Jerry Sandusky under investigation for child pornography: report
August 10, 2012

U.S. Postal inspectors are leading an investigation into whether former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky shared child pornography with others, CBS News reported today.

Feds are also looking into whether Sandusky sent "seductive letters" across state lines, according to the CBS report.

Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 counts of child sexual abuse. He has maintained his innocence, including today when attorney Joe Amendola called the latest allegations "ridiculous."

Potential Jerry Sandusky Child Pornography Ring Reportedly Prompts Investigation
August 10, 2012

A federal investigation is underway regarding the prospect of former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky using letters to convince individuals to cross state lines for "sexual purposes," according to CBS News.

The investigation, led by U.S. Postal inspectors, also aims to discover whether Sandusky shared child pornography with others, including some of his sexual abuse victims.

Investigators have been examining a computer of Sandusky's in the probe, and CBS News added that Sandusky may have sent letters to as many as seven individuals, inviting them to Penn State in exchange for gifts and trips.

Feds probe possible Jerry Sandusky child porn ring
August 10, 2012

(CBS/AP) U.S. Postal inspectors are leading a federal investigation into whether former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky shared child pornography with other individuals, CBS News has learned.

Analyzing a computer seized from Sandusky, investigators are also looking into whether he sent "seductive letters" across state lines for sexual purposes. Some of these letters were said to be sent to some of his sexual abuse victims.

CBS News has learned that at the end of 2011, allegations were forward by the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. that Sandusky used the mails to seduce individuals to cross state lines for sexual purposes, with trips and gifts offered. Investigators are looking at 6-7 victims who might have gotten letters.

Also in March of this year, U.S. Postal inspectors were tasked to investigate The Second Mile charity, which was founded by Sandusky. That investigation is on hold, awaiting for documents to be released by the State Attorney.

A source has been told that child pornography was found in at least one of Sandusky's computers. According to the source, there is no evidence that the pornography was of his victims. There is also no mention of a ring or sharing of boys with others. CBS News investigative producer Pat Milton reports that a second source said that none of Sandusky's victims have indicated that there was shared sex with them, Sandusky and any other individual.

The investigation is being carried out of the U.S. Postal Inspectors office in Harrisburg, Pa. and the U.S. Attorney Office of the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

Penn State’s trustees to consider ratifying NCAA penalties over Sandusky scandal response
August 9, 2012

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State’s board of trustees will meet this weekend to consider whether to ratify a consent decree with the NCAA that imposed penalties for how the university handled the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal.

Board chairwoman Karen Peetz told fellow trustees Thursday in an email, which was obtained by The Associated Press, that said there was confusion about how Penn State accepted the sanctions and whether it was the “best course” for the university.

Maybe having a 32 member board of trustees isn't the way to go.  JMHO

PSU Trustees to Hold Emergency Meeting Sunday
August 10, 2012

UNIVERSITY PARK, CENTRE COUNTY - Penn State's Board of Trustees will vote Sunday whether to accept the NCAA sanctions deal. Last month, Penn State president Rodney Erickson personally approved the sanctions.

The board will vote on the NCAA sanctions, similarly to the way they handled in November, Joe Paterno's firing and Graham Spanier's dismissal as president of the university.

When the Jerry Sandusky scandal broke, the university acted immediately and then took a full vote several weeks after Paterno and Spanier were dismissed. Trustees voted by phone and are scheduled to do so again on Sunday.

Nearly three weeks ago the sanctions were imposed by the NCAA claiming that Penn State allowed Jerry Sandusky to abuse boys at Penn State. Erickson approved the sanctions saying it was in the best interest of the university to do so and move forward.

However, several trustees, mostly alumni board members, said they were upset that they were not informed of the sanctions before they were approved.

Shortly after the announcement on Thursday, WTAJ heard from Anthony Lubrano, an alumni trustee, he says he wants to try to make sure all trustees are in person for this meeting.

Penn State is not unique with voting president on board of trustees
August 11, 2012

Graham Spanier repeatedly touted his former position as Penn State president as the best job in American higher education.

Why?

Perhaps it was because he had a board of trustees that appeared to do everything he wanted.

Spanier wanted Penn State to have a law school. He got one. A former trustee recalled Spanier telling, not asking, the board in 1997 that Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center was merging with Geisinger Health System. The board went along with it.

Then when that health care marriage went south two years later, Spanier told the board it was time for a divorce. They accepted that decision as well.

The trustees, who serve for no pay but get perks such as football tickets and tailgate parties, were sharply criticized for that “tone at the top” in the report issued last month by former FBI chief Louis Freeh on the university’s handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual assault scandal.

That tone allowed Spanier to withhold information from the board about those molestation allegations that took place on university property, and the trustees, for the most part, chose to accept Spanier at his word when he downplayed the grand jury investigation into the matter, according to the report.

Sadly, higher education experts said that kind of rubber-stamping university board is not unique to Penn State. But Penn State’s story should serve as a wake-up call for other organizations to reassess the balance of power between their boards and president, they said.

Michael Poliakoff, vice president of policy at the Washington, D.C.-based American Council of Trustees and Alumni, has seen evidence of the out-of-whack governance issue from many corners.

It’s playing out right now at Syracuse University, where the board is only now investigating a child molestation complaint against former assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine that first surfaced in 2005. In an email Chancellor Nancy Cantor sent to the Syracuse community in November, she said the university performed its own investigation into child molestation allegations against Fine in 2005 but found no evidence of such behavior. On the heels of the email, however, Syracuse police spokesman Sgt. Tom Connellan told The Associated Press that the university did not contact police in 2005 regarding the allegation.
Days after she sent the email, Cantor fired Fine, who has denied the accusations.
Poliakoff, a former Pennsylvania deputy secretary of higher education, said he also heard another example last month from Oregon State University President Ed Ray, who chairs the NCAA’s executive committee.

During the news conference following the announcement of Penn State’s NCAA sanctions for what the Freeh report detailed as a university cover-up to protect the football program’s reputation, Ray responded to a question about whether the harsh sanctions were intended to make a statement that the NCAA is in charge of college athletics.

Ray said, “The message is the presidents and the chancellors are in charge.”

“No!” Poliakoff said, reacting to that statement. “The boards are in charge. ... Please read the rule book.”

President-run organizations like the NCAA “that encourage [presidents] to act that way are really doing a terrible disservice, and that’s one of the lessons that Penn State learned,” he said.

Ray, reached on Friday, said Poliakoff misinterpreted his comments.

E-mails are likely to be key to criminal cases against Penn State officials
August 12, 2012

Previously undiscovered e-mails by top Pennsylvania State University administrators formed the basis for the scathing report last month that took the school to task for its handling of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

This week, their impact will be felt for the first time in the criminal case against suspended university athletic director Tim Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz.

Defense lawyers for both men are expected in a Dauphin County courtroom Thursday for the pair's first hearing on charges of perjury and failure to report abuse since last year.

Attorneys Caroline Roberto and Thomas J. Farrell will argue that counts against their clients should be thrown out and that notes from Penn State's internal investigation led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh should be preserved.

But while the e-mails Freeh first made public last month are not mentioned in any of the defense motions, they are chief among a series of developments, including the death this year of head football coach Joe Paterno, likely to change the course of the case.

The e-mails bolster prosecutors' claims that Curley and Schultz worked to cover up allegations against Sandusky in 2001 and later lied about it to a grand jury.

PSU Board Of Trustees Meets To Accept, Finalize NCAA Sanctions
August 12, 2012

Philadelphia (CBS) — It’s rare for the Penn State Board of Trustees to hold a meeting on a weekend, but that’s what will happen Sunday afternoon. And there’s just one item on the agenda.

It’s been over two weeks since the NCAA came down hard on Happy Valley…in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky affair and the way top leaders, including the late Joe Paterno, failed to act.

Now, the board of trustees will meet, by conference call, to accept the penalty assessed to the school; a $60 million fine, a cut in scholarships, a four-year ban on post season football and wiping out 11 years of Nittany Lion wins on the gridiron.

Many expect the board to simply accept the sanctions, but Bill Baldini, President of BAC Sports Management says the matter is not that cut and dry.

@AdamB_PSU This is to say they support it. The other one was to decide if they were going to fight it.

3h Ben Jones Ben Jones ‏@Ben_Jones88
@AdamB_PSU Well, technically they meet once already on the issue when they reviewed Erickson's role in signing the consent agreement

Penn State Trustees Voice Support for Rodney Erickson, Take No Vote
August 12, 2012

The Penn State Board of Trustees did not make a motion or vote during the special meeting via teleconference Sunday, but nearly every trustee pledged support for Penn State President Rodney Erickson's acceptance of the NCAA consent decree.

When it was announced Thursday, the board meeting's intention was to ratify the NCAA consent decree Erickson signed on July 23, acknowledging Penn State's concealment of Jerry Sandusky's rampant child sexual abuse over more than a decade and accepting the sanctions dealt.

Peetz explained the reason for the meeting and the factors that led to no vote being taken in her opening statement, saying that the meeting's intent was to clear up, once and for all, any confusion, questions or concern regarding the NCAA's binding consent decree.

Ratification of the decree is not required, Peetz said, though she was going to give the trustees that option. However, because Ryan McCombie withdrew his appeal of the NCAA sanctions and because of some technical legal issues regarding the university's charter not meshing with the board's bylaws, no vote could be taken via teleconference and within the time frame the board was notified of the meeting.

She reiterated the board intends to comply with the NCAA sanctions and supports Erickson in his decision to sign the agreement.
