Statement by Penn State President Rodney Erickson regarding the Joe Paterno statue
July 22, 2012

Statement by Penn State President Rodney Erickson regarding the Joe Paterno statue

Since we learned of the Grand Jury presentment and the charges against Jerry Sandusky and University officials last November, members of the Penn State community and the public have been made much more acutely aware of the tragedy of child sexual abuse. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to those victims of Mr. Sandusky and all other victims of child abuse. I assure you that Penn State will take a national leadership role in the detection and prevention of child maltreatment in the months and years ahead.

I agree Muffy.

They should have been listening to ESPN all morning like I have.  Not only did they want the statute removed they wanted his name off the Library.

They are saying they will get a years suspension.  Someone called in and said all the money they made over the years that Sandusky was coaching should be donated to the victims.

They should be donating the money they made after he left too because Paterno knew.  They knew about it and covered it up.

This is not a quick fix for Penn State.

I'm pointing my finger at the president and board of trustees.

Joe Paterno's family says statue removal 'does not serve victims' of Jerry Sandusky
By Sara Ganim, The Patriot-News
Published: Sunday, July 22, 2012, 10:50 AM     Updated: Sunday, July 22, 2012, 10:56 AM

The family of Joe Paterno issued this statement in response to the late football coach's statue being removed from outside the Penn State football stadium in State College this morning:
 ::snipping2::

Many comments already.

NerdieGirl
Perhaps the Paterno family could remember the victims but for a moment. Perhaps the Paterno's could imagine how the victims feel during this sad time, knowing that an entire university protected a monster and not them. Perhaps the Paterno's could stop making comments to the press everything, which is clearly an sad attempt to make themselves feel better in this horrific saga. Perhaps, the Paterno's would consider making a comment to their attorney to arrange individual meetings with the each of the victim's attorney's for face-to-face apologies. Perhaps, the Paterno family should remember that it was Joe Paterno who said in an interview that he should have done more and didn't. Perhaps the Paterno family would consider turning their anger surrounding the removal of their father's statue and turn it into empathy for the victims. Perhaps the Paterno's should recognize that while their world has been not easy for them for the past 7 or 8 months, remember how the victims suffered for 10 or more years. Perhaps....

Sadly Coach Joe had it in his power in 1998 to become the biggest hero in the history of college football. If he had called a meeting with Spanier and Curley and said "We gotta fire Sandusky and sic the law on him. Let's figure out a way to do it with minimum damage to the program." The press would have co-operated, Joe, Spanier and Curley would have gotten the credit for exposing a pervert and nothing anybody else said about prior incidents would have made the slightest difference. They might have even been able to do it in 2001. All the kids molested after 98 (or 01) would have been safe. Guys were just too smart and too clever for their own good. Or thought they were.High Heels, imper, Justin Carr, Toku Mei, observingfromafar and 1 more like this.

NCAA source: "Unprecedented" penalties against Penn State
July 22, 2012 8:57 AM

(CBS News) CBS News has learned that the NCAA will announce what a high-ranking association source called "unprecedented" penalties against both the Penn State University football team and the school.

"I've never seen anything like it," the source told correspondent Armen Keteyian.

NCAA President Mark Emmert will make the announcement Monday morning at 9 a.m. at the organization's headquarters in Indianapolis.

Penn State Football: DE recruit Webb decommits from Penn State
July 22 '12

Penn State’s 2013 recruiting class lost one of its commitments on Saturday.

New Jersey defensive lineman Greg Webb withdrew his oral pledge to attend Penn State in favor of North Carolina.

UNC recruiting sites reported Friday that Webb had reopened his recruiting and planned to visit the Tar Heels’ Chapel Hill campus on Saturday.

Webb — a 6-foot-1, 295-pound defensive tackle at Timber Creek High School in Sicklerville, N.J. — indeed visited UNC and committed when his high school teammate Dajuan Drennon also committed to the Tar Heels.

A four-star recruit by Rivals.com standards, Webb was one of three defensive line recruits in the 2013 Penn State class

Penn State will be hit with fines in excess of $30 million as part of penalties expected to be announced Monday by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, a source familiar with the case told CNN Sunday.

The penalties are part of the continued fallout from the sex abuse scandal involving former football coach Jerry Sandusky.

NCAA hands out punishment for Penn State
July 23, 2012

Though he decided against shutting down Penn State's football program in the wake of its child sex-abuse scandal, NCAA President Mark Emmert will announce Monday morning broad and substantial sanctions that will severely affect the program for years, an NCAA official with knowledge of the penalties told USA TODAY Sports.

The announcement will be made at 9 a.m. ET.

The NCAA ruling represented a seminal moment for Emmert, the former University of Washington president whose 20-month tenure has coincided with an unpredictable and turbulent time in college sports.
