Matt Govendo blasts Fine's accusers on his Twitter account

November 28, 2011

Matt Govendo has taken to Twitter to slam the growing critics of his aunt and uncle, Laurie and Bernie Fine, the couple at the center of the Syracuse University sexual abuse scandal.
In the fallout of Bernie Fine’s firing on Sunday amid the release of a tape-recorded phone call between Laurie Fine and Bobby Davis — who alleges he was sexually abused by Bernie Fine and claims to have had a sexual relationship with Laurie Fine — Govendo went to the media and Twitter in support of his relatives.
 ::snipping2::
Laurie Fine was to have addressed the explosive contents of the tape, but told local TV affiliate WSYR/Channel 9 that she would not release a statement after all.

Govendo, however, has been anything but silent.

In a Nov. 21 tweet, Govendo (@mgovendo) wrote, “ive known both parties for 26 years...no way in hell bernie is capable of doing anything like that.”

Later, on Thanksgiving, Govendo ripped the local district attorney and Syracuse police over information the DA (William Fitzpatrick) claims police leaked in the Fine investigation.

“(Expletive) that the lack of respect from DA/SPD to one another is taken away the PURE fact that there are 3 people lying for personal advancement,” tweeted Govendo, referring to the three alleged victims who have come forward. Govendo, who has a photo on his Twitter account that shows him posing with former Syracuse star and current Knick Carmelo Anthony, could not be reached for comment.

Alleged sex abuse victims suing Syracuse, Boeheim

Two men who accused former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine of sexual abuse have filed a defamation lawsuit in a New York court against the university and its longtime head basketball coach, Jim Boeheim, their attorney announced Tuesday.

Bobby Davis and his stepbrother, Mike Lang, have alleged that Fine repeatedly abused them when they were children.

The lawsuit comes days after Boeheim apologized for accusing Lang and Davis of fabricating their allegations. "I believe I misspoke very badly in my response to the allegations that have been made," he said. "I shouldn't have questioned what the accusers expressed or their motives."

Attorney Gloria Allred told reporters that Boeheim's subsequent apology was "too little, too late."

"Over the past 35 years, Boeheim had hundreds, if not thousands of opportunities to observe Fine's relationship with boys," Allred added.

Davis told CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" later Tuesday that he hopes his actions encourage other young victims of abuse to come forward. "I am coming forth to (help) give children the courage to talk. I was afraid all my life to talk about this," he said.

Fine has maintained his innocence, saying the allegations are "patently false in every aspect." He has not been charged with a crime.

Federal prosecutors oppose unsealing Fine documents
December 14, 2011

A federal prosecutor today asked a judge not to unseal documents in the Bernie Fine child molestation investigation.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Clymer asked U.S. Magistrate Andrew Baxter not to grant the request of four media organizations to unseal the three applications that the U.S. Secret Service submitted to get warrants to search the home, office and bank safe deposit boxes of the former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach.

Unsealing the applications would hinder the federal investigation, cause embarrassment to people who have come forward to police, and in one case could jeopardize the safety of a source, Clymer wrote in a six-page letter to Baxter.

Disclosure "will jeopardize the government's ongoing investigation into the sensitive area of child abuse and molestation," Clymer wrote. Although some of the information in the applications has already been made public, some of it has not, he said.

Unsealing the applications could "disclose to the target the extent and nature of the government's information at the time it sought the warrants and lay bare its investigative steps," Clymer wrote.

Fourth man accuses Bernie Fine of sexual abuse
December 15, 2011

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) – A New York prison inmate has come forward with accusations that he was sexually molested by former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine as a child, starting more than 40 years ago, according to a report published Thursday.
The Post-Standard of Syracuse reported (http://bit.ly/ul8vdy ) that 56-year-old Floyd VanHooser told the newspaper Wednesday that Fine began sexually abusing him when VanHooser was 14 years old.
 ::snipping2::
VanHooser told the newspaper Syracuse police interviewed him last month at Elmira Correctional Facility, where he was being held before being moved to Clinton in northern New York. He said police told him that his former case worker contacted them and told them they should talk to VanHooser about his relationship with Fine.

VanHooser told the Post-Standard that he was orphaned before he was 13 and lived with Fine on and off for nearly 40 years. He said the sexual contact continued over four decades

Fourth man to accuse Bernie Fine of sex abuse claims there are other victims
December 16, 2011

he fourth man to accuse former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine of sexual abuse claims there are other victims who have yet to come forward.

In an interview with The Post-Standard published on Thursday, Floyd VanHooser said that the abuse started 42 years ago when he was 14 years old, after Fine took him in as an orphan.

Syracuse Police interviewed VanHooser, who is serving a 16-years-to-life sentence in prison, last month. VanHooser said he told police about three incidents with Fine in 1998, 2001, and 2011, when Fine pressured him to perform oral sex and later gave him money.

According to sex-abuse victims' advocate Robert Hoatson, who met with VanHooser in prison on Monday, VanHooser said there are more alleged victims.

"He said there are at least two others that he knows about," Hoatson, the founder of Road to Recovery, an organization that counsels sex-abuse victims, told the New York Daily News.

Last week, Onondaga Country District Attorney William Fitzpatrick told reporters at a news conference that, "there simply is no victim No. 4."

According to Hoatson, Syracuse Police told VanHooser something different.

"Syracuse police told him he was credible," Hoatson told USA Today.

After the news conference, there were questions by legal experts about how Fitzpatrick handled the news conference, with some experts saying he overstepped his boundaries. Now others are questioning about Fitzpatrick's statements about the fourth victim.

"What this says to me is that District Attorney Fitzpatrick wanted to put a nice clean bow on a case," Hoatson told the Daily News. "How he can say a human being doesn't exist is beyond me. He basically said Bob Hoatson made this up."
