They spoke about athletics being the tail that wagged the academic dog.
It's scary that this is the case at many universities and colleges across the nation.

You are so right.  I'd say the vast majority of institutions with athletic programs have allowed the money machines to run the show.  So sad that a dollar causes people to compromise their morals to such degrees.

I am happy about the special rule that allows the players to transfer or finish out their scholarship without playing. Innocent young men that work their asses off only to be pulled into something they had no knowledge or control of.

NCAA penalties for Penn State include $60 million sanction, loss of football wins from 1998 to 2011
July 23, 2012

 ::snipping2::
The NCAA penalties include:

• a $60 million sanction, which is equivalent to the average gross annual revenue of the football program. These funds must be paid into an endowment for external programs preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims and may not be used to fund such programs at the university.

• a four-year football postseason ban and five years probation.

• vacation of all wins from 1998 through 2011.

• loss of 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period.

The career record of former head football coach Joe Paterno will reflect these vacated records, the NCAA said.

Graham Spanier wants to be heard
July 23, 2012

Former Penn State president Graham Spanier wrote a letter to the Board of Trustees on Sunday night excoriating the Freeh report and imploring board members to believe that he did all he could as the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case unfolded over the past 14 years.
Spanier also requested to meet with board members "to set the record straight," according to the letter, which was obtained by ESPN's "Outside the Lines."

According to the Freeh report, Spanier, coach Joe Paterno, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz "failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade." The conspiracy of silence enabled Sandusky, convicted last month of 45 counts of sexual abuse of young boys, to continue to prey on his victims, often on campus or on trips to bowl games, the Freeh report concluded.

Spanier, who has not given a media interview since Penn State's board of trustees fired him as president in November 2011, vehemently disagrees with the Freeh report's findings.

Former PSU President Graham Spanier says he was a child-abuse victim, wouldn't have 'turned a blind eye' to others
By Charles Thompson, The Patriot-News
July 23, 2012

Disgraced former Penn State President Graham Spanier has sent a new letter to the Penn State trustees in which he expresses "great regret about the situation that the entire university finds itself in."

But Spanier, in his three-page letter dated today, also seeks to make clear to the board -- which quickly ousted him after Jerry Sandusky's arrest last November -- that he believes they are getting a biased view from the Freeh Report of his involvement in the scandal.
 ::snipping2::
Unlike Curley and Schultz, who face perjury charges for allegedly lying to the grand jury about what they knew of and did about allegations againt Sandusky, Spanier has not been charged.
But the investigation is continuing and it is widely believed Attorney General Linda Kelly's investigators have been taking a harder look at Spanier's role since receiving e-mails indicating he was involved in the decision to keep the 2001 incident from police.
In those one of those e-mails, Spanier endorsed that move, adding that the only problem would be if Sandusky did not cooperate with the university's guidance and it would then become vulnerable for not reporting.

Big Ten Levies Additional $13 Million Fine Against Penn State Football
By Nate Mink
July 23, 2012

The Big Ten imposed additional sanctions against Penn State, the conference announced Monday.
They mostly mirror those the NCAA handed down, including a postseason ban for four years and a five-year probation period.
Here’s what new:
Penn State is ineligible for its share of Big Ten bowl revenue and must pay that share, which equates to $13 million over a four-year period.
Sally Mason, Iowa's president, said the conference did not consider kicking Penn State out of the Big Ten.
And a TV ban?
"We thought all things taken together," Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said, "that what had been done was sufficient and television and playing of the actual games, along with other privileges of membership should not be impacted."
Earlier Monday, the NCAA announced current team members have the freedom to transfer to any school and immediately be eligible to play.
Penn State cannot restrict any player from pursuing a transfer to any school. The school and player simply must inform the school of their lnterest level. The NCAA is considering waiving scholarship limits in the 2012-2013 season for programs to which these players transfer, provided the schools reduce proportionately in the next year.
 ::snipping2::

Emmert had said earlier that the $60 million fine it levied on Penn State over a five-year period will not impact non-football sports and available scholarship money for those sports.

And while people want to focus on Penn State football, “the fundamental story of this horrific chapter should focus on the innocent children and the powerful people who let them down,” he added.
People who work with abuse victims and survivors couldn’t agree more.

“We want the country to stop talking about football,” says Kristen Houser, a State College native and VP of communications and development for the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR). “This isn’t about a coach’s legacy. It’s not about whether or not we fill up Beaver Stadium. That’s not what this is about. This is about child sexual abuse.”

Penn State's payment of NCAA fine raises question about expanding state Right to Know law
By Jan Murphy, The Patriot-News
July 23, 2012

Penn State has to come up with $60 million during the next five years — at least $12 million a year — to pay the fine imposed on it by the NCAA on Monday.

The NCAA specifically said Penn State can’t take the money from other sports programs the university offers to pay this fine. It said it also can’t take it from academics.

What’s more, the university’s President Rodney Erickson has pledged not to use any of its state funding, which amounts to $214 million this year, or tuition money to pay for expenses arising from the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

Reacting to the sanctions Monday, Gov. Tom Corbett made a point of reminding Erickson of that pledge.

“I also want assurance from Penn State that no taxpayer dollars will be used to pay the $60 million fine imposed on the university,” Corbett said.

So that leads to the questions: Where will the money come from? And how will the public know the source, given the limited requirements that the state’s open-records law places on Penn State?
It took Penn State a few hours on Monday to find the answer to the first question before saying it will use its athletics reserve fund and capital maintenance budget and borrow money internally to pay the fine, which will be directed to preventing child abuse.

As for the second question, if Penn State chooses to live by the letter of the law, the public will have to take the university at its word that those are the sources of the money.

The state’s Right to Know Law does not require any further transparency from Penn State beyond providing its Internal Revenue Service 990 form and a list of the 25 highest-paid employees each year.

“The current law, the way it’s written, makes it very difficult for the public to determine where this money will be coming from, whether it’s taxpayer money, whether it’s donations from alumni. We don’t have access to that information under the current law,” said Melissa Melewsky, media law counsel for the Pennsylvania
Newspaper Association.

That falls well short of where some Republican and Democratic legislators think the school’s transparency threshold should be.

The comments at link were...interesting. Most I agree with, Spanier is creepy and he needs to hire a new PR team if they think BS is going to be believed. I can't even imagine that any parent would choose to send a kid this university when he was in charge...and would still be today but for the truth finally being revealed. I hope to see him in an orange jumpsuit headed for a long time in jail....hoping.
