KING CORONER: NATALIE WOOD DEATH CONFIDENTIAL

(nothing jaw-dropping, IMO)

Published on: July 7, 2012
by DICK SIEGEL, NATIONAL ENQUIRER web editor

Famed King Coroner  LA Medical Examiner  DR. THOMAS NOGUCHI reveals the grim details of the last seconds of NATALIE WOOD’s life as she gasped for air in the choppy  waters off Catalina Island.

In his book, “Coroner”, Noguchi recreated the last desperate moments of Natalie’s fight for life.
 ::snipping2::

Even Paul Miller, the Deputy Coroner, who was captaining a ship nearby saw and heard nothing.  He had seen Natalie “buzz to shore in her little rubber dinghy” earlier in the day ---twice – alone.

Interesting!

Natalie Wood Death Case 'Open and Ongoing,' Police Say
July 7, 2012

Jul 07 (TheWrap.com) - Nearly nine months after re-opening the investigation into the death of actress Natalie Wood, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department is still looking into the case, the Sheriff's department said Friday night, noting that their investigation is "open and ongoing."

"We have received many calls from the news media today asking about the status of the Natalie Wood death investigation case," the Sheriff's Department said. "It remains an open and ongoing investigation. There are no further details."

TMZ reported on Friday that the Los Angeles County Coroner had filed papers in late June to change the cause of Wood's death from "accidental" to "undetermined," and that detectives from the Sheriff's Department visited family members on Friday, telling them that bruises on Wood's body were inconsistent with death by drowning. According to the family members, detectives could not say for certain whether Woods' drowning resulted from an accident or foul play.

A spokesman for the coroner's department confirmed to TheWrap that Wood's case is on "security hold," and that the coroner's office is cooperating with law enforcement.

"The case is currently on security hold at the request of the Sheriff's Dept. It is an open investigation and we are cooperating fully with the Sheriff's Department," the spokesman said. "This Department is making no comments at this time."

Natalie Wood’s death certificate amended to reflect lingering questions about her drowning
August 21, 2012

LOS ANGELES — Authorities have changed Natalie Wood’s death certificate to reflect some of the lingering questions surrounding the actress’ drowning 30 years ago.

An amended copy of the actress’ death certificate was entered earlier this month and changes her death from being classified as accidental to undetermined.

The amended document also notes that how Wood got into the water was never “clearly established.”

Authorities Amend Natalie Wood's Death Certificate
August 22, 2012

Natalie Wood's death certificate has been changed to reflect some of the uncertainties and lingering questions surrounding the actress' drowning more than 30 years ago in the Pacific Ocean off Southern California.

The document was amended earlier this month and shifts Wood's death from an accidental drowning to "drowning and other undetermined factors," according to a copy of the certificate obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press.

The amended document also now states that the circumstances of how Wood ended up in the waters off Catalina Island in November 1981 are "not clearly established."

The changes occurred nine months after sheriff's homicide investigators renewed their inquiry into Wood's death shortly before its 30th anniversary.

Natalie Wood Update: L.A. County homicide detectives investigate family boat in Hawaii
September 13, 2012

(CBS) LOS ANGELES - Homicide detectives investigating the 1981 drowning death of Hollywood star Natalie Wood have traveled more than 2,000 miles to Honolulu, Hawaii, twice, to visit the Splendour, the vessel where Wood was last seen alive, according to a new report set to air on 48 Hours this Saturday.

The second trip was made with Dennis Davern, the yacht's then-captain, who says actor Robert Wagner, Wood's husband, was having a fight with the actress before she went missing, and delayed the search for her after she disappeared into the water.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives combed through the ship - testing the various theories of what happened, according to 48 Hours. Their first trip to the Splendour was made last December. 48 Hours was the only news organization there with the detectives as they continue to investigate her death. The detectives made their second trip, this time with Davern, in July.

Saturday's updated edition of 48 Hours Presents Vanity Fair: Hollywood Scandal (10:00 PM, CBS) includes the exclusive footage of police, along with Splendour captain Davern, returning to the boat he hadn't seen in three decades.

Natalie Wood Death: Coroner Releases New Report
January 14, 2013

LOS ANGELES — Some of the bruises found on Natalie Wood's body may have occurred before the actress drowned in the waters off Southern California more than 30 years ago, according to a newly released coroner's report on one of Hollywood's most mysterious deaths.

The case took another twist Monday when officials released a 10-page addendum to Wood's 1981 autopsy that cites unexplained bruises and scratches on Wood's face and arms as significant factors that led to officials changing her death certificate last year from a drowning to "drowning and other undetermined factors."

Officials were careful about their conclusions because they lacked several pieces of evidence for their review.

Bruises on Wood's arms, a scratch on her neck and superficial abrasions to the actress' face may have occurred before Wood ended up in the waters off Catalina Island in November 1981, but coroner's officials wrote they could not definitely determine when the injuries occurred.

The findings have not altered a sheriff's department investigation into Wood's death, which a spokesman described as ongoing.

Natalie Wood's bruises helped coroner decide to change cause of death
January 14, 2013

Some of the bruises on Natalie Wood's body may have occurred before the actress wound up in the water off California's Catalina Island in 1981, leading the Los Angeles Coroner's Office to change her cause of death to "drowning and other undetermined factors."
The actress' death certificate was amended back in August 2012, with the cause of death being changed from an accidental drowning to "drowning and other undetermined factors." But information as to why the change was made was not released until Monday, when the corner's office put out a 10-page supplement to the actress' autopsy report.
The supplement notes that "bruises especially in the upper extremities appeared fresh and could have occurred before (Wood) entered the water." It also says that "the location of the bruises, the multiplicity of the bruises, lack of head trauma, or facial bruising support bruising having occurred prior to the entry into the water."
Wood died after spending an evening on the 60-foot yacht Splendour with husband Robert Wagner and actor Christopher Walken in November 1981.
How exactly Wood, 43 at the time, ended up in the water is also unclear. In part because Wood was found wearing a flannel nightgown and down jacket, and because she is believed to have gone into the water around midnight, the supplement states that "this medical examiner is unable to exclude non-volitional, unplanned entry into the water."
Wood's bruises are described as "superficial skin bruises on the extremities and abrasions on the left side of the face."
"There will be no further statement by the coroner regarding the Natalie Wood death injury," Chief Coroner Investigator & Chief of Operations Craig Harvey told NBC News.

Natalie Wood autopsy not enough evidence to show homicide, sources say
January 14, 2013

Despite new revelations about the death of Natalie Wood contained in an autopsy report released Monday, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department sources said detective are far from ready to classify the case as a homicide.

The coroner's review found that the actress had several fresh bruises and scratches on her arm, wrist and neck that likely occurred before she landed in the Pacific Ocean and drowned.

One law enforcement source told The Times that detectives have been reexamining the case for more than a year and have gathered new evidence. But the evidence still leaves the death as "undetermined," said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case was ongoing.
“This remains an ongoing investigation,” said Steve Whitmore, the Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman. “Yes this is a revelation to the public but this report was written in June 2012.”A sheriff's spokesman said his department has known the contents of the new autopsy for some time.

Whitmore said the Wood investigation became active again in November 2011 when the department received new information and the department asked the coroner to reexamine the case as part of that ongoing investigation.

“As in any death investigation, they remain ongoing until they reach a conclusion,” Whitmore said.

The new report, which was released on Monday, said that it could not verify that those injuries were caused by a fall off a dinghy or attempt to climb back into the boat, which has long been the theory of how she died on Nov. 29, 1981, off Catalina Island.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department re-opened the case in November 2011 and the coroner later changed the cause of death from accidental to drowning and other undetermined factors.

NW allegedly walked into a pole while exiting the restaurant, on the night of her death,
that would account for a facial bruise, in my opinion.  She may have tripped on a step on the boat,(reportedly), could account for an ankles being bruise.

I simply feel her early death was accidently. She was a peanut (no disrespect) if anyone swung at her she would be on the moon.

The Captain made NW a cup of tea, I never heard anything more about the tea. Did she drink it?  What time?

If we could turn back the hands of time, NW. should have fired the Captain, IMO, he was there to protect her and the crew, I would say he neglected his job. IMO

Robert Wagner not interviewed in new Natalie Wood inquiry
January 17, 2013

LOS ANGELES Robert Wagner has declined to be interviewed by detectives in a renewed inquiry into the drowning death of his wife Natalie Wood three decades ago, an investigator said Thursday.
Wagner was interviewed by authorities soon after Wood's drowning in 1981, but the actor is the only person who was on the yacht the night Wood died who has not spoken to detectives as part of the latest inquiry, despite repeated requests and attempts, sheriff's Lt. John Corina said.

Blair Berk, an attorney for Wagner and his family, said the actor had cooperated with authorities since his wife died.

Detectives began re-investigating the case in November 2011. Since then investigators have interviewed more than 100 people, but Wagner has refused and Corina said the actor's representatives have not given any reason for his silence.

The detective's remarks provided new insight into the case that has remained one of Hollywood's enduring mysteries. Earlier this week, coroner's officials released an updated autopsy report that had been under a security hold. It detailed why Wood's death had been reclassified from an accidental drowning to an drowning caused by "undetermined factors."

"Mr. Wagner has fully cooperated over the last 30 years in the investigation of the accidental drowning of his wife in 1981," Berk said in a prepared statement. "Mr. Wagner has been interviewed on multiple occasions by the Los Angeles sheriff's department and answered every single question asked of him by detectives during those interviews."
After 30 years, Berk said, neither Wagner nor his daughters have any new information to add. She said the latest investigation was prompted by people seeking to exploit and sensationalize the 30th anniversary of the death.

Authorities have not identified any suspects in the case.

Wood, 43, was on a yacht with Wagner, Christopher Walken and the boat captain on Thanksgiving weekend of 1981 before she somehow ended up in the water.

Corina said Walken gave a prepared statement, and spoke to detectives for an hour.

Detectives have also interviewed other actors who knew both Wagner and Wood to learn more about their relationship.

Corina said detectives have tried at least 10 times to interview Wagner but have been refused. He said some of the refusals have come from the actor's attorney, and that detectives at one point traveled to Colorado to try to speak with Wagner but were unsuccessful.

Corina said the latest inquiry had turned up new evidence.

"Most of the people we've talked to were never talked to 30 years ago," he said. "We've got a lot of new information."

Asked if the information might lead to criminal charges, Corina said that would be up to prosecutors if they are presented a case.

"All we can do is collect the facts," he said. "We're still trying to collect all the facts."

Corina said new people have emerged with information each time the case is in the news. Detectives would like to interview other people who haven't agreed to talk, he said.
 ::snipping2::
The updated report states the change was made in part because investigators couldn't rule out that some of the bruises and marks on Wood's body happened before she went into the water.

"Since there are unanswered questions and limited additional evidence available for evaluation, it is opined by this medical examiner that the manner of death should be left as undetermined," Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran wrote in the report completed in June.

Officials also considered that Wood wasn't wearing a life jacket, had no history of suicide attempts and didn't leave a note as reasons to amend its report and the death certificate.

My theory is that there was a scuffle between the boys, and she pulled on her jacket, went up top to intervene. No one noticed she either tripped and went off the back, or accidentally got hit on the cheek in the melee and went overboard. Just an accident, but one that did not occur exactly as Noguchi suggested. I sure wish she'd managed to pull herself onto that dinghy...
