NYC police arrest 27-year-old terror suspect
November 20, 2011

Mayor Bloomberg and other New York City officials held a news conference tonight to announce the arrest of a terror suspect. On Deadline live blogged the meeting at City Hall with reporters.

Updated at 8:02 p.m. ET:

Terror suspect Jose Pimentel, arrested by New York City police on Saturday, appeared to have been set off by the Sept. 30 death of al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen by a U.S. drone strike, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says.

Law enforcement had to act quickly to stop Pimentel because he was in the process of making a bomb device, Kelly says.

"He was drilling the holes and it would have been not appropriate to let him walk out the door with the bomb, so a decision was made to act quickly," Kelly says.

At one point, Pimentel considered changing his name to Osama Hussein after his heroes, Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, Kelly says.

Updated at 7:55 p.m. ET:

Terror suspect Jose Pimentel is charged with conspiring to build a bomb for terror purposes and possessing a weapon with the intent of waging a campaign of violence, District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. says.

On his website, Pimentel discussed the duty of every Muslim to wage war against the west, Vance says.

'Lone wolf' terror suspect arrested in New York
From Deborah Feyerick, CNN
November 20, 2011

New York (CNN) -- Authorities have arrested a man they claim was plotting to detonate pipe bombs in and around New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday night.

The intended targets of Jose Pimentel, 27, were U.S. military personnel who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as U.S. postal facilities and police stations, according to Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

The suspect was described by Bloomberg as an "al Qaeda sympathizer," though he is not believed to have ever made direct contact with anyone in the organization.
He was arrested at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in an apartment in Washington Heights, a neighborhood in northern Manhattan, as he began to drill holes in the would-be pipe bomb, Kelly said. While authorities had monitored him for over two years, they decided to move quickly for fear that device may soon explode, according to the commissioner.

FBI reveals doubts over US 'terrorist'
November 22, 2011

As authorities in New York touted their success in foiling an alleged terror plot, new questions were raised about the seriousness of the threat, with reports that the FBI declined to investigate the suspect because it did not consider him an effective terrorist.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the arrest of Jose Pimentel, 27, marked the 14th time that a conspiracy aimed at harming New Yorkers had been thwarted since the 9/11 attacks of 2001.

He and the police chief, Raymond Kelly, described Mr Pimentel as a "lone wolf", who was driven by his sympathies with al-Qa'ida to plot to attack targets. They said he had been assembling a pipe bomb when he was taken into custody. He appeared in court accused of plotting to blow up police and US troops returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sources at the FBI, however, suggested the agency had twice declined to assist in the investigation because it hardly considered him a serious threat, owing to his emotional and mental problems. "He didn't have the predisposition or the ability to do anything on his own," one FBI source told the Associated Press.
