Jerry Sandusky Trial Hears From Tearful Mom of Victim 9
June 18, 2012

The mother of a boy who says he was raped by former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky tearfully told a jury today that she felt responsible for pushing her son to spend time with the coach because "he was Jerry Sandusky. He was an important guy."

The prosecution's final witness in their case against Sandusky said that she never asked her son, the man known as Victim 9, what exactly happened to him in Sandusky's basement during the sleepovers he said he had every weekend for nearly four years.

On Thursday, Victim 9, an 18-year-old man, said that he was repeatedly forced to perform oral sex on Sandusky and be sodomized by Sandusky in the coach's basement. The testimony followed seven other witnesses who said they were sexually abused by Sandusky.

Sandusky, 68, is charged with 52 counts of molesting 10 boys. He could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted of the charges.

Today, Victim 9's mother cried on the stand as she said she never asked her son what happened to him because she didn't think he would want to tell her.

"I just can't imagine what happened to him," she said.

"Do you feel responsible?" prosecutor Joseph McGettigan asked.

"Yes I do," she said.

Oh, it gets worse.

Quote
Later, when former coach Booker T. Brooks took the stand, he too said showering with children was a common and accepted practice.
“Even before I became a coach. As a youngster in Akron, Ohio, I went to summer camps sponsored by the YMCA and showered with adult men who were not relatives of mine all the time,” Brooks said. “Since I’m a grandfather, I take my grandchild to the local YMCA and since she’s not old enough to go into a room by herself, we shower together. I put dry clothes on her. That’s common.”

So, now, we've got a friend coach that takes his grandDAUGHTER to the Y and showers with her.  How many other men are in there watching him bathe his grandchild??????

Sometimes a shower can wait till we get home...  Just sayin'...  The Y I used to go to has a couple of "family" dressing/shower rooms.  They are separate and designed for just this sort of thing, so moms (or dads) with their younger ones can go in and shower in an appropriate manner. Also,  in ALL YMCA's I've been in (4) the pool area also has a shower, where swimmers are supposed to shower off before getting in the pool.  Shower off there when you get out. A child could be taken to a dressing area and privately changed to dry clothes.  But comparing showering with a grandchild at the Y and Jerry Sandusky showering with young boys late at night alone are two different things, imo.

Mom of victim 9 ought to be shot.  She notices her son having no underwear, having changes in health and behavior, she pick him up with no shoes, and she does nothing about it? If she felt he wouldn't talk to her, then she felt something something was wrong, why didn't she get professional help for her son? Why would she force her son to go to sleepovers with an adult man for 4 years?

Reminds me of some of the parents in the Michael Jackson cases.  They "knew" but turned a deaf eye, and then called wolf a day late and a dollar short.  In my opinion, they sold their children short.

I hope parents in the future will not be taken in by men in power who want to spend the night ALONE with their children.

The Sandusky trial is a national crime story. Not much different from the Catholic priests, Casey Anthony, or O.J. Simpson (which, in my recollection, was not carried back with the football scores). It represents a tragedy and an important issue which needs light shed on it.

Failings of Penn State officials exposed at Jerry Sandusky trial
Posted: Monday June 18, 2012 10:02AM ; Updated: Monday June 18, 2012 12:52PM

 ::snipping2::
Though he was never charged with a crime, Paterno was essentially the first to be tried in this fiasco, albeit in the court of public opinion. Sandusky, the man whose alleged crimes form the basis of this scandal, is being tried in a real court as we speak, faced with a likely life prison sentence if convicted of even some of the 51 counts he's facing.

But the story will be far from over if and when jurors reach that verdict. Three senior Penn State administrators -- athletic director Tim Curley, retired senior vice president Gary Schultz and former university president Graham Spanier -- also knew of McQueary's account but chose not to alert authorities. As new details emerge, it appears their day of reckoning is coming. And when it does, the public may see this was not the "biggest scandal in college sports history," as many declared it last fall. In fact, it was something much worse.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Penn State board member Keith Masser became the first power figure at the university to say publicly that he suspects that the administration headed by Spanier engaged in a cover-up regarding Sandusky. The board fired Spanier on Nov. 9, the same night it ousted Paterno. However, "We had no idea [at the time] he would be involved in a cover-up," said Masser.

Masser's statement stems from an explosive Sandusky-related revelation early last week. As first reported by NBC News, an ongoing investigation being conducted for the board by former FBI director Louis Freeh has uncovered e-mails and documents showing discussions between Spanier and other officials over McQueary's account about Sandusky and the boy in the shower. They've since been turned over to state prosecutors. In one exchange, Spanier and Schultz -- who oversaw the university's police department -- agreed not to inform social services agencies because it would be "humane" to Sandusky.

The e-mails apparently contradict previous testimony by Curley, Schultz "and others," said NBC's law enforcement source, that they were not told the true nature of what McQueary now says he saw in that shower. ("Absent seeing a penis, yes, I think they were having sex," he testified last week.) In his grand jury testimony, Schultz said, "... the allegations came across as not that serious." And yet it was also reported last week that Schultz -- who McQueary viewed to be "very much like a district attorney" of Penn State -- maintained a secret file on Sandusky. McQueary's father, John, also testified last week, recalling a conversation with Schultz at the time in which "Mr. Schultz said he had heard noise about this before, earlier than Mike's [complaint]."

Similarly, Curley told the grand jury that McQueary said Sandusky and the boy "were horsing around, that they were playful," that "I was not aware of anything sexual." It's not clear yet the extent of what Spanier knew. He did not meet with McQueary but was briefed by the other two officials. But whatever's contained in those documents, it's enough that Spanier is suing the university to turn over e-mails sent between 1998 and 2004, and for Masser, the board member, to suspect the president's involvement in a cover-up.

"I hope the truth comes out, and from a board standpoint it was Freeh's investigation that found these e-mails that relate Spanier, Curley and Schultz to the suspected cover-up," said Masser.

Sandusky trial recesses for the day
June 18, 2012

The Jerry Sandusky trial has recessed, with trial Judge John M. Cleland announcing the defense may rest by noon Wednesday.

Prosecution rebuttals may conclude by late Wednesday, which means the jury may begin deliberations as soon as Thursday morning, Cleland said.

Jurors are to be sequestered in a hotel during deliberations, the judge said.

“Once you begin deliberating,” Cleland told jurors, ”the schedule is yours.”

For the time being, he said, the trial will remain in recess until 9 a.m. Tuesday. He said the court needs to resolve “some technical issues regarding some of the witnesses.”

He did not elaborate.

Jurors heard from a total of six defense witnesses Monday, the first day of defense presentations. One witness, a former top fundraiser for Sandusky’s Second Mile charity, said he saw “a mutual admiration between Second Mile youth” – boys and girls – with the former football coach.

Sandusky Trial: Defense May Rest Wednesday; Jury Could Begin Deliberations as Early as Thursday

Updated at 2:25 p.m.

BELLEFONTE – Judge John Cleland said the defense could rest its case in the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse trial as early as Wednesday – and the jury could start deliberations by Thursday.

Court recessed for the day around 2 p.m. Monday, with Judge John Cleland citing "technical issues" regarding witnesses.

During deliberations, Cleland said the jury will be sequestered and will stay in a hotel as long as it takes to decide a verdict.

The afternoon was otherwise characterized by short testimonies – in total, three witnesses took about 25 minutes to be questioned and cross-examined.

A Penn State employee, a former board member from The Second Mile and an school teacher from Bellefonte Elementary School took the stand, but no one took it as an opportunity to give any accolades to Sandusky or confirm or deny his activity with children.

The former Second Mile employee, David Pasquinelli was the character witness to attest to Sandusky's character and his interaction with children.

"I saw a lot of goofing around... Jerry had a unique way," Pasquinelli said. "He inspired a lot of us how to get on their level and communicate."

Prosecutors rest case in Sandusky sex-abuse trial
Posted: Monday June 18, 2012 11:38AM ; Updated: Monday June 18, 2012 2:30PM

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) Prosecutors in Jerry Sandusky's child sex abuse trial rested their case Monday after calling the mother of one of his alleged victims, who told the jury she thought it was unusual her son's underwear was frequently missing from the laundry.

The woman also said the former Penn State assistant football coach contacted her son to be a character reference for him after the first round of charges were filed against him in November.

The woman said her son would claim he had thrown away his underwear because he had an accident. Last week, the teen said Sandusky forced him to have anal sex that made him bleed, but he'd "dealt with it."

"I always wondered why he never had any underwear in the laundry," she said. "There was never any underwear, any socks ... that was odd to me."

The woman was the last of 21 witnesses presented by prosecutors in five days of testimony.

Sandusky's attorneys immediately called their first witness, former Penn State assistant Dick Anderson, who had sat behind Sandusky during opening statements last week.

Also Monday, prosecutors withdrew one count against Sandusky, saying the statute he was charged under did not apply at the time of the alleged illegal contact.

That leaves 51 counts involving 10 alleged victims over a 15-year span. Sandusky, whose November arrest led to the ouster of Penn State's president and the firing of Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno, has denied wrongdoing.
 ::snipping2::
Defense attorneys have gotten approval to argue that letters and other acts of alleged grooming by Sandusky are evidence of a personality disorder.

Jurors have already heard Sandusky deny the abuse allegations, in the form of an audio recording of a stilted television interview Sandusky conducted shortly after his November arrest.

The defense has sought to show how the stories of accusers have changed over time, that they were prodded and coached by investigators and prosecutors, that some are motivated to lie by the hopes of a civil lawsuit jackpot, and to paint Sandusky's interactions with children as misunderstood and part of a lifelong effort to help, not victimize, them.

In a recent court filing, Sandusky's lawyers have asked the judge to allow them to put before jurors the out-of-court statements made by former Penn State President Graham Spanier and Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, two university administrators who are fighting criminal charges they lied to the Sandusky grand jury and did not properly report suspected child abuse. If permitted, that could help Sandusky undercut the credibility of a witness who says he saw Sandusky sexually abusing a yet-unidentified boy in a team shower more than a decade ago. The judge has not ruled on the request.
