Sara Ganim, 24, wins Pulitzer for coverage of Penn State sex abuse scandal

Sara Ganim had a motto when reporting on the sex abuse scandal at Penn State University: “Move it forward.” She wanted to address unanswered questions and tell a side of the story that national media outlets weren’t capturing. Ganim’s hard work won her a 2012 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting.

Ganim, a 24-year-old Patriot News reporter, is one of the youngest journalists to win a Pulitzer Prize. (Pulitzer administrator Sig Gissler told me the youngest winner is Jackie Crosby, a 23-year-old Telegraph & News reporter who won a Pulitzer in 1985 for her examination of academics and athletics at the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology.)

Ganim started covering Penn State’s sex abuse scandal as a 22-year-old, long before it became a national story. She broke the story that a grand jury was investigating Penn State Assistant Football Coach Jerry Sandusky for sexual abuse allegations, and has received numerous awards for her ongoing coverage.

She’s the winner of the 2012 Distinguished Writing Award for Local Accountability Reporting from the American Society of News Editors, the 2011 Scripps Howard Award for Community Journalism, the George K. Polk Award, and the Sidney Award. Newsweek recently named her one of the “150 Fearless Women in the World.”

Ganim says on her personal website that she’s been a newspaper reporter since she was a 15-year-old high school sophomore. She was a freelance reporter for the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and later a news intern for the Associated Press. In 2008, she graduated from Penn State University, where she wrote for the student newspaper. While in college, she began writing for the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa., where she covered the courts and crime beat.

Ganim — who has also served as an adjunct professor at Penn State and reported for WZWW Radio State College — went on to become a crime reporter for the Patriot News.

Starting off at a smaller paper, she said, gave her an opportunity to learn a variety of skills.

“My first job was great because I had to do everything and so I learned to do a lot in a little bit of time,” she said in an interview with WOUB last week. “I learned to really kind of set my own direction and be out on my own. When you get to a paper a little bit bigger with the resources, it’s like you’re immediately better for it.”

Though her official title is crime reporter, Ganim’s work might be better described as investigative. She has said that she wakes up at 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. most mornings and starts working.

“I have a police scanner on my nightstand,” she writes on her personal site. “I fall to sleep and wake up to the morning news. I work 60-hour weeks digging and investigating, chatting up sources, and peeling back layers until I find amazing stories.”

Penn St. officials seek delay in pretrial filings
April 17, 2012

HARRISBURG, Pa. –  Two Penn State administrators accused of lying to the grand jury that investigated Jerry Sandusky are asking for more time to make their latest pretrial court filing.

Lawyers for Tim Curley and Gary Schultz asked a judge on Tuesday to push back the deadline for them to respond to state prosecutors until May 4.

Curley, the school's athletic director on leave, was to file the written answer sometime Tuesday. Schultz, a now-retired university vice president, faces an April 27 deadline.

Their attorneys say prosecutors have yet to produce all promised records.

Gov. Corbett Blasts ESPN for Article on his Role in Paterno, Spanier Dismissals
By Nate Mink
April 17, 2012

Twelve days after a scathing article run by ESPN depicted him as zealous at the chance to play a role in the Penn State scandal and the dismissals of Joe Paterno and Graham Spanier, Gov. Tom Corbett blasted the organization, calling the article "totally, factually wrong."

Addressing reporters in New Cumberland on Monday, Corbett said he was reluctant to discuss specifics of the story because of a gag order issued earlier this month by the judge in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case.

"But at some point in time," Corbett told reporters, "I will let everybody know exactly what I think of that article."

Watch the video of Governor Corbett’s press conference.  He states “there is now a gag order out there
about Penn State.”  He goes on after that
to talk about not influencing the Sandusky jury selection.

News flash Governor Corbett
---  the gag order refers to the
Sandusky case, not Penn State

Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit, look at the illustrious governor of PA squirm when the truth leaks!  Damage control mode eh Tommy boy?  You can definitely tell it's the truth with how uncomfortable he is with it, and you can also tell he's a member of the PSU BOT since he feels he needs to respond to it numerous times trying to save his @ss.  Corbett you are excrement.

Links: Corbett says ESPN “totally” wrong, Erickson subpoenaed, AG race goes negative

The governor’s spokesman had already responded (something about a grassy knoll) to the ESPN magazine article illustrating Corbett as having a major role in the late Joe Paterno’s firing-by-phone, and the ouster of former Penn State president Graham Spanier.  Well, yesterday, Gov. Corbett himself responded, and as the Patriot-News reports, he didn’t mince words about what he thought of the story:

"It is totally, factually wrong," Corbett said, during a brief press conference after an unrelated bill signing in New Cumberland. "Not even close to the facts."

Game Over
April 17, 2012

The book, Game Over: Jerry Sandusky, Penn State and the Culture of Silence, was released Tuesday. Authors and Post-Gazette sports writers Bill Moushey and Bob Dvorchak talk about the daunting task of developing a 75,000-word manuscript in less than 10 weeks, and the difficulties involved with interviewing people in the close-knit Penn State community about such as raw subject.

Hear this story Tuesday at noon on 90.5 FM. It will be rebroadcast at 8:00 PM and posted online.

PSU prez to face 'questions truthfully'
Updated April 16, 2012

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Penn State President Rodney Erickson received a subpoena last week to testify regarding the investigation into former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, the university said Monday.

The subject or subjects of Erickson's future testimony was not immediately clear, and university spokeswoman Lisa Powers declined to provide a copy of the subpoena, which was first disclosed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Erickson's "attorney is discussing with the attorney general's office various aspects of the subpoena, including the actual date of testimony," Powers said. "President Erickson intends to fully cooperate and answer all questions truthfully."

Erickson to testify in Sandusky probe
By Bill Schackner / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
April 17, 2012

 ::snipping2::
Mr. Erickson, formerly Penn State's provost, became the school's permanent president in January, weeks after the arrest of Mr. Sandusky on multiple charges of child sex assault exploded into a scandal that led to the firing of famed football coach Joe Paterno and the resignation of Mr. Erickson's predecessor, Graham Spanier.

Both Mr. Paterno and Mr. Spanier had faced withering criticism over Penn State's failure to report to law enforcement an alleged assault by Mr. Sandusky of a boy in a campus shower in 2002.

University officials say they are cooperating with the investigation and have sought to distance the current Penn State administration from the scandal, noting that Mr. Erickson worked as provost and was not involved with athletics.

"I don't think it complicates those efforts because, as we've previously said, he was on the academic side of the house and had little to do with and knew little about the athletics side," Ms. Powers said.

She said it's no surprise Mr. Erickson was subpoenaed, given the ongoing investigation by the attorney general.

Nils Frederiksen, a spokesman for state Attorney General Linda Kelly, said his office does not comment on matters pertaining to an ongoing grand jury investigation and thus could neither confirm nor deny that Mr. Erickson has been served.
 ::snipping2::
Word of the subpoena comes amid an election to decide three alumni seats on the board of trustees that has generated heightened interest, given the scandal's fallout. Some alumni and others have called for board members to resign.

Maribeth Schmidt, a spokeswoman for Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship -- or PS4RS, a group of mostly alumni that is promoting board reform -- said it's hard to gauge the significance of the subpoena. She doubted that alumni will be surprised by the subpoena and added that many believe Penn State so far has not lived up to pledges to be fully forthcoming about what transpired.

"Everyone still wants to know who knew what and when," she said. "I don't think we have any of those answers yet."

She said Mr. Erickson is being "put out front as a mouthpiece -- a short-term mouthpiece."

The Penn State sex abuse case is one of the biggest scandals in the history of college sports and it was a complete shock to most fans. Penn State spends $7.5M on Sandusky scandal
April 17, 2012

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State has incurred about $7.5 million in expenses through the end of February in dealing with the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

Most of the tab, about $5.3 million, has been spent on crisis communications and on an internal probe being conducted by former FBI director Louis Freeh. Legal expenses represent another $1.2 million, according to an accounting on Penn State's website.

If Penn State really wanted to extract itself from the Sandusky crime they would get rid of all the upper management of the school and bring in outsiders.  Start fresh with folks that don't owe anything to anyone associated with Penn State.

Authors: hard to believe Paterno didn't know about Sandusky
April 17, 2012

NEW YORK (CBS) - The Penn State sex abuse case is one of the biggest scandals in the history of college sports and it was a complete shock to most fans. But warning signs were ignored for years, according to a new book called "Game Over: Jerry Sandusky, Penn State, and the Culture of Silence" by Bill Moushey and Bob Dvorchak.

Penn State's character as an isolated place is established in "Game Over." "Penn State is in the middle of the valley, in the middle of the state, in the middle of nowhere, and there was this culture that kept everything inside that just could not put its hands around something of this magnitude happening at Penn State," Dvorchak said Tuesday on "CBS This Morning."

It was a world that Joe Paterno knew and knew well, according to the authors. Moushey said it's hard to believe that he didn't know what was going on at the university.

"He helped develop them entire program and he basically ran the institution and had pretty much say over everything, including when he decided he might leave and who was going to be hired after him," Moushey said.

Paterno family calls new book "unprofessional and irresponsible rehash"
April 18, 2012

The family of Joe Paterno says a new book contains "false" and "slanderous" statements about the late Penn State head football coach.
 ::snipping2::
Here is the Paterno family's statement.

"A new book about the Jerry Sandusky case is attracting attention because of its egregious use of false and slanderous statements about the late Penn State Coach Joe Paterno. This unprofessional and irresponsible rehash from clip files and anonymous interviews was slapped together in a matter of weeks and rushed to market, as the authors have acknowledged.

"The authors also admit that most people they contacted did not want to talk with them, and many of the ones who did talk insisted on not being identified. The price of their obsession with speed over accuracy is a book that distorts the truth and offers conclusions and theories for which the authors have no evidence.

"To fully correct these errors and outright lies would take far more words than this slanderous account is worth. However, one outrageous and baseless claim that cannot go unchallenged is that Coach Paterno knew about a 1998 incident involving Jerry Sandusky that was investigated by local law enforcement. There is indisputable evidence showing that Coach Paterno was not informed about that investigation, as well as the Coach's own sworn testimony to that effect.

"Further, their claim that knowledge of Sandusky's alleged conduct led Coach Paterno to push for Sandusky's retirement in 1999 also is baseless and unsupported by any evidence.

"These and many other lies, errors and slanderous allegations are proof that the only objective for these authors was to exploit this tragedy for their own personal gain by producing a fictionalized narrative that smears the reputation of Joe Paterno."

Penn State pays Paterno family under his contract
April 19, 2012

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Penn State has agreed to provide millions in payments and benefits to Joe Paterno's estate and family members under the late football coach's employment contract, although a family lawyer says the Paternos did not sign away their right to sue.

The school turned over four checks Thursday worth more than $3 million for bonuses that covered the season, bowl game and entire career, according to a university spokeswoman.

A breakdown provided by Penn State included the use by Paterno's family of a Beaver Stadium suite for 25 years and $900,000 from television and radio revenue from last season. Half the broadcast revenues were paid in February, and the rest will be paid later this year, the school said.

Paterno family lawyer Wick Sollers issued a statement Thursday saying there has been no settlement but rather "a straightforward payment of moneys indisputably owed to the Paterno estate. The university had requested that the family agree to a full release in return for the payments under the contract. That request was declined and no release was signed."

Without a release, Paterno's estate could still sue under the contract or some other reason, if it wishes.

School spokesman Bill Mahon described it as the university and Paterno's estate finalizing the remaining payments that were due to the longtime coach, who was fired in November in the wake of former assistant Jerry Sandusky's arrest on child sexual abuse charges.

Paterno died of lung cancer in January at age 85.

The university also said it would pay the coach's widow, Sue Paterno, $1,000 a month for life, and provide her with on-campus parking and access to university hydrotherapy equipment.

Other elements of the package include a final paycheck of $34,000, a death benefit of $51,000 and $350,000 - payable over five years - under a 1986 consulting agreement. The university also agreed to forgive $350,000 in outstanding loans and debt. No explanation was provided regarding Paterno's debts to the school.

While the school said in a news release that the total value of the package was "over $5.5 million," added together the various elements are worth about $6.7 million. The stadium suite was valued at $1.5 million.

Penn State Admits Official Fired Earlier This Week Was Fired For His Role In Sandusky Investigation
April 21, 2012

In an admission that shocks absolutely no one, unnamed sources within the Penn State athletic department have confirmed that associate athletic director Mark Sherburne was fired this week for his role in the investigation of child sex abuse claims against former coach Jerry Sandusky and the administration's failure to properly act on same. Specifically, sources indicate Sherburne was fired for his failure to timely comply with the state Attorney General's subpoena for documents related to the investigation.

Group raises voice in support of alleged Jerry Sandusky victims
By Mike Dawson mdawson@centredaily.com — State College - Centre Daily Times
April 25, 2012

A group of Penn State students wants the young men in the Jerry Sandusky case to know they’re not forgotten and that local people have compassion for them.

The students have begun a campaign called Voices4Victims in which they’re encouraging people to write letters of support to the alleged victims. The messages, collected from five drop-off locations and by mail and email, will be screened and forwarded to the attorneys representing the young men.

The letters will be collected through Friday, but emails and mail will continue to be received indefinitely.

The students don’t care if they get eight or 8,000 responses. What’s important to them is that the young men know the public supports them, they said.

“It’s designed to directly communicate with the boys and young men at the heart of what’s happened here to make sure they know they’re not forgotten, despite the public dialogue,” said Matt Bodenschatz, a 38-year-old

student and male sexual abuse survivor who came up with the idea that began as a class project.
 ::snipping2::
Bodenschatz also hopes the campaign will redirect the focus of the abuse case from outrage over former head coach Joe Paterno’s firing to community building and healing. Further, he hopes it’ll remove the abstraction around the young men — that they are thought of, for example, as Victim 1 or Victim 2 — and show they are real people.

There have been 35 responses since the campaign kicked off Monday — 10 emails, including one from someone in Canada, and 25 letters.
(List of drop off locations in article)
 ::snipping2::
Bodenschatz reached out to the attorneys of the young men who are the alleged victims in the state’s case against Sandusky to make sure they had received the letters. Bodenschatz said through discussions with them, he’s confident the letters will be well-received.

Some attorneys representing the alleged victims in the case declined to comment because of the judge’s gag order.

Voices4Victims was an advocacy project in the students’ Communications 411 class taught by assistant professor Michelle Rodino- Colocino. She said she’s gratified the students are applying what they’ve learned to real-world needs.

The group has been promoting the initiative on various levels, through social media, email and word of mouth. They’ve networked with abuse victim advocacy organizations to spread awareness.

A self-described feminist, group member Kathleen Topham, 21, said the lack of ongoing support on campus drove her to work on the project.

“No one was paying attention to the actual victims in this case,” she said.
