Retired detective describes 1998 Sandusky investigation
Believed charges warranted in case

By Paula Reed Ward, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
December 18, 2011

Retired University Park Detective Ronald Schreffler believed he had enough evidence in 1998 to charge then-Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky with something after the man admitted to a boy's mother to showering naked with her son.

"At the very minimum, there was enough evidence for some charges, like corruption of minors," Mr. Schreffler said on Wednesday, the day after Mr. Sandusky chose to waive his preliminary hearing on 52 counts that accuse him of molesting 10 boys over the last several years.

Instead, then-Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar told Mr. Schreffler he could not file charges. The detective said Mr. Gricar gave no explanation.

"You don't question Ray," Mr. Schreffler said, calling him the best prosecutor he'd ever worked with. "Ray was not a person to be intimidated. If he didn't feel the elements were there ..."

At the time, Mr. Gricar spoke to Mr. Schreffler's police chief, Tom Harmon, and that was it.

"'Gricar said there wasn't enough to charge, and he said to close the case,'" Mr. Schreffler recounted.

And that was it.

To me this is why the Penn State child sex crime case has everything to do with RG's disappearance.  I really believe he was thinking of spilling what he knew and someone took him out.

I hope Ray Gricar's case is looked at again, very carefully.  JMHO

Penn State Scandal Voted AP Sports Story of Year
December 19, 2011

NEW YORK –  The ouster of one of America's most revered coaches, Penn State's Joe Paterno, after shocking child sex abuse charges against his former assistant was overwhelmingly voted the sports story of the year by members of The Associated Press.
 ::snipping2::
There were 214 ballots submitted from U.S. news organizations that make up the AP's membership. The voters were asked to rank the top 10 sports stories of the year, with the first-place story getting 10 points, the second-place story receiving nine points, and so on.

The Penn State saga received 2,044 points and 172 first-place votes. It was also voted the No. 6 news story for 2011 in the AP's annual poll of U.S. editors and news directors.

The No. 2 sports story -- labor strife in the NFL and NBA -- had 15 first-place votes and 1,345 points.

Report: NBC reporter charged with DUI
December 20, 2011

NBC News correspondent Jay Gray charged with drunken driving after he attended a party at the house of the attorney for accused child molester Jerry Sandusky, TMZ reported Tuesday.
According to the report, Gray was pulled over after drinking at the Pennsylvania residence of attorney Joe Amendola, who had apparently invited a slew of reporters over to watch the Giants-Cowboys game last week.

The Harrisburg Patriot-News reported Monday that Amendola wants Sandusky and his wife, Dottie, to appear in an exclusive network interview.

An arrest record obtained by TMZ said the traffic stop occurred at 1:45am ET on Monday, Dec. 12.

Gray, Amendola and NBC have not commented on the report.

The Jerry Sandusky case brought forth painful memories and  has moved four adults sexually abused as children to come forward. I wonder how many others have suffered in silence over the years?

I'm posting this article in both this thread and the thread opened for the current discussion of the Bill Conlin accusations, because of the reference in it to Jerry Sandusky and PSU.  Link for those that would like to read or add to the thread:

It seems the recent stories about former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, who is charged with molesting 10 boys over 15 years, had some impact on Conlin's accusers coming forward after 40 years.

"What these women and this man have said to me is that they think it is important in the wake of Penn State and Syracuse to have this be part of the public discourse, that these things do happen, that they're so often hushed up. And that, in their case, no one reported it to law enforcement.

"It is under review," said Jim Bradshaw, a spokesman for the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights.

Insurer for Sandusky-founded charity asks court to rule against it having to pay for lawsuits
December 23, 2011

HARRISBURG, Pa. — An insurance company for a charity founded by Jerry Sandusky argued in a federal complaint Friday that it should not have to pay legal expenses or claims for the former Penn State assistant football coach now accused of molesting children.

Federal Insurance Co. said it would be wrong for the company to have to cover Sandusky because he is accused of conduct that did not involve his position as an executive or employee of The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth he founded in 1977.

In addition, “Pennsylvania courts have found that a person who sexually abuses a minor should not expect his insurer to cover his misconduct, particularly where the average insured purchasing insurance would cringe at the very suggestion that he was paying for coverage arising out of sexual abuse of a child,” lawyers for the New Jersey-based company wrote.
 ::snipping2::
His criminal defense lawyer, Joe Amendola, said Friday he had not seen the complaint, filed in federal court in Williamsport. Amendola said Sandusky was served Wednesday with a lawsuit filed in Philadelphia by one alleged victim and was getting a different lawyer to represent him in civil cases.
 ::snipping2::
The complaint asks the court to rule that Federal has no obligation to pay Sandusky’s criminal defense costs or to indemnify him for civil or criminal claims related to alleged sexual abuse of children.

“Extending insurance coverage to Sandusky is unlawful because providing insurance coverage for claims arising from sexual assault, molestation, and/or abuse of minors is repugnant to Pennsylvania public policy,” according to the complaint.

Jerry Sandusky's wife is under increased scrutiny by those who wonder what she knows
BY SARA GANIM AND ELIZABETH GIBSON, The Patriot-News

Sandusky’s attorney, Joe Amendola, said Dottie Sandusky doesn’t have an attorney and sees no need for one. The couple is considering speaking together publicly after the new year, Amendola said — either to Oprah Winfrey, to the CBS show “60 Minutes,” to NBC’s “Rock Center” or to ABC’s Barbara Walters.
 ::snipping2::
My comments in green.  MB
I cannot believe Dottie Sandusky doesn't have an attorney, and I beg to differ with the  statement "sees no need for one".  I believe the prosecution will want to ask Dottie Sandusky questions and although she will never be charged with any crime (imo), she may end up losing everything she has to civil suits that can be brought forward, and stands to possibly lose everything.  Again jmho.  Maybe this is Dottie feeling she doesn't need an attorney because she has done no wrong, because sometimes when an attorney is obtained for legal advice, others seem to assume guilt and lawyering up.  I've seen it posted so many times on this forum: If a person is innocent, why do they need an attorney    I personally believe it would be in Dottie's best interest to get an attorney for legal advice and to act as a spokesman or buffer to protect her, especially if she's innocent.  JMHO
