Penn State Football Program Shouldn't Be Punished by NCAA, Despite Heinous Nature of Crimes
By Sean Peick
July 15, 2012

Never in the NCAA's wildest dreams could they have imagined a scenario as horrifying the one that unfolded at Penn State. It's for precisely that reason that, despite Jerry Sandusky's 45 counts of child sex abuse convictions and a preponderance of evidence that Joe Paterno and high-ranking university officials withheld information on his crimes, the NCAA cannot and should not punish the Nittany Lions football program -- much less hand down the death penalty for which many are calling. It seems absolutely ludicrous on the surface though, doesn't it? Ohio State football can face sanctions because some players traded memorabilia and cash for tattoos. Miami football can face sanctions because a wildly rogue booster gave impermissible benefits to numerous players. Southern Methodist football can get hit with the death penalty -- so called because it bans the school from competing in a given sport for at least one year -- because players were being paid from a booster-supplied slush fund. And yet, Penn State football -- a program that was overseen by men who supposedly shielded a child rapist and gave no thought to his victims -- is untouchable by the NCAA. Or at least, it should be. It is not untouchable because of the nature of its crimes. Those are so far beyond any scandal in the history of college sports as to not even be comparable. Rather, it is untouchable simply because the NCAA has nothing in place to deal with this. The crimes committed by Sandusky and the cover-up seemingly perpetrated by Paterno, former president Graham Spanier, former vice president Gary Schultz and current athletic director -- albeit on administrative leave -- Tim Curley is so far beyond the purview of the NCAA bylaws that it's laughable. The NCAA -- and by extension, its bylaws -- exist to ensure, in essence, fair play among schools and that the ideals of amateur sports are upheld. There is nothing about harboring and protecting child rapists. The NCAA could not possibly have foreseen that there would ever be a situation like this, so they didn't write any bylaws to deal with it -- and yet here we are.

Sources: PSU trustees left furious
By Don Van Natta Jr. | ESPN.com
July 15, 2012

Penn State's Board of Trustees announced last week that it was "deeply ashamed" by the findings of the Freeh report, which was unsparing in its criticism of the trustees' and top administrators' bungled handling of the Jerry Sandusky criminal investigation in 2011 and their firing of Joe Paterno.

But behind closed doors, in private committee meetings and during several meals, the trustees expressed fury at the way they were portrayed in the report: as passive, ill-prepared or uninformed bystanders while then-university president Graham Spanier and then-general counsel Cynthia Baldwin downplayed the potential threat of the Sandusky investigation to Penn State.

The Freeh report criticizes trustees for failing to grasp the significance of the state attorney general's criminal inquiry of Sandusky and the grand jury appearances of Paterno, athletics director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz. Freeh's investigators blamed the trustees' culture of secrecy and deference for university leaders to allow the crisis to do more to harm Penn State's reputation than any other event in its 156-year history.

 ::snipping2::
Two trustees said the board was most angry at Steve Garban, the then-board chairman who was informed by Spanier in April 2011 of the Sandusky investigation but failed to notify his fellow trustees, according to the Freeh report.

Yes, convicted pedophile Jerry Sandusky may be "most at fault".  But it appears there are/were a number of people in position that also must face consequences for their part.  Did some look away?  Did some cover up?  Just because Sandusky is in jail doesn't make it go away.  JMHO

Jerry Sandusky case: Three men say they were abused in '70s or '80s
By Sara Ganim, The Patriot-News
Published: Monday, July 16, 2012, 10:41 AM     Updated: Monday, July 16, 2012, 11:52 AM

Sources close to the Jerry Sandusky case say that three men have come forward and told police that they were abused in the 1970s or 1980s by the convicted pedophile.

They are the first men to allege abuse before the 1990s, and if found to be credible, would directly attack the 68-year-old's defense argument that a person doesn't become pedophile in his or her 50s.

In the early 1970s, when one of the men says he was abused, Jerry Sandusky would have been in his late 20s.
 ::snipping2::

The grand jury investigation that led to his arrest is still meeting and could be hearing from more potential victims, but the attorney general's office has not said if more charges will be filed.
::snipping2::Two sources with knowledge of the investigation say police are aware these men have come forward.

It is not known, however, if these men were contacted or interviewed by Louis Freeh's team, which was hired by Penn State to do an internal review of the scandal and the university's response.

Paterno family denies Louis Freeh report findings
By MICHAEL RUBINKAM
Associated Press
July 16, 2012
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Joe Paterno's family on Monday strongly denied the findings of a special investigator who concluded the late football coach and other top Penn State administrators concealed Jerry Sandusky's sexual abuse of children in order to shield the school from bad publicity.

In a statement, the family said its lawyers will conduct their own investigation of the scandal.

"Our interest has been and remains the uncovering of the truth," the statement read.

A message from President Rodney Erickson
July 16, 2012

Penn State President Rodney Erickson sent a message to students, faculty and staff this morning (July 16) as the University community continues to digest the 267-page Freeh Report. Here is the message he sent:
Moving forward from the Freeh Report
Dear University Community:
As we all can attest, it has been a heart-wrenching and difficult eight months since we first learned of the charges against Jerry Sandusky and top-level Penn State officials. With the release Thursday of the investigative report by Judge Louis Freeh, the last several days have taken an additional toll.
My heart remains heavy for the victims of this tragedy, which has been a sobering reminder of what can occur when we fail to protect society's weakest and most vulnerable. As one learned scholar so aptly said, "All that's necessary for the forces of evil to win in the world is for enough good men to do nothing."
We can never again allow this to happen.

'We Are Penn State' and What That Means Today
By John Milewski
July 16, 2012

In the initial aftermath of the Sandusky story becoming national news and the frenzy of activity that reached a crescendo when living legend "Joe Pa" was relieved of his duties by Penn State's trustees, network cameras showed us a gathering of supportive students at the Paterno home. At various times during their vigil, they erupted with the rallying cry, "We are Penn State." It's a familiar chorus to anyone even peripherally involved with the university. It adorns everything from bumper stickers to bath towels and is the most common vocalization of the connection many former and current Nittany Lions feel toward their alma mater.

"We are Penn State."

So what does it mean to be "Penn State" now that the Freeh report has exposed the depth and scope of the university's failure?

Attorneys: Spanier's Top-Secret Security Clearance Upheld After Investigation
by Laura Nichols
July 16, 2012 6:45 PM

Attorneys for former Penn State President Graham Spanier released a statement Monday afternoon attacking the credibility of Louis Freeh's report and that their client's top-secret security clearance was ignored in the investigation.
Freeh's investigative report of Penn State was released Thursday and revealed the university's top officials and former head coach Joe Paterno covered up Jerry Sandusky's pedophilia, for which he was convicted June 22.
The statement, which expresses sympathy for Sandusky's victims in the last sentence, says another investigation of Spanier was being conducted simultaneously with Freeh's. The former resulted in the reaffirmation of Spanier's top-secret security clearance, which he holds because of his work with the federal government.

You know, I'm not sure why Spanier thinks his security clearance is so important to this case.  It has nothing to do with covering up the Sandusky crimes unless he used his ties to the federal gov't to deal with Ray Gricar.  Boy, wouldn't that open up a whole new can of worms!

Penn State student group: Tent city now will be Nittanyville
By Audrey Snyder and Jessica Tully, Special for USA TODAY
July 16, 2012

The tent-city tradition for Penn State students for home football games will undergo a name change as members of Paternoville voted Monday evening to drop the name of former head coach Joe Paterno from the student-run organization.

n wake of the release last week of Louis Freeh's report investigating the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal, the student organization and its board decided it was time to officially change the name to "Nittanyville."
"We have informed Penn State administrators in both Student Affairs and Athletics of our decision," Troy Weller, a Penn State senior and president of the student group, said in a news release announcing the change. "They said we will continue to have their support, which has been the case since we became an official organization in 2006.
"Now, it's a new era … And by changing the name to Nittanyville we want to return the focus to the overall team and the thousands of students who support it. We thank the Paterno family for their gracious assistance and support over the last several years."
Students will continue camping out this season in order to get the best seats in the first-come, first served students section.

I can't help but feel that we are only at the tip of the truth iceberg.  I hope the family does some heavy soul searching before they go down the investigation path.  A good grilling of Mrs. Paterno might also be in order.

Mark Emmert talks PSU scandal
July 17, 2012

NCAA president Mark Emmert has not ruled out drastically punishing Penn State football in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Emmert gave a candid interview Monday on PBS' "Tavis Smiley," claiming that he still is waiting for Penn State's official response to the Freeh report and acknowledging that the NCAA has not eliminated the possibility of imposing severe sanctions against the school's storied football program.

"I've never seen anything as egregious as this in terms of just overall conduct and behavior inside a university and hope never to see it again," Emmert said during the interview. "What the appropriate penalties are, if there are determinations of violations, we'll have to decide.
