'Sweet Caroline' removed from Penn State playlist
August 27, 2012

Saturday will be missing a game-day staple: "Sweet Caroline."

Penn State school officials decided to eliminate the Neil Diamond sing-along hit from the Beaver Stadium playlist because of its lyrics: "Hands, touching hands, reaching out, touching me, touching you."

The song could be awkward in light of the Jerry Sandusky child-sex scandal.

However, Associate Athletic Director Greg Myford said that while the lyrics were discussed, "Sweet Caroline" had been on the bubble for several years because the song has no real connection to Penn State.

Sandusky Victim Sues Penn State for Compensatory, Punitive Damages
August 27, 2012

A young man who testified against Jerry Sandusky sued Penn State last Friday, blaming the university for how its top officials dealt with complaints that the former assistant football coach behaved inappropriately with boys.

The lawsuit filed by the person known as Victim 1 at Sandusky’s trial said university officials made deliberate decisions not to report Sandusky to authorities.

Those decisions were “a function of (Penn State’s) purposeful, deliberate and shameful subordination of the safety of children to its economic self-interests, and to its interest in maintaining and perpetuating its reputation,” the suit said. It was filed electronically in Philadelphia state court Friday night, Slade McLaughlin, a lawyer for Victim 1, said.

Penn State trustees agree on campaign to restore school's image
August 27, 2012

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Pennsylvania State University is going on the offensive to restore its battered image.

After months of reacting to one devastating development after another in the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal, university trustees Sunday charted a proactive strategy to rebuild faith in the campus.

The approach, outlined on the final day of the board's annual retreat, includes implementing several recommendations offered last month in an internal report on the university's handling of the crisis, as well as launching a media campaign to emphasize Penn State's achievements.

Don't make excuses for this young man.  I'm not really sure I would want to see an officer in the army that had taken part in a riot.  I don't care how pizzed off students were in regard to Joe Paterno's firing, destroying a news van wasn't the answer.  Why did this young man have his hands on the hood of the van before/as it was going over?  Caught on film.  Red handed.  Yes, he had a future, but he and only he is responsible for the consequences.  "Penn State Riots" didn't end his dream.  He ended his OWN dream by his own actions.  JMHO Tens of thousands of dollars in damages were done, and Justin Strine contributed to that number imo.

Penn State riot ends aspiring Army officer Justin Strine's dream
August 28, 2012

 ::snipping2::
 What began as a peaceful protest of Paterno's unceremonious dismissal quickly turned ugly as a "riotous mob," as State College police would later call it, threw bottles and rocks, damaged cars, and tore down light posts and street signs.

Strine was in his off-campus apartment when he learned of Paterno's firing. He and a few friends decided to head downtown.

It was a rare misstep in what had been a slow, steady climb toward the officer ranks.

Strine's father is a helicopter pilot and instructor whose 28-year career has taken him to Iraq and Afghanistan. His grandfather is a retired Air Force flight surgeon. His brother and sister, aunt and uncle, cousins — all serve or have served. So it wasn't a surprise when Strine began plotting his own military career as an adolescent, reading the autobiographies of famed Army officers like Norman Schwarzkopf and Colin Powell.

At Penn State, Strine threw himself into ROTC as well as his studies, making the dean's list and spending the summer at Fort Benning, Ga., learning to jump out of airplanes. His goal: to be a pilot like his father.

"He was a good cadet," Jim Strine said.

A good cadet who made a bad decision the night of Nov. 9.

Strine had driven himself and a couple friends to the State College commercial district, where they joined thousands of other protesters. At one point Strine and his friend, Christina Assainte, found themselves in a large crowd moving toward a WTAJ-TV news van, where vandals were pelting it with rocks.

To the rippling chants of "Flip it! Flip it!" two young man approached the side of the van, motioning others to join them, a video recording shows. That set off a frenzied rush toward the van, and within seconds a large group started to push.

A second wave of spectators then pressed toward the front of the van, perhaps to get a better view. Strine and Assainte were in the front of that group.

With the vehicle already on two wheels and going over, Strine placed his palms on the hood. Four seconds later, the van was on its side. But that's all it took for police and prosecutors to charge him with felony counts of riot and criminal mischief — the same charges filed against students who did the actual pushing.

Penn State to give back trophies because of NCAA sanctions
August 29, 2012

 ::snipping2::
Earlier this summer the NCAA fined Penn State $60 million, banned the football program from bowl games for four years, stripped scholarships and vacated the team's wins from 1998 to 2011 following the Freeh Report, which issued a scathing statement about how much the university knew and when.
"Per the NCAA consent decree, all football team trophies won from 1998-2011 are to be returned to the awarding authority and we plan to do so," said Jeff Nelson, assistant athletic director of communications for football at Penn State.

Some of the trophies that the school will have to return include their bowl game wins. Penn State won the Outback Bowl in 1999 and 2007, the Alamo Bowl in 1999 and 2007, the Orange Bowl in 2006 and the Capital One Bowl in 2010.

Sympathy for ‘this poor guy’ Jerry Sandusky and other pedophiles? New York friar blames youngsters who ‘seduce’ priests, coaches
Father Benedict Groeschel: ‘Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster... is the seducer.'

August 30, 2012

 ::snipping2::
 Father Benedict Groeschel’s jarring comments come amid ongoing fallout from child sex abuse scandals that have rocked Penn State and, over the past decade, the Catholic Church.

In some of these cases, children “looking for a father figure” are responsible for the relationship with someone in a position of power -- like a coach or clergy member, Groeschel told the National Catholic Register.

“Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster - 14, 16, 18 - is the seducer," said Groeschel, a founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.

Pressed on the point, Father Groeschel says "It's not so hard to see - a kid looking for a father and didn't have his own - and they won't be planning to get into heavy-duty sex, but almost romantic, embracing, kissing."

The Westchester-based friar -- who maintains a prominent position in the Catholic Church, doing outreach in the Bronx and Brooklyn and appearing on a weekly religious television show -- doesn't think an adult who has a sexual relationship with a child should be punished for a first offense.
 ::snipping2::

 He also has some sympathy for Jerry Sandusky, convicted in June of 45 counts of sexual abuse of boys.

"Here's this poor guy - Sandusky - it went on for years. Interesting: Why didn't anyone say anything?"

Witnesses and victims didn't necessarily see the abuse as a crime, he proposed.

"It was a moral failure, scandalous; but they didn't think of it in terms of legal things."

Father Groeschel apologizes for sympathizing with Sandusky, but won't face discipline
August 30, 2012

 ::snipping2::
The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, the order to which Groeschel belongs, told Metro Thursday they are not planning to reprimand him for the comments.

Groeschel did, however, issue a statement of apology Thursday afternoon:

"I apologize for my comments. I did not intend to blame the victim. A priest (or anyone else) who abuses a minor is always wrong and is always responsible. My mind and my way of expressing myself are not as clear as they used to be. I have spent my life trying to help others the best I could. I deeply regret any harm I have caused to anyone."

 ::snipping2::
The National Catholic Register issued a statement of apology for printing Groeschel's comments and removed the interview from its website.

"Child sexual abuse is never excusable," Editor-in-Chief Jeanette R. De Melo said in a statement. "The editors of the National Catholic Register apologize for publishing without clarification or [challenging] Father Benedict Groeschel's comments that seem to suggest that the child is somehow responsible for abuse. Nothing could be further from the truth."

he Archdiocese of New York condemned Groechel's comments and disassociated itself with them.

"The harm that was done by these remarks was compounded by the assertion that the victim of abuse is responsible for the abuse, or somehow caused the abuse to occur," spokesman Joseph Zwilling said. "This is not only terribly wrong, it is also extremely painful for victims."

Panel: Sandusky fits violent predator status
August 30, 2012

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The former Penn State assistant football coach convicted of sexually abusing boys has been recommended for designation as a sexually violent predator, a legal status that would require lifetime registration with authorities, according to a person who has read an assessment board's report to a judge in the case.

The recommendation from the Sexual Offenders Assessment Board was disclosed to the Associated Press on Thursday by the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the report's confidential nature.

Jerry Sandusky, 68, was convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period. He is jailed awaiting sentencing and maintains his innocence.

Sandusky, given his age and the serious nature of the crimes of which he was convicted, is likely to receive a sentence that will keep him in prison for life. No sentencing date has been announced.

If Groeschel has suffered the type of head injury that results in this kind of mental lapse, then he has no business with access to a website, computer, or any other type of media.  In fact, I'm wondering if there doesn't need to be some type of investigation into his background.  Sounds like his 'blame the victim' argument comes from first hand experience.  jmo

Ohio State T-Shirt About Penn State Causing Campus, Country Outcry
August 30, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Someone may be printing T-shirts with an Ohio State message that makes lights of the Penn State sex abuse scandal.

The shirt, which no one has been able to confirm exists for sale, is causing outcry on the OSU campus and across the country.

The shirt reads, "I'd rather shower at Penn State than cheer for the Wolverines."
 ::snipping2::
Ohio State University officials issued a statement regarding the T-shirts.

"We recently became aware that this T-shirt design is circulating on social media," officials said in the statement. "This is not a university sanctioned T-shirt, and we have no knowledge of where it originated. It is unacceptable and appalling that someone would make light of a tragedy in this manner.'
 ::snipping2::
Ohio State officials said that if any fans wearing offensive shirts try to enter Buckeye games, they will be asked to exchange it for an Ohio State T-shirt before entering. Those who choose not to make an exchange are given the option of a ticket refund.

The T-shirts do not violate Ohio State licensing or trademark rules because it does not contain the words "Ohio State" or "Buckeyes."

The head of licensing said that Penn State or Michigan could have trademark complaints with the T-shirt.

Q: What are Jerry Sandusky’s retirement and benefits?

—Dean Long, Lawrenceville

A: Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach who was convicted of 45 counts of sexual abuse of children in June, received a payout of $148,271 when he retired in 1999. He also began receiving a $58,898 a year state pension, which he has continued to receive in monthly payments of $4,908 through his trial and imprisonment, according to published reports. “Pennsylvania’s pension-forfeiture laws are aimed more at the state’s long legacy of public corruption than crimes of violence,” according to the Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News. Dottie, Sandusky’s wife, would receive about half of his pension upon his death, the paper reported.
