As her daughters reached school age, Natalie returned to acting. In 1979 she had three projects awaiting release. The most significant was "From Here to Eternity" (1979), a mini-series film that co-starred Kim Basinger and William Devane. Natalie gave a subtle yet very sexy and powerful performance, and it won her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in 1980. She also starred in the science-fiction disaster, Meteor (1979) with Sean Connery, but it was severely bashed by critics and performed very poorly at the box office. Her next film, the sex comedy, The Last Married Couple in America (1980), with George Segal was also poorly received, despite the praise of her spunky performance. Natalie was unhappy that her film career was ailing because she had been an actress nearly all her life and loved the craft. Determined to re-ignite her film career, Natalie made an unusual choice by moving to North Carolina (something her husband hated her for doing) in late 1981 to make Brainstorm (1983), a compelling science fiction drama in which she and Christopher Walken played a husband-and-wife team of scientists who create a device that can record human thoughts.

Natalie returned to L.A. for an open house Thanksgiving and brought Walken with her. She invited him to join her, Wagner, and boat captain Dennis Davern on a boat trip to Catalina Island. On Saturday, November 28th, 1981, they dined at a restaurant on Catalina where Natalie became very intoxicated. That night, the four of them returned to their yacht, the "Splendor." The rest is a mystery, and the stories about how she ended up in the water have been conflicting. On the morning of Sunday, November 29th, 1981, her body was found floating in a cove. Rumors of foul play immediately surfaced, but Dr. Thomas Noguchi concluded that Natalie attempted to get out of the water into a rubber dingy, but was unable to due to her drunkenness. Ironically, according to her mother, a gypsy once told her that Natalie would die of drowning, which caused Natalie to have nightmares as a child. She was 43 years old. Natalie was scheduled to make her stage debut in "Anastasia" in February 1982 and star opposite Timothy Hutton in a film called "Country of the Heart." She had not completed all of her scenes in "Brainstorm," and a stand-in and sound-a-likes were used to replace her. Since then her death has continued to cause controversy.

Personal life:

Walken married Georgianne Walken (née Thon) in 1969; she is a casting director, most notably for The Sopranos. They live in Wilton, Connecticut and have no children (Walken has stated in interviews that not having children is one of the reasons he has had such a prolific film career).[1] They also have a vacation home on Block Island, Rhode Island. In regard to his villainous roles preceding him when meeting new people, Walken said, "When they see me in a movie, they expect me to be something nasty ... That's why it's good to defy expectations sometimes."[26]

Interesting biography.  IMO.

Christopher Walken,

the Song and Dance Man

Christopher Walken Biography

Young Ronnie

Walken Christopher Walken came into this world as Ronald Walken (named after actor Ronald Coleman) on March 31, 1943. Born the middle child in a family of three boys, he was raised along with his brothers Ken and Glenn, in Queens, New York. Walken still remains a resident of New York City to this day, and for the past couple of decades has owned a brownstone on Manhattan's upper West Side in addition to a home located in the Connecticut countryside.

Christopher's parents were both immigrants who met in the U. S. as young adults and married in 1936. Walken's father, Paul, came from Germany and spent a long career as the owner and operator of Walken's Bakery in Queens. Paul, who passed away in February 2001, was a ferocious worker who regularly made a practice of keeping his young sons busy in the bakery after school. Perhaps that work ethic, instilled so early on, is one of the reasons Walken has said that he is happiest when he is busy working.  More...

Natalie Wood's fatal voyage

 ::snipping2::

Roger Smith, the paramedic who took Natalie Wood's body to shore, claims that her fingers were still pliable and rigor mortis had not yet set in.

Roger Smith: "I think she was at least alive for three of the hours, hanging on that skiff. ...With our equipment and everything...and our expertise we would've found her. And she would still be alive today."

Natalie Wood's Death: 10 Developments During Week 1 of the Reinvestigation
November 20, 2011

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department dropped a bombshell last week when it announced that it was reopening the case of actress Natalie Wood's mysterious death after 30 years.
Investigators revealed Thursday that new information was behind the decision to revisit the events of Nov. 19, 1981, when the 43-year-old actress mysteriously disappeared from her yacht, Spendour, which was floating just off the coast of Southern California's Catalina Island. She was on board with husband Robert Wagner and Brainstorm co-star Christopher Walken.
At the time, authorities ruled her death an accidental drowning, but many have questioned the events of that night, including her sister, Lana Wood, and the yacht's captain, Dennis Davern, who more than a year ago were both calling for the department to reopen its investigation.

Here are 10 significant developments surrounding the case since the news broke
.

See the list and details at link.

(I really think this is an opinion piece, and I'm not sure of the validity of information contained, but it was an interesting read.  I don't usually worry about an occasional typo in an article, but this one has so many errors including misspelled words it appears very amateur imo.  Spell check is not a place in Czechoslovakia.   )

For years I have seen articles which hinted at Robert Wagner having something to do with Natalie's death.

The question I've had was... did anyone in their boat see or hear anything that they weren't speaking about?

I never knew that there was that third man in the boat, and when his book came out the first thing I thought was that he was out to bring the case up just to make a buck.

It seems Robert Wagner was a control freak, whose rage got out of control with help of the booze he was drinking that night. They fought, he threw her out the boat, then didn't want to rescue her.

Now Christopher Walken hired a lawyer, so he knows things may get ugly.

Woman Claims She Heard Natalie Wood’s Cries for Help on Night Actress Died

But now California resident Marilyn Wayne, who was boating in the same area that night — approximately 40 yards away from the Splendour, the yacht upon which the actors were staying — said she heard a woman’s cries for help.

 ::snipping2::

“While listening to the cries, we called the harbor patrol but no one answered. Then we called the sheriff’s office in Avalon, 12 miles away, and whoever answered told us a helicopter would be sent, but it did not come. We heard loud music coming from somewhere, so thought there was a party on a nearby boat,” the statement said. “Then I heard a man’s voice, slurred, and in aggravated tone, say something to the effect of, “Oh, hold on, we’re coming to get you,” and not long after, the cries for help subsided, but we heard the cries for up to 15 minutes. We returned to bed, terribly disturbed

So sad.

Did Ms. Wayne have a Fog Horn on her boat?

How could you go to bed, when someone for Fifteen minutes, is crying out for their life?

It was not Ms Wayne's fault that NW was in the water, but she was the sane mind on the water, that night, IMO.
She could actually go to sleep?  If she had a fog horn, a bell, air horn? She could have bought attention,to the
dire situation. Sad

How do you sleep when you know what you heard?

IIRC, boats are supposed to have some sort of working bell or whistle.  I know I couldn't go to sleep if I even thought I had heard a cry for help, let alone someone crying out for help for 15 minutes.  Did she not have a marine radio?

Although the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. says Robert Wagner is not a suspect, it's pretty clear -- as the last person to see Natalie Wood alive -- he's the target of the probe.

Under California law, even if Wagner accidentally pushed Natalie into the dark water ... the most he could be charged with is involuntary manslaughter. But here's the problem -- there's a statute of limitations of 3 years for that crime, so prosecutors would have had to file charges 27 years ago. Ditto voluntary manslaughter, which has a statute of limitations of 3 years.

The only crime for which anyone could be prosecuted is first degree murder, because there's no statute of limitations. Remember, there are no possible witnesses other than Robert Wagner. Short of a bizarre confession, D.A. sources say there's no chance of a prosecution. BTW, there's a 6-year statute of limitations on second degree murder.

As for why the Sheriff is investigating the death ... one D.A. source said, "It's an exercise in futility. I just don't get it."

Robert Wagner did not confess back then, chances are he will not do it now.

That D.A. should not be so pessimistic. I think he is sending the wrong message to other wife-murderers wannabes.

-----

Anyway, I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Robert Wagner's new wife after Natalie.

Wikipedia says that Jill St. John and Robert Wagner were a couple in early 1982, though they had met when she was 18.

Doing some math... Natalie Woods died November 29, 1981.
Still doing math... Jill & RJ were a couple in early 1982.

How much mourning time did Robert Wagner have between these two women?

Natalie Wood had a photographic memory and always knew her lines. Because she always got scenes right the first time, she got the nickname "One Take Natalie."

http://blogs.amctv.com/movie-blog/2011/12/story-notes-trivia-miracle-on-34th-street.php

ME:

I do know if this is a matter of opinion, that NW had an photographic memory.  I think we would have known before
now, if she did.  If she did have a photographic memory, it explains why she needed to have a script for a movie
or play.

She must have felt lost, without some sort of script to study, to keep her mind fresh and challenged.  So sad, if only
she stayed home with the children, and created a skit for the family.  Perhaps drinking hot chocolate, may have been a
better idea.

I remember this very good like it was yesterday.
People thought (at that time) there was a fight.
Natalie, some of the time fell in love with her leading men.
The fight would of been over that, with Christopher.
To me, at that time, I always wondered why in the world Robert would of let him on the boat.

Author Marti Rulli Revisits Natalie Wood Media Frenzy
April 10, 2012

Although the recently re-opened investigation into the tragic death of actress Natalie Wood is still ongoing, the author who sparked it all, Marti Rulli, says she has finally been able to get back to a normal day-to-day in New Jersey. She still thinks about the late actress every day and remains grateful that the shocking events that took place off Catalina Island on Thanksgiving weekend 1981 are finally getting their proper investigative due.
“From everything I know, the case is still alive and very much being investigated,” Rulli tells FishbowlLA via telephone. “It will take the time that the case deserves. I trust that they will not close up this case without interviewing the people who were on board.”

“I don’t know the exact status of the LA County Sheriff’s investigation, or when they’re interviewing the other people involved,” she continues. “What I do know is that they had said they intend to interview everyone who had information about the case.”

Natalie Wood's cause of death changes from 'Accident' to 'Undetermined,' on death certificate, report says
July 6, 2012

Natalie Wood's death certificate was changed in late June from "Accident" to "Undetermined," TMZ reported.

According to TMZ, the L.A. County Coroner filed the documents late last month and informed Wood's family of the change.  Detectives said the change was made in part due to bruises on Wood's body that were inconsistent with death by drowning.

The investigation is still active.
