Greg Halman Dead: Mariners Outfielder Killed In Rotterdam
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands — Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death early Monday and his brother was arrested as a suspect, Dutch police said.

Rotterdam Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels said police were called to a home in the port city in the early hours of the morning and found the 24-year-old Dutch player bleeding from a stab wound.

The officers and ambulance paramedics were unable to resuscitate Halman.

Wessels said the officers arrested Halman's 22-year-old brother. She declined to give his name, in line with Dutch privacy rules.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Police say an argument about loud music could be the reason Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death.

Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels tells The Associated Press that loud music "appears to be the reason the victim walked downstairs," but police are still trying to piece together what happened after that.

Police say they are still interviewing the brother of Halman as a suspect in the death of the 24-year-old Dutch baseball player, who was killed in the early hours of Monday morning at an apartment in Rotterdam

November 29, 2011

Seattle Mariners prospect Greg Halman was laid to rest Monday in front of thousands in his native country of the Netherlands.

More details of Halman's death eight days ago have emerged, as reported by the Seattle Times.

Halman's younger brother, Jason, 22, was arrested in the stabbing, but has yet to be charged. Police are holding him in solitary confinement for at least two more weeks.

According to the family, Jason was experiencing psychological and emotional issues prior to the killing. Jason, also an aspiring baseball player, had been hearing "voices" in his head and was even given a referral to see a specialist.

The Times does not attribute details of the stabbing to any specific associates of Halman. It reports that on the night of the stabbing, Greg, 24, was home sleeping with his girlfriend, according to the Times. Jason returned to Greg's apartment late in the evening without a key. Jason woke Greg up to open the door.

An altercation ensued when Jason began blasting music. It is believed he played loud music to block out the voices in his head.

Greg was stabbed once his throat, severing his catotid artery.

According to the newspaper, the family said Jason doesn't even realize that his brother is dead.

Greg Halman was laid to rest on Tuesday in Driehuis, a small town in North Holland, a week after the young outfielder was stabbed to death in an apartment in Rotterdam.

The Rev. Keith Louis conducted the service in both Dutch and English so that the Mariners' guests could follow along.
Halman, 24, was buried in the Mariners uniform bearing the No. 56 he wore this past season as a rookie. The native of the Netherlands spent his entire career in the Mariners organization after signing as an international free agent in 2004, and played 44 games with the Major League squad over the past two seasons.

Halman's younger brother, 22-year-old Jason, is being held by Dutch police on suspicion of murder or manslaughter after an early-morning incident on Nov. 21 in the apartment building where the two lived.
