FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A University of Arkansas student-athlete, Garrett Uekman, was found unconscious and unresponsive in his dorm room Sunday morning. Emergency medical crews were not able to revive him and he was pronounced dead at Washington Regional Medical Center on Sunday afternoon.

Uekman, 19, from Little Rock, Ark., was a sophomore majoring in applied exercise science in the College of Education and Health Professions. He was a redshirt freshman on the Arkansas Razorback football team, where he played tight end. He played in nine games during the current football season.

University Police Lt. Matt Mills said that the cause of Uekman’s death is not known at this time, but there are no suspicious circumstances.

Uekman was last seen playing video games by a roommate at about 10:15 a.m. CST and appeared to be in good health. Another roommate found him unconscious about an hour later. Uekman was in cardiac arrest when responders arrived and was pronounced dead at approximately 12:10 p.m.

“Garrett Uekman was a special member of our family, and we are all saddened by his passing,” said football coach Bobby Petrino. “His loss is a terrible shock, and it makes you realize how precious life is. Garrett was a great teammate and loved being a Razorback. My sympathies are with his entire family during this incredibly trying time, and I share in their grief. Our team will honor and show our respect to Garrett.”

I was just reading about a MLB player that was stabbed to death by his brother.  I swear the world is going nuts.   My s-i-l was telling me about a coworker's hubby that died of a massive heart attack in front of his high school class on Thursday.  Those kids are in shock.  He was a favored coach and had worked there for over 20 years.

I guess its just hard to understand how folks that should be the healthiest among us are the first to go.

Muffy thanks for posting! This week has been so sad! Such a good guy that was loved by all to be gone so suddenly and unexpected has been a shock. Results of prelim autopsy has shown an undetected enlarged heart! Toxicology results negative for drugs. Sure puts things in perspective!

YW the cuz.   It truly has been a sad week.  I hadn't seen updates about Garrett's preliminary autopsy.  An undetected enlarged heart.  He was so young, and it seems he was loved by many.  My sincere condolences to his family, friends and team mates.   an angelic monkey

Arkansas teammates honor late TE Garrett Uekman with black 88 on jerseys
November 25, 2011

BATON ROUGE, La. — Arkansas tight end Austin Tate honored late teammate Garrett Uekman by switching his jersey number from 87 to 88, while members of the coaching staff wore black ribbons with the No. 88 on their shirts for the No. 3 Razorbacks’ game against No. 1 LSU on Friday.

The 19-year-old Uekman, a redshirt freshman, died last Sunday and a coroner has determined that his death was caused by a previously undetected heart condition.

Service honors fallen UA athlete
December 2, 2011

Family, friends, teammates and coaches gathered outside Christ the King Catholic Church on Monday, released red and white helium-filled balloons, raised their hands and called the Hogs.

It was a final tribute to Garrett Uekman, the Arkansas Razorback football player who grew up in Marche. He was remembered during a funeral service in West Little Rock. Uekman’s dream was to play for the Razorbacks, one the 19-year-old fulfilled before dying suddenly on Nov. 20 because of an undiagnosed heart condition.

“Some people put their dreams away,” said Msgr. Lawrence Frederick, the rector at Catholic High School for Boys. “Others take their dreams and work at them. This is what Garrett did.”

More than 1,000 mourners attended Uekman’s funeral, saying goodbye to the Arkansas tight end more than a week after he was found unresponsive in his dorm room on campus. The Little Rock native was remembered as a great student and athlete at both Arkansas and Little Rock Catholic High during the hour-long mass.

Garrett Uekman, 'an amazing soul,' laid to rest
Razorback player, 19-year-old Catholic, called 'serious student and dedicated athlete'

December 3, 2011

Mourners release dozens of red and white helium-filled balloons and call "Woo Pig Sooie" following the Nov. 28 funeral Mass at Christ the King Church in Little Rock for Garrett Uekman, a tight end for the Arkansas Razorbacks. The 19-year-old died suddenly Nov. 20.

The Catholic community in Little Rock and Fayetteville mourned with the state at the death of University of Arkansas football player Garrett Uekman.

The 19-year-old member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in North Little Rock played in a televised game against Mississippi State Nov. 19 at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, the same venue where he played for Catholic High School. He returned to Fayetteville that night, but the next morning he died from an undiagnosed heart condition.

As a testament to what classmates, friends and family members thought of Uekman, a string of candlelight vigils, rosaries and prayer services were held in the Little Rock area and Fayetteville before the Nov. 28 funeral Mass. On Nov. 25, Uekman was remembered during one of the Razorbacks' biggest games in decades, a loss to No. 1 Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Stickers, posters and arm bands with Uekman's jersey number 88 and "W88 PIG S88IE" were often seen as memorials to the player.
The funeral was moved to Christ the King Church in Little Rock to accommodate the more than 1,100 people, including coach Bobby Petrino, a member of St. Joseph Church in Fayetteville, UA officials and football players.
