Penn State alumni group releases analysis critical of Freeh report
September 13, 2012

A group of Penn State alumni and supporters who formed an organization shortly after the Jerry Sandusky scandal broke last year, has released a detailed and critical analysis of the internal report the university paid former FBI Director Louis Freeh to complete.

Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship, known better as PS4RS, has been critical of the Penn State board of trustees since it fired iconic coach Joe Paterno in November.

Board of Trustees meeting to be held
September 14, 2012

The Penn State Board of Trustees will meet beginning at 1:30 p.m. today at the Nittany Lion Inn , where they will discuss appropriations, an update on Former FBI Director Louis Freeh’s recommendations and the possible renaming of the Gary Schultz Child Care Center .

Public comment will also be allowed at the meeting for the first time in the board’s history. Seven people are scheduled to speak during the session.

Trustee Peter Khoury  said due to the timing of the meeting, discussing the university’s appropriation for the upcoming fiscal year will be a very important part of the meeting and focal point of the board’s discussion.

Given Penn State’s mission as Pennsylvania’s land grant institution, it is extraordinarily important to discuss the university’s appropriation in order to request an amount that will allow Penn State to remain an affordable option for students, Khoury said.

Board of Trustees meets; President Erickson's remarks
Friday, September 14, 2012

Penn State President Rodney Erickson delivered the following remarks during the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees, held Sept. 14 on the University Park campus.

Good afternoon and welcome. This is the first board meeting of the new academic year, and classes have been in session for about three weeks. I want to say how nice it is to be surrounded by the rhythms of academic life -- papers to be written, quizzes to be graded and department potlucks to be attended. I’ve often thought that one of the main symbols of our academic life -- especially for young faculty or grad students -- is a covered casserole dish.

Perhaps more than any other year, we have all welcomed this return to normalcy and the energy that the students bring to campus.

It seems that at least one administrator thought school looked like so much fun, he decided to return to the classroom as well. Bill Mahon will be stepping down from his position as vice president for University Relations later this year. He has accepted a faculty position in the College of Communications beginning in the upcoming spring semester. Much as we’ll miss him, I couldn’t be more pleased for our students and faculty. Bill will contribute a truly unique set of experiences in public relations and journalism, as well as leadership in internal and external communications and social media.

Notably, Penn State’s social media initiatives were recently ranked No. 1 in the country, according to an assessment of 1,600 schools.

In addition, U.S. News & World Report ranks Penn State among the Top 50 Best National Universities. Our reputational ranking is also outstanding. This year, Penn State moved ahead two places to 36th place. We’ll have a chance to thank Bill later, but let’s take a moment to recognize him now.

Penn State trustees get update on changes
By GENARO C. ARMAS | Associated Press – 42 mins ago
September 14, 2012

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The head of Penn State's Board of Trustees said Friday she understands why many alumni are upset with the findings from the school's internal investigation of the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal and ensuing NCAA sanctions, but she reaffirmed her support for the university president's decision to accept the penalties.

Karen Peetz's comments came as the trustees met at a State College hotel. She told attendees that even if they didn't agree with University President Rodney Erickson's decision to accept the stiff penalties, including a four-year bowl ban and a $60 million fine, they should respect the thoughtful analysis he put into his decision.

The board's agenda includes a report on recommendations from a group led by former FBI director and federal judge Louis Freeh, hired by the university to examine how top officials responded to complaints about Sandusky showering with boys in 1998 and 2001. Peetz said the university hopes to implement recommended changes from Freeh by the end of next year, or reasons for not incorporating any changes.

The Freeh group's 162-page report issued in July suggested a host of changes that addressed the school's culture, administration, legal services, reporting of criminal acts, athletic department, campus police, child safety and even the trustees themselves.

The meeting comes nearly three months since jurors convicted Sandusky of 45 counts of child sexual abuse, and amid calls by lawyers for his victims for the university to take actions that will back up its stated goal of settling their civil claims "privately, expeditiously and fairly."
 ::snipping2::
On Thursday, a group of alumni and others with ties to Penn State issued a report critical of Freeh's methods and conclusion, contending it included lack of disclosure, needed input by key witnesses who were not interviewed and a supposed lack of evidence to back up conclusions about senior university administrators.

The 57-page report by Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship said the university should have examined the role of state and local government officials and Sandusky's charity, The Second Mile. It also said Freeh's approach was incomplete and produced a "grossly flawed" report.

It said the criminal investigations and prosecutions related to Sandusky made it impossible for Freeh's team to interview some critical figures.

A spokesman for the Freeh Group, Tom Davies, declined immediate comment.

Franco Harris Injects Himself Into Penn State Board Of Trustees Meeting, Has Microphone Cut Off
September 14, 2012

A contentious Penn State board of trustees public meeting today turned farce as NFL Hall of Famer and PSU alum Franco Harris attempted to commandeer the microphone despite not having registered to be a speaker.

Harris was repeatedly asked to sit down by board chair Karen Peetz, but Harris continued his rant against the validity of the Freeh report until his microphone was silenced. The above video, from StateCollege.com, was recorded immediately after Harris's exit from the meeting.
