No significant leads in Sky Metalwala case, police say
November 12, 2011

REDMOND, Wash. -- Bellevue Police said Saturday afternoon that they have no significant leads to follow-up on in the search for missing two-year-old Sky Metalwala.

“We’ve had a couple of ‘almosts’ but neither of those panned out to anything,” Bellevue Police Dept. Maj. Mike Johnson said at a 3:30 p.m. press conference.
 ::snipping2::
When asked if police would charge Birykova with neglect for leaving her son alone in a car, a move that would force Birykova to meet with investigators, Johnson said police appreciate the cooperation they've gotten from Biryukova and her attorney and they don't want to jeopardize that.

“At this point, I am not going to say that we're going to rule out that option of making an arrest for a crime that occurred Sunday morning, but at this point we're not going down that road,” he said.

Johnson said his team is examining the issue of criminal investigation versus missing person investigation and he'll have more answers about that on Monday.

The FBI is assisting with international and national support.

“We've been in touch with some of Julia's family members overseas through the FBI, and they've been a big help to us on that," he said.

At Saturday morning's press briefing, Johnson said:

* 140 personnel are involved in today's search. Agencies involved in the search include Bellevue and Redmond police departments, the FBI, King County Search and Rescue, Ski Patrol and Rescue Team, 4x4 Rescue, Explorer Search and Rescue, Northwest Horse Rescue, King County Search Dogs, Seattle Mountain Rescue and the King County Dive Team.

* Bellevue Police have still not heard from Julia Biryukova regarding their request that she meet in person with investigators. Investigators are confident that she remains in the area and that she has no plans to leave the area

* Police are considering the possibility that a family member or close friend may be caring for Sky in an unknown location.

"It's one of the possibilities we have up on the board in the command post," Johnson said. "If there are those that know that, we don't know that, and if there are family members or friends secreting Sky for some reason that we don't know of, we would just implore them to cooperate with us and let us know that so we can put an end to this."

* Investigators have been able to narrow the time period of interest to them. Sky was last seen by a person other than Biryukova two weeks before he was reported missing. Johnson said police have been able to narrow that two-week window of interest, though he declined to offer more specifics.

"We're working on everything available to us to sort of paint a picture of what happened leading up to ... Nov. 6, when Sky disappeared," Johnson said.

Search moves to stranded car location in the search for missing boy

http://www.king5.com/home/Bellevue-police--133770188.html

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Drivers along 112th street NE in Bellevue will be greeted by a contingent of police officers, who are hoping for a break in a missing toddler case.

 ::snipping2::

Sunday they set up a partial roadblock on 112th NE in hopes that those who normally drive this route on Sundays may recall information from a week ago. Besides police officers standing by, big placards with Sky Metalwala's picture and description are posted on the road. Some drivers are stopping to talk, but police would not elaborate on what information they are receiving.

While the search continues on a number of fronts, speculation about possible charges against the mother grows. Bellevue Police Major Mike Johnson saying "on Monday we will be talking to prosecutors and will determine then if anything will happen, but that won't happen until Monday."

Police receive a dozen new tips at search checkpoint

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Police have received a dozen tips from people who stopped at a checkpoint along 112th street NE in Bellevue this morning as they continue to investigate the disappearance of two-year-old Sky Metalwala.

 ::snipping2::

Johnson said police had about 20-30 contacts with people.

“Those contacts with vehicles and pedestrians led to the development of about 12 new tips that we’ll be following up on today,” said Johnson. “Specifically what the tips are I don’t know yet.”  (SIGH)

Sky Metalwala case may turn to criminal investigation today

http://www.king5.com/news/local/sky-metalwala/Sky-Metalwala-case-may-turn-to-criminal-investigation-today-133807223.html

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Police say they will discuss switching their efforts in the case of two-year-old Sky Metalwala from a missing person search to a criminal investigation

There is a chance they could bring in Sky’s mother, Julia Biryukova, for investigation of child endangerment.

Police 'not yet there' on criminal case in Sky's disappearance

http://www.king5.com/news/local/sky-metalwala/Sky-Metalwala-case-may-turn-to-criminal-investigation-today-133807223.html

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Police say they are keeping all possibilities open in the search for two-year-old Sky Metalwala, but they have not yet launched a criminal investigation.
“At some point, it would not be unlikely this would become a criminal investigation, however, we’re not yet there.” Bellevue Police Major Mike Johnson said Monday. “The thing we are lacking is evidence, and as soon as we can have enough evidence to point us one direction or the other, we can flip that switch and call it something else.”

More than 900 tips have come in since Sky disappeared on November 6, but Johnson said none have panned out.
Sky’s mother, Julia Biryukova, has not yet come in for questioning or taken a polygraph test. When asked about the possibility that Biryukova might choose to leave the state or the country, he said police would want her to talk to them first about that.

Sky Metalwala's Mom on Police Radar as Possible Flight Risk?
By CHRISTINA CARON (@cdcaron) and KATIE KINDELAN
Nov. 14, 2011

Washington police investigating the disappearance of 2-year-old Sky Metalwala said they are keeping an eye on the boy's mother in case she tries to leave the country.  ::snipping2::
Police in Bellevue, Wash., have been openly skeptical of Biryukova's story that she was driving her two children to a hospital when she ran out of gas. She allegedly walked with her 4-year-old daughter to a gas station, but when she returned to her car Sky was gone.

"We're not comfortable calling her a person of interest or a suspect. So I suppose if she did intend to make travel plans it would be something we'd want to know about and discuss with her," Bellevue police Maj. Mike Johnson said today.  ::snipping2::
The officer also did not rule out a theory that Biryukova, who is in a bitter custody battle with her husband Solomon, may be trying to smuggle her son out of the country.

"There's a lot of work going on to rule out possible theories of abduction, coercion, the element of custody battle between mom and dad, secreting him outside the country, all of these are viable theories," Johnson said.  ::snipping2::
Over the weekend Metalwala recruited volunteers who passed out fliers, and he has been talking to the media nearly daily pleading for help.

"I'm very blessed that I live in Washington where people are very nice and very grateful to help me," he told "GMA." "I do believe that my son is coming back home."

Biryukova has been speaking to police only through a criminal lawyer she hired following her son's disappearance. She has not responded to requests to speak to investigators voluntarily, Bellevue police Maj. Mike Johnson said at a news conference on Friday.  ::snipping2::

Yes, take note, JI and DB, parents who have nothing to do with the disappearance of their children do what Mr. Metalwala has done; those who have something to hide follow Ms. Biryukova's model.

Sky’s Father Says Disappearance Linked to Custody Dispute
Nov 14, 2011 10:45am

But two days later — and two days before she reported her son missing — Biryukova decided to pull out of the agreement, the Associated Press reports. In a letter sent by her attorney, Biryukova insisted that everyone at the mediation session had been against her and the settlement was unfair, according to Metalwala’s divorce attorney, D. Michael Tomkins.

“Sadly to say, yes,” Solomon Metalwala said today when asked on “Good Morning America” if he believes Sky’s disappearance is related to the custody battle between him and his wife.

“She needs to help and I’m praying that she will,” he said.

“She has had Sky for the last 10 months so I believe that she does know something,” the husband told “GMA.”
 ::snipping2::
Metalwala over the weekend recruited volunteers himself to pass out fliers in his own search, and has been talking to the media nearly daily pleading for help.

“I’m very blessed that I live in Washington where people are very nice and very grateful to help me,” he told “GMA.”  “I do believe that my son is coming back home.”

Police in Sky Metalwala search obtained info from dating website

http://www.king5.com/news/local/sky-metalwala/Police-in-Sky-Metalwala-search-obtained-info-from-dating-website-133842203.html

Police investigating the disappearance of two-year-old Sky Metalwala were in contact last week with the operator of a dating website where Sky's mother, Julia Biryukova -- or someone using her name and likeness -- created a profile in July.

The owner of the site, Brandon Wade, said police contacted him on Nov. 10 asking for any information he could provide on it. Wade's staff turned over to police a list of login information and messages to and from the account.

Wade said the page was created by someone using a Washington state Internet account, but the person created a free profile requiring no payment or proof of identity, so the exact identify of the profile's creator is unknown.

The website -- seekingarrangement.com -- bills itself as offering "a secure place for like-minded Sugar Daddies, Mommies and Sugar Babies to meet each other." Wade said Biryukova, if it was her who created the account, “signed up to be a sugar baby, which means she’s looking for someone wealthy to take care of her.”

On the page, which was created July 25, a person identifying herself as "JB" says she is "looking for financial stability and assistance. I am looking for a successful mentor. I am looking for a REAL man. YOU tell me YOUR 'ideal' arrangement!"  The profile says "JB" expects "US$3,001 - $5,000 monthly."

Looks like she was looking for someone to support her in a grand lifestyle.  Maybe she thought that a two year-old would be a deal breaker.

Father of missing boy makes plea to estranged wife

http://www.kirotv.com/news/news/father-missing-boy-makes-plea-estranged-wife/nFgG9/

SEATTLE — The father of missing boy Sky Metalwala made a plea to his estranged wife while at the KIRO 7 Eyewitness News studios.

Solomon Metawala was live in the studio during KIRO 7’s hour-long special on the search for his son Wednesday night.

When KIRO 7 reporter Alison Grande asked Metalwala about his estranged wife, Julia Biryukova, he turned to the camera and pleaded with her.

“This is your son who’s missing.  It’s our son who is not there.  If you know anything, please let the authorities know so they can go and get him,” said Metalwala.

Biryukova has been conspicuously absent in the search for her son and has only been in contact with police through her attorney.

When Grande showed Metalwala a brief interview KIRO 7 did with Biryukova’s brother, Stan Biryukov, he had a hard time finding the right words.

KIRO 7's David Quinlan approached Biryukov outside his Belltown apartment Wednesday afternoon.

Quinlan: "Everyone is worried about Sky.”

Biryukov: "Yeah of course, but I don't have anything to say.   I don't know what I can do to help. I feel like everything is out there already."

Quinlan: "How's your sister doing?"

Stan: "She's upset with the whole situation, but we are just hoping for the best."

When it was over, Metalwala sat in stunned silence.

“I don’t even have a response.  That’s not the guy I know,” he said.

Metalwala said he's known Biryukov since he was 5 years old.

“He’s very innocent, he’s very lovable,” said Metalwala.

But in the interview, Metalwala said Biryukov seemed different.

“He looks very cold in this,” he said.  “Stan is the one who picked Sky’s name.  I would hope if Stan knows anything, he would think about his nephew.”

Before Metalwala came to KIRO 7, he had been at a long meeting with Bellevue police, who have him advice as to how to move forward, he said.

I can't help but notice that of the few pictures of Sky that JB has posted on her FB and other online albums, the pictures are all of what looks to be group settings:  with family, on a vacation, or in a hotel, etc.  The pictures of her daughter, however, are just of her without brother or any other people.  I don't think JB took pictures of Sky unless there was an audience to view her or perhaps the pictures of Sky were taken by someone else.

I don't know if this says anything about her as a mother, but to me it adds to her being disattached to Sky especially in comparison to her daughter.

And I still want to know if there was a stroller in her car.  I don't go anywhere without one for my granddaughter.  I hardly ever use it, but it has been there since she was born.

Could it be that Julia Biryukova met Solomon Metawala through an international dating site?  Could it be that Solomon was Julia's ticket to America?

Janet,

Who knows, it is possible that she was just looking for a green card.

Look on her Flicke account

http://www.flickr.com/photos/metalwala/

She was uploading photos today.

She also used the service of a Naturopathic doctor instead of a pediatrician to take her daughter to in the pictures entitled Maile Grace's 1st doctor appointment.  http://childhomeopathy.com/physicians&staff.html

I don't know if that makes her responsible for Sky's disappearance but it does make her a strange egg.
