When it comes to crazy days in this scandal, this ranks up there with the Pedobear incident and burning diplomas on the Old Main steps

@VinceLattanzio Not sure who chartered it, as far as I can tell from Flight Aware it didn't come from and isn't headed to UP airport.

Law required children's charity to be told of Jerry Sandusky investigation in 1998
By Sara Ganim, July 16, 2012

No matter the decision in 1998 — to press child sex abuse charges or not — The Second Mile was supposed to know that Jerry Sandusky was under investigation.
For several weeks, while police interviewed the boy who said he was touched in a Penn State shower, while the boy’s mother confronted Sandusky in her home, and while counselors issued contradictory reports about the charity founder’s behavior, Sandusky was supposed to be under supervision because of his affiliation with a child care agency.
But he wasn’t, according to a source with knowledge of grand jury testimony on this subject.

Damon Sims Sends Letter to Student Body
July 17, 2012

Damon Sims, the  Vice President for Student Affairs at Penn State, sent a letter to Penn State students last night, which emphasized the commitment of student affairs to move forward from the findings in the Freeh Report. Sims took over the position in 2008 after the controversial Vicky Triponey resigned — a woman who has recently gained national attention for her criticism of Joe Paterno.

Plane Owner Claims FAA Shake Down Over Masters “Bootyism” Banner
July 17, 2012

The owner of the aerial sign company that flew anti-Tiger Woods banners over The Masters says the FAA silenced him with a "bogus" safety inspection. If planes existed when the First Amendment was written, this would totally be in there.

Jim Miller, of Air America Aerial Ads in Genoa, Ohio, says his company was contracted through a third-party ad agency to carry five signs over Augusta National last weekend. However, after flying just two of them on Thursday, a mysteriously sudden FAA safety inspection grounded the plane. (It was forced to return to Ohio to make the necessary repairs.) Miller says it was "a bogus write up" orchestrated by forces greater that you and I can possibly understand.

Paterno alma mater weighs stripping his name from athletic award
By Daniel Lovering
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts | Tue Jul 17, 2012 1:53pm EDT

(Reuters) - Joe Paterno's alma mater may remove his name from its annual award for student athletes amid a child sex abuse scandal involving an assistant to the legendary Penn State football coach, Brown University said on Tuesday.

Brown also eliminated a football coaching chair named after Paterno earlier this year "due to issues that predated the Penn State matter," the university said in a statement.

Penn State President Rodney Erickson: Decision about Joe Paterno statue in 7 to 10 days
July 17, 2012

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State President Rodney Erickson said he hadn’t seen the commercial plane circling the university with a message urging the removal of the Joe Paterno statue, but the university is still looking at the issue of what, if anything, should be done with the Paterno likeness.

Erickson said he would be talking to the President’s Council and touching base with the board of trustees.

“I would say within the next week or so we should have that sorted through,” Erickson said.

That will happen within seven to 10 days.

Federal officials probe Penn State for possible Clery Act violations
July 17, 2012

As Jerry Sandusky awaits sentencing on 45 child sex abuse convictions, several investigations continue to delve into the role of Penn State University leaders in the scandal, including a probe of whether the university violated a federal campus safety law.

Five days after the former assistant football coach was arrested in November, the U.S. Department of Education launched an investigation into Penn State’s compliance with the Clery Act, which requires prompt public alerts of safety threats, annual disclosure of crime statistics and other steps to protect the campus community.

Federal officials declined to discuss the scope of the investigation. But a Nov. 9 letter from the department to Penn State requested a lengthy list of documents, including logs of all incidents of crime reported to any campus security authority from 1998 to 2011.

I'm just asking, not opining. It's poss alleged coverup happens regardless, but influence of football, Paterno stature at issue for many.

20m Michael Sisak ‏@cvmikesisak
People argue PSU's alleged cover up of sex abuse isn't "football problem." Would longtime coach in a non-revenue sport have had same sway?

‘Death Penalty’ Would Be an Act of Mercy for Penn State Football
July 17 '12

In a PBS interview broadcast Monday night, NCAA president Mark Emmert refused to take “anything off the table” regarding its possible punishment of Penn State University in the wake of the damning Freeh Report.  The results of former FBI director Louis Freeh’s investigation, released last week, concluded that top Penn State officials — including former President Graham Spanier and former head coach Joe Paterno — “repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky’s child abuse from the authorities” in order to “avoid the consequences of bad publicity.”

So the so-called “death penalty” for Penn State football is possible. And though that punishment seems particularly severe — and totally unwarranted, according to Penn State supporters — it’s actually an act of mercy. Plus, the consequences can be very productive, both on and off the field.

The “death penalty” sounds much worse than it is. It’s actually a temporary shut-down of a college football program. In the 1980s, SMU’s football team got a one-year sentence, and took another year off to regroup, because players were being paid from a slush fund. (You can certainly argue that SMU should be lauded, not punished, for allowing revenue-producing players to get a piece of the college football revenue pie). If Penn State sat out, say, this upcoming year, the players could retain their eligibility for next season. So a current senior, for example, would be able to play in 2013. An incoming freshman could still play four years of football at Penn State.

The NCAA could give players the option to transfer without having to sit out a year. Some might take this option, but with practices fast approaching this summer, they might not have time to flee Penn State.

So what would be the fallout from a one-year ban? Yes, the university and its athletic department would take a financial hit. But the players, a year older and stronger, might return next season in better shape.  And they’ll have more time to soak up the college experience, away from the football facilities. Penn State may win more games than they otherwise would have, and the players, hopefully, will be more mature intellectually.

During a year of healing, the university can actually prove that it’s not centered around football. That it can survive, and even thrive, on its own.

Penn State football, and the entire university, is facing a toxic environment this season. In the wake of the Sandusky verdict, and an investigation that pinned the failure to report child sex abuse to authorities, in part, on the “culture of reverence for football,” questions will be following the football team all season: what do you think of how your late coach acted? Will recruits bother coming to State College and dealing with the aftermath? Why are you guys playing?

Why go through with this, when you can temporarily escape the toxic atmosphere, and return to a healthier place?   ::snipping2::

Op-Ed: 'Ban Penn State Football'
July 16, 2012
In an op-ed piece for the Daily Beast, sports columnist Buzz Bissinger writes that an "insidious culture of sports in America" helped cover up the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State. He argues that the NCAA should ban the university's football program for five years.
