsuit, but added: "The Second Mile will adhere to its legal responsibilities throughout this process. As always, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."

The man who filed the lawsuit said Sandusky gave him gifts, travel and privileges after meeting him through his charity in 1992. The abuse began shortly afterward, the suit said.

Anderson suggested that it ended four years later because Sandusky was not sexually interested in older teens.
 ::snipping2::
Anderson described Penn State and the charity as entwined institutions, and charged that both failed to ensure that children were safe when they took part in trips and activities.

The lawsuit seeks a minimum $400,000 in damages for sexual abuse, negligence, emotional distress and other claims. The accuser long thought he was the only victim and was mired in guilt and self-loathing, the lawyer said.

By Anderson's count, the grand jury report lists 17 adults made aware of complaints or suspicions about the coach over the years, including those who knew of a 1998 complaint that Sandusky had showered with a Second Mile boy. Police pursued that mother's complaint, and compiled more than 100 pages of investigatory notes, but no charges were filed.

Penn State Pledges $1.5 Million for Sex-Crimes Groups
December 1, 2011

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State University officials have vowed to increase transparency and ethical standards and plan to donate $1.5 million in bowl proceeds to a pair of sex-crime advocacy organizations in the wake of shocking sex-abuse allegations levied against the school's once-revered assistant football coach.

University President Rod Erickson promised the donation Thursday morning, a day after he and other administrators faced pointed questions at a student-organized town hall forum.

Erickson told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday that the Big Ten bowl revenue, which usually goes back to the athletic department, will go to the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

"This presents an excellent opportunity for Penn State to raise the national visibility of this issue," Erickson said. "Our students and fans are focused on a cause to play for, to cheer for."
 ::snipping2::
In State College, administrators sought to reassure students worried about the unintended ramifications of the scandal, such as the reputation of a Penn State degree.

After several questioners mentioned they felt shamed by the scandal, vice president Henry Foley, as part of an answer about the school's top three priorities, told students to focus on academics and to "recognize that none of you are guilty. ... You may feel shame, but none of you are guilty. Just keep doing what you came here to do."

An overflow crowd watched the forum in another auditorium at the student union, while students at Penn State branch campuses could also email questions.
 ::snipping2::
The scandal has resulted in the departures of Paterno and university President Graham Spanier. Athletic Director Tim Curley has been placed on administrative leave, and Vice President Gary Schultz, who was in charge of the university's police department, has stepped down.

Schultz and Curley are charged with lying to the grand jury and failure to report to police. Sandusky is charged with child sex abuse. All maintain their innocence.

Erickson told reporters after the forum that Spanier was currently on sabbatical, and that as a tenured faculty member would have the right to teach if he so desired.

Several students also asked about the treatment of Paterno, who was the only school leader fired in the scandal's aftermath. Erickson said afterward he could not offer a detailed answer because it was the trustees' decision.

He reiterated there was no truth to Internet-fueled rumors that Paterno's statue outside Beaver Stadium would be removed, or that the Paterno name would be removed from the campus library to which the Paterno family had donated millions to help build.

"At some appropriate time down the road, I'm sure there will be an opportunity to also reflect on the many years of service Joe and (wife Sue Paterno) provided the university and the many good things that they've done for Penn State," Erickson said, eliciting brief applause.

Lawyer: Jerry Sandusky won't plead guilty
December 1, 2011

(CBS/AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Jerry Sandusky's lawyer says he hasn't discussed pleading guilty with his client and that the former Penn State assistant football coach still maintains he's innocent of the charges against him.

Joe Amendola said Thursday that he'd consider "possible alternatives" with Sandusky if new charges are filed that involve more victims than the eight boys covered by the 40 pending criminal counts.

Amendola says Sandusky has never considered a plea in his case.

The 67-year-old former Penn State assistant coach is awaiting a preliminary hearing on the charges.

Amendola says the topic of a guilty plea came up as a "what-if" question about potential additional charges in a recent interview and that if more charges are filed he would only then discuss the possibility of a plea.

Sandusky charity settles with alleged sex abuse victim
December 1, 2011

The Second Mile, the charity run by beleaguered Penn State University former football coach Jerry Sandusky, has settled a lawsuit with one of Sandusky's alleged sexual abuse victims, Bloomberg is reporting
Lawyer Ben Andreozzi, who represents an alleged victim identified as John Doe #4, told the news organization that The Second Mile agreed to obtain court approval before transferring assets or closing down. The alleged victim was seeking to freeze the charity's assets.

"Our goal in filing this lawsuit was to protect the interests of our clients and other victims," Andreozzi told Bloomberg news. "We intend to initiate a civil lawsuit seeking damages from the organizations and individuals responsible for sexual assaults upon our clients."

Andreozzi and one other lawyer, Jeffrey Fritz, told The Associated Press that the lawsuit protects the rights of John Doe #4 to the charity's assets but lets the operations continue.

Alleged victim's dinner with Jerry Sandusky was OK'd by police, attorney says
December 2, 2011

The attorney for Victim Six -- the now-24-year-old who reported indecent contact with Jerry Sandusky in 1998 when no charges were filed -- says police knew beforehand that he was invited to dine with Sandusky and his wife last summer and reported the experience back to authorities.

Howard A. Janet, the attorney recently hired to represent Victim Six and his family, issued a statement to The Patriot-News today in response to something Sandusky's attorney, Joe Amendola, said in an interview this week. Sandusky was charged in the sexual assault of eight boys after a years-long grand jury investigation
Amendola, as part of an outline of his defense, said four of the eight victims in the 28-page grand jury presentment had recent friendly contact with Sandusky, including Victims Six and Two, who had dinner with the Sandusky family last summer.

In response, Janet said: "It is grotesque that Sandusky or his lawyer would suggest that a victim of molestation attending a dinner Sandusky invited him to is somehow a defense to the indefensible actions of which Sandusky has been accused."

State College civil rights attorney Justine Andronici -- whose partner, Amendola claims, represents Victim Two -- made similarly angry remarks Wednesday evening when she learned that Amendola believes that Victim Two is a positive witness for the defense.

The votes were unanimous. “Due to extraordinary circumstances, the board needed to act swiftly and decisively Nov. 9. We believe that immediate action was necessary and we stand by those decisions," board president Steve Garban said.

The entire 32-member board will accept the minutes at its January meeting.

Mary Kay Paterno was present and asked several questions about local members of the executive committee failing to show up in person. They attended by phone.

Center of Penn State Scandal, Sandusky Tells His Own Story
By JO BECKER
December 3, 2011

The former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, in his first extended interview since his indictment on sexual abuse charges last month, said Coach Joe Paterno never spoke to him about any suspected misconduct with minors. Mr. Sandusky also said the charity he worked for never restricted his access to children until he became the subject of a criminal investigation in 2008.
The failure by Mr. Paterno to act more aggressively after being told in 2002 that Mr. Sandusky had molested a 10-year-old boy in the showers of the university’s football building played a role in Mr. Paterno’s firing last month after 62 years at Penn State. Mr. Sandusky, in the interview, said that Mr. Paterno did not speak to him or confront him over the accusation, despite the fact that Mr. Sandusky had been one of his assistant coaches for three decades and was a regular presence at the football team’s complex for years after the 2002 episode.

Mr. Sandusky, in a nearly four-hour interview over two days this week, insisted he had never sexually abused any child, but he confirmed details of some of the events that prosecutors have cited in charging him with 40 counts of molesting young boys, all of whom came to know Mr. Sandusky through the charity he founded, known as the Second Mile.

Jerry Sandusky: 'I'm Not the Monster Everyone Made Me Out to Be'
By LEEZEL TANGLAO
December 3, 2011

Jerry Sandusky, the man at the center of the Penn State sex abuse scandal defended himself against sexual abuse allegations for the first time in an on camera interview.

"These allegations are false, I didn't do those things," Sandusky told the New York Times in an extensive interview. "I'm not the monster everyone made me out to be. I didn't engage in sexual acts."

Sandusky has been charged with molesting eight boys over the course of 15 years. He is set to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 13.

Sandusky said former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno never talked to him about any alleged incidents of abuse with minors.

"I don't know that he didn't know. I know that he never said anything to me, I know that," Sandusky told Times.
"I never talked to him about either one," Sandusky told the newspaper.

On Paterno's knowledge, Sandusky said, "He's the only one who knows whether anybody ever said anything to him."

Paterno was fired by Penn State Trustees on Nov. 9.

When Sandusky was first confronted by a Penn State official about the incident where young Assistant Coach Mike McQueary claimed to have seen him raping a boy in the team showers he said, "that it didn't happen, in my mind there wasn't inappropriate behavior."

He said his punishment was to no longer bring children to the college's football facilities.

"He didn't want me to bring kids in there and work them out anymore, and I remember saying well could I just work them out? And he said no."

In addition, Sandusky said the charity he worked for never restricted his access to young people, until he was the subject of a criminal investigation in 2008.

As a charity is this a normal thing to do?

Mr. Sandusky said he regularly gave money to the disadvantaged boys at his charity, opened bank accounts for them, and gave them gifts that had been donated to the charity.
