Nevada governor declares emergency from wildfire
November 18, 2011

(Reuters) - Nevada's governor declared a state of emergency on Friday because of a wildfire burning outside of Reno that has destroyed 20 structures and forced the evacuation of 9,500 people.

The Caughlin Fire broke out overnight and has already blackened more than 400 acres as it moves toward heavily populated areas said Michele Anderson, spokeswoman for Reno Mayor Bob Cashell.

Governor Brian Sandoval requested and received approval for federal assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), he said in a written statement.

RENO, Nev. - Police in Reno went house to house in the middle of the night, pounding on doors and telling residents they had to evacuate as a roughly 400-acre blaze raged in rough terrain, destroyed homes and injured some people. At least one man is dead, after suffering a fatal cardiac arrest while evacuating.

Nearly 10,000 people from the edge of the city have been evacuated from the path of the massive wildfire and the local fire chief said the blaze could rage through Saturday.

Officials said 20 homes have been lost, several people have suffered smoke inhalation and one person suffered a cardiac arrest in the fire, which started about 12:30 a.m. in the Caughlin Ranch area and glowed orange on the hillsides through the night. Winds gusting in excess of 60 miles per hour didn't help efforts.

Firefighters don't know what caused it.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has declared the fire a major disaster.

Ninety schools were closed for the day to clear the roads of school traffic and make way for emergency workers. About 125 crew members are fighting the blaze, dubbed the Caughlin Fire.

Two high schools are being used as shelters for hundreds of families who fled their homes. Officials have set up shelter sites for pets and livestock, and school buses are on standby to help with evacuations.

Reno wildfire kills 1, prompts evacuations
November 18, 2011

CNN) -- The city of Reno, the rest of Washoe County and all of Nevada declared states of emergency Friday as a deadly wildfire swept through western Nevada, the governments announced on their websites.

One person has died as a result of the Caughlin Ranch Fire, Washoe County reported at 8:45 a.m. Friday. In addition, at least 20 structures had been destroyed by the blaze, which at that point had consumed more than 400 acres.

Firefighters are trying to protect other structures, but high winds are causing problems, Reno Fire Chief Michael Martinez said Friday. The National Weather Service forecast sustained southwest winds of 35 mph throughout the day, with gusts as strong as 55 mph.

Reno noted on its website that the local 211 information phone lines are overloaded, advising people to call 775-337-5800 instead for more information.

Galena High School in Reno has been set up as an evacuation center, and if that fills up, Damonte Ranch High School will serve the same purpose. The city of Reno estimated Friday that at least 9,500 people have been asked to leave their homes.

Animals in danger can be transported to the Livestock Events Center in Reno to ensure their safety, the county said.

All Washoe County schools in the Truckee Meadows area are have been closed.

Moreover, all residents in the fire zone and vicinity were urged to stay indoors due to deteriorating air quality, the Reno government noted.

Reno Threatened By Wind Whipped Wildfire

High winds are fanning a Nevada wild fire that is threatening the city of Reno and has chased 10,000 people from their homes.

About 400 firefighters are battling the blaze, which leaps to new locations as wind gusts up to 70 mph send embers off to ignite fresh fires. The heavy smoke and the wind gusts have grounded rescue helicopters.

The winds are expected to remain strong for the next 2 hours and Fire Chief Mike Hernandez said he expects the fires to persist through Saturday.

The blaze, which erupted about 12:30 a.m., has scorched over 2,000 acres, destroyed 30 homes and sent hundreds of families through the eerie glow and smoky haze to shelters. Several people have been injured, and at least one death has been reported, that of a man who suffered a heart attack as he fled the flames during the police-led evacuation.

Gov. Brian Sandoval and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have declared the fire a major disaster.

"The people are in a state of shock and are hanging in there," said Sandoval.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though the weather has even made the safety of the emergency responders a concern.

Caughlin Fire: Blaze's forward progress stopped, Reno chief says
November 18, 2011

Firefighters have halted the forward march of the wind-stoked Caughlin Fire on the outskirts of Reno, officials said Friday afternoon, potentially sparing thousands of houses and clearing the way for evacuees to return home Saturday.

In 12 hours, the Caughlin fire destroyed or damaged 25 homes and chewed through 2,000 acres, clogging the sky with orange flames and smoke. A 74-year-old man fleeing his home died of heart failure, officials said, and more than a dozen people were transported to hospitals for heart and respiratory problems.

Though gusts of up to 65 mph are expected to batter the area until 4 p.m. Friday, Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said, crews had stopped the conflagration’s progress. The blaze had chased nearly 10,000 people from their homes, closed dozens of schools and prodded Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval to declare a state of emergency.

Reno officials hope for wind relief as wildfire rages
November 19, 2011

(CNN) -- Authorities expect dwindling winds Saturday to help in their fight against a wildfire that tore through northern Nevada, damaging up to 25 homes.

As of Friday night, authorities said the Caughlin Ranch Fire was "0%" contained. It was unclear how many structures have been destroyed.

The fast-moving wildfire was spurred Friday by ferocious gusts of up to 85 mph. Winds on Saturday are expected to reach about 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Officials say power lines likely caused Reno fire
November 19, 2011

RENO, Nev. (AP) – Fire investigators in Reno say arcing power lines likely caused the wind-fueled wild fire that destroyed 15 homes and damaged at least 40 more.

Reno Fire Chief Mike Hernandez says the 2,000-acre fire is now 65 percent contained.
 ::snipping2::
Hernandez says there's no official cause yet, but all signs point to the power lines. He says investigators ruled out the possibility that teenage partiers or a homeless campfire was to blame.

Fire officials say 32 homes destroyed in Reno fire; Gov. Sandoval surveys damage
November 19, 2011

ENO, Nev. — The estimated number of homes destroyed in a wind-fueled wildfire more than doubled on Saturday to a total of 32, but Gov. Brian Sandoval said it’s a miracle scores more weren’t lost.

A re-evaluation of the 2,000-acre burn on Saturday found much more destruction and damage than initially reported, Reno Fire Chief Mike Hernandez said.
