Mom Arrested After Toddler Found Abandoned in Woods
November 26, 2011

PIERSON, Fla. –  The mother of a 1-year-old girl found in a wooded area in Florida's Volusia County and the man who reported her missing have been arrested in the child's disappearance.

A sheriff's office spokesman says 23-year-old Carlos Rivera and 30-year-old Leah Wiley were arrested Saturday.

Deputies, a helicopter and bloodhounds had searched for Wiley's daughter Lupita Gonzalez for hours. A missing child alert was also issued.

Deputies said Rivera and Wiley went to a party with the child Thursday night.

According to a release, Rivera told police he paid Wiley to have sex with him, but became upset when they were interrupted.

Rivera then left the party with Wiley's daughter at 7 a.m. Friday.

Investigators said Rivera abandoned the girl in a field before catching a ride back to Putnam County.

SEVILLE -- A 1-year-old girl was found alive Saturday, more than 24 hours after a man kidnapped her because he was interrupted while having sex at a party with the girl's mother, authorities said.

Lupita Gonzalez was found about 3:20 p.m. Saturday and taken to a nearby hospital, Volusia County sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.

"We're extremely relieved that the child was found," he said. "Everybody did a fantastic job trying to locate her."

Authorities were first alerted about 5 a.m. to Lupita's disappearance after a man, later identified as 23-year-old Carlos Rivera, called 9-1-1 to report the child missing, Davidson said.

According to a news release from the Sheriff's Office, Rivera initially told authorities he remembered a little girl was at the party held Thursday night at 305 Lawrence St., Seville, and "now he doesn't know what happened to her."

"What he was saying wasn't making sense, but we knew it was something serious," Davidson said.

A massive search was launched and a special Child Abduction Response Team combed the surrounding area -- along with bloodhounds, a sheriff's helicopter and a boat that was deployed into a nearby body of water.

Later during questioning, though, Rivera told investigators he had paid the child's mother, 30-year-old Leah Wiley, for sex while at the party where illegal drugs were also consumed, Davidson said. But Rivera got mad when they were interrupted after Wiley was called to another room.

Rivera told deputies he left the house with Lupita about 7 a.m. Friday. He and the child crossed U.S. Highway 17 and a set of railroad tracks before Rivera started getting worried that he might get in trouble for taking the child, Davidson said. He abandoned the child in a field near a wooded area and got a ride to Putnam County, Davidson said.

Wiley told authorities she suspected Rivera had taken the child but did not report her missing because she didn't want the child's father to find out she had sex with Rivera, Davidson said.

Lupita was found under a bush in a field -- about two miles from the house where the child was taken -- after Rivera told sheriff's investigators the general location where he left the child.
