Portland police said the 31-year-old was kicked out of the RiRa Irish Pub on Commercial Street around at 12:50 a.m. Sunday for being overly intoxicated.

Bihlmaier apparently did not return to his hotel room and hasn't been seen since.

Police tracked his cellphone calls and found he never left the city. Investigators said his cell phone battery died about 40 minutes after he was last seen.

Bihlmaier's friends said they searched along the water and found a piece of his clothing.  Divers found nothing in their initial search of Portland Harbor and returned to the waters off the Maine State Pier on Monday.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine divers are searching an area in Portland Harbor near the area where a Massachusetts man was last seen while spending a night out with friends.

Police say 31-year-old Nathan Bihlmaier of Cambridge, Mass., and two friends were at a bar in the city's Old Port late Saturday when he decided to leave early. His friends later went back to their hotel room but he never showed up. He was reported missing Sunday.

Portland police update search for missing man

Nathan Bihlmaier last seen Sunday morning in Old Port
UPDATED 4:44 PM EDT May 21, 2012

 ::snipping2::

In a Monday afternoon news conference Portland police said he was asked to leave the bar RiRa's because he was intoxicated. Police said his two friends did not see him leave and tried to reach him on his cellphone.

Police said the last conversation he had with his friends led them to believe he was lost.

"He was saying, 'I am in front of this building right now,' which is not uncommon for somebody that may be in fact lost to give a landmark in hopes somebody else can pin-point that," said Chief Michael Sauschuck.

Friends posted flyers across the Old Port hoping someone may have seen Bihlmaier.

Maine divers search for missing Harvard student who went missing after being asked to leave Portland pub

PORTLAND, Maine — Divers on Monday recovered some clothing belonging to a Massachusetts man who went missing after he was asked to leave a pub while celebrating his upcoming graduation from Harvard Business School, police said.

Nathan Bihlmaier, 31, of Cambridge, Mass., was celebrating with two classmates when a worker at the waterfront pub asked him to leave at 12:20 a.m. Saturday because he was visibly intoxicated, Police Chief Michael Sauschuck said. Bihlmaier failed to return to his hotel and was reported missing on Sunday.

Divers on Monday found an article of clothing belonging to Bihlmaier and planned to return to harbor waters on Tuesday. A sonar device was brought in for the search.

Police seek missing man with area ties

Police in Portland, Maine, are investigating the disappearance of a 31-year-old man who graduated from Osborne High School and the University of Kansas and was about to graduate from Harvard Business School.
 Nathan Bihlmaier, son of Steve and Cheryl Bihlmaier of Osborne and grandson of Gene and Peggy Bihlmaier of Salina, was last seen about 12:20 a.m. Sunday, when he had been celebrating with two classmates in advance of their graduation ceremony this Thursday.

The divers were scheduled to continue the search Monday evening and into Tuesday if necessary, and the state police were called to bring sonar equipment to search the bay floor, Sauschuck said. The sonar equipment will allow officials to expand the search beyond the piers off of Commercial Street, Sauschuck said.

Police have also analyzed phone and bank records and were in the process of checking surveillance videos from the area Bihlmaier was last seen in for signs of what had happened to him, Sauschuck said.

Each year, several people fall into the bay from the city's piers, and some result in fatalities, Sauschuck said.

Members of Bihlmaier's family and friends have come to Portland to assist with the search, Sauschuck said.

"Everybody has been incredibly cooperative," Sauschuck said. "No matter what happens ... it's a very traumatic time for the family."

Bihlmaier is married and was set to graduate from Harvard's business school this week.

"This is someone that's got a lot of resources and things that would lead you to believe he would want to be found," Sauschuck said.

Portland Police piecing together Nate Bihlmaier's final hours
May 22, 2012

 ::snipping2::
Shortly before noon Tuesday, Maine state police divers pulled a body from the water off Custom House Wharf behind a lobster pound.

“I saw the divers in the water, they had a tarp, like they were trying to gather something they found in the water, but I didn’t see what it was,” said Audrey Shutts, who witnessed the body being recovered.

Two hours later came the news 31-year-old Nate Bihlmaier’s family and friends had been dreading.

“Nathan was found in the water off Custom House Wharf at approximately 11:45 this morning,” said Portland Police Chief Mike Sauschuck.

The police chief says while the autopsy is still pending, there was no obvious indication a crime had been committed.

Police are now trying to piece together what happened in the final hour after a drunken Nate was asked to leave RiRa’s.

“We have seen a video which has Nate leaving RiRa’s, so that is confirmed, the 11:30 time frame. At 12:54 in the morning, that would be Sunday morning, we have confirmation that the cell phone was shut off.”

They are combing through surveillance video, hoping to trace his last steps, and exploring whether the bar should have done more to help an intoxicated customer.

“Our investigation is not complete at this point.”

Nate’s friends are trying to cope with a loss of a man who was married with a child on the way and just days away from graduating from the Harvard Business School.

“His family, his friends, we were all hoping that this would be a day when Nathan would be able to celebrate. Instead we stand here today in this most tragic circumstance with the saddest news that anyone could have heard,” said Nitnin Nohria, Dean of Harvard Business School.

Going forward, Portland police will be going through that surveillance video they’ve collected from up and down Commercial Street to see if they can pinpoint when and where Nate went into the water. They will also be looking into whether there was negligence on the part of the bar for letting someone so drunk wander out of the bar on his own Saturday night.

Why would the phone be shut off if he accidentally fell in?  Someone found it or will it do that when it hits water?  I hope there is more footage of him.  God Bless his soul and his family!

Harvard student's father retraces son's last steps
May 23, 2012

 ::snipping2::
Along the waterfront on Wednesday,  Portlands Police Chief Michael Sauschuck retraced Bihlmaier's final steps for his father Steve, explaining how – and most likely where – the Harvard Business School student fell into the water after a night of drinking.

"At this point we're trying to facilitate closure just to give the family as many answers as possible," said Chief Sauschuck.

And for the first time on Wednesday, the security manager who escorted Bihlmaier out of the bar Saturday night sheds light on his condition. Scott St. Ours, the Rira Irish Pub security manager, said Bihlmaier drank one or two beers during the hour he and two Harvard friends spent at Rira.

"We received a complaint about behavior and I asked crew to do some limited surveillance, kept an eye on him," said St. Ours.

When they observed Bihlmaier trip on some band equipment, St. Ours said he took action by escorting him out the door at 11:30 p.m.

"I offered him two cabs and, and asked where he was staying," said St. Ours. "He told me close and said he was close and I wished him a good night."

He stresses that this was not someone who in any way seemed a danger to himself.

"He was in the type of condition where you felt good about him leaving," said St. Ours. "He was not staggering, not falling."

What's still unclear is where he went after they parted ways on Commercial Street. Police say Bihlmaier made and received several calls and that he described a building that's probably the Customs House across the street.

There is still plenty of unaccounted for time before Bihlmaier's phone went dead just before one am.

"There's someplace that saw him after 11:30 and now they're probably afraid to come forward," said St. Ours.
 ::snipping2::
They are also reviewing surveillance video, hoping to trace the final moments of a life that ended much too soon.

Bihlmaier bar video a puzzle, chief says
It seems inconsistent with the Ri Ra security manager's account of the Harvard student's last hour, he says.
By David Hench
May 26, 2012

PORTLAND - The account given by the security manager at Ri Ra Irish Pub who told Nathan Bihlmaier to leave the bar shortly before he drowned in nearby Portland Harbor is not supported by videotape from the bar, police said Friday.
Police Chief Michael Sauschuck said the department's investigation into Bihlmaier's drowning early Sunday continues. He said he never suggested that Ri Ra acted inappropriately.

However, public statements by Scott St. Ours, the doorman who told Bihlmaier to leave at 11:20 p.m. May 19, seem inconsistent, Sauschuck said.

Bihlmaier and two friends had come to Portland's Old Port to celebrate their impending graduation from Harvard Business School. After being ejected from the bar, Bihlmaier got separated from his friends. He last spoke with them at 12:15 a.m. Sunday. His phone went dead at 12:54 a.m.

His body was found in deep water alongside Custom House Wharf on Tuesday.

St. Ours told television stations that he asked Bihlmaier to leave after Bihlmaier tripped over some band equipment. St. Ours said Bihlmaier left without argument and did not appear overly intoxicated.

"We were having a conversation ... (he) was not staggering," St. Ours said in an interview with WMTW-TV. "I took a walk with this gentleman, offered him a cab two times, asked him where he was staying.

"I wished him a good night at the end of it after he refused my second attempt to get him a cab," St. Ours said in the interview.

"His speech and his ability to walk was perfectly fine," St. Ours told WCSH-TV. "He walked down the sidewalk and I returned to Ri Ra's."

Police have said they do not know where Bihlmaier was for the 90 minutes after he left Ri Ra until his telephone went dead.

Sauschuck questioned whether someone St. Ours described as "a 2 out of 10" in terms of intoxication would be asked to leave the bar and offered a cab twice.

"He also states he walked him down the street because he was concerned about his well-being and offered to get him a taxi multiple times," Sauschuck said. "It just doesn't seem to fit that (low) level of intoxication.

"I have personally seen and read statements from individuals that witnessed Mr. Bihlmaier at various points in the evening, to include comments from an employee from Ri Ra's that leads us to believe that Nathan was intoxicated the night in question," Sauschuck said. "Ultimately, we'll reserve final judgment on that until when the medical examiner's toxicology comes back with the blood alcohol content."

The issue could be important if Ri Ra is accused of serving Bihlmaier after he was intoxicated. That is against the law.

St. Ours said the bar did not overserve Bihlmaier.

Sauschuck said the security video from the bar shows St. Ours escorting Bihlmaier from the bar and returning 28 seconds later, which Sauschuck said seems inconsistent with walking a block and a half with Bihlmaier. The video does not show the two outside the bar.

"I want to reconfirm, this has never been about Ri Ra's. That's the final location he was seen at," Sauschuck said.

Police continue to review videotape and examine receipts to determine where Bihlmaier was before and after he was at Ri Ra, said Sauschuck, who would not identify any of those locations.

Harvard student asked to leave bar for ‘bad behavior,’ not drunkenness
By Seth Koenig, BDN Staff
May 25, 2012

PORTLAND, Maine — Ri Ra Irish Pub officials said Friday that when Harvard Business School student Nathan Bihlmaier left their pub, his intoxication level was judged to be a 2 out of 10. It was his behavior, not drunkenness, that caused them to ask him to leave their Portland establishment late Saturday night.

Bihlmaier, 31, disappeared early Sunday morning and was found dead late Tuesday morning in Portland Harbor. The cause of death was determined to be accidental drowning.

He was in the Old Port with two Harvard classmates to celebrate their upcoming business school graduation when he was asked to leave Ri Ra because, police officials have said, he was “visibly intoxicated.”

In their first interview since the incident, Jay Luther, owner of the 12 Ri Ra Irish Pubs nationwide, and Northeast Group Business Manager James Thompson told the Bangor Daily News Friday Bihlmaier was asked to leave primarily because of bad behavior, not drunkenness.

They also said Scott St. Ours, the security manager at the Portland pub, offered to procure Bihlmaier a taxi from a nearby cab stand, but Bihlmaier declined because he was staying at the Hilton Garden Inn across the street.

“Scott stated to us and to officers, he offered him a cab multiple times,” Thompson said. “Scott observed his behavior. He felt like he wasn’t staggering, he was speaking clearly. He was doing the most he could without forcing something on Nathan. That’s above and beyond what Maine state law says. Scott indicated that on a scale of 1 to 10 [in terms of intoxication], he was a 2. His eyes were not glassed over, and he was walking straight.”

“He was not falling over drunk,” Luther confirmed.

However, the Ri Ra officials said, he was acting inappropriately. They declined to describe in detail what actions caused Bihlmaier to be asked to leave out of respect for his family.

“He was removed for observed behavior that goes beyond drunkenness,” Luther said. “His behavior was first brought to our attention by a customer.”

St. Ours witnessed Bihlmaier turning west on Commercial Street, Thompson said, after he was escorted from the premises around 11:30 p.m.

Police have reported that Bihlmaier later spoke to his friends by cellphone at 12:15 a.m. near a building he didn’t recognize but described to friends — investigators later came to believe it was the U.S. Custom House on Commercial Street — and his cellphone stopped transmitting at 12:54 a.m. It remains unclear whether his cellphone stopped transmitting because its battery was drained or because it was underwater.
 ::snipping2::
Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck told reporters this week his department is attempting to piece together Bihlmaier’s final hours and determine how he ended up in the water by watching streetside security video footage from establishments along Commercial Street.

Early on in the investigation, police reported finding an article of clothing in Portland Harbor near the Maine State Pier, two wharves east of the Custom House Wharf.
