Suspect in Ga. girl's slaying held without bond

 ::snipping2::

Ryan Brunn, who lived and worked at the apartment complex, made his first appearance in Cherokee County Superior Court in an orange jumpsuit and vest. He answered the judge's questions quietly and appeared nervous as he surveyed the crowded courtroom.

Murder suspect Ryan Brunn made his first court appearance Thursday in Cherokee County Superior Court in connection with the slaying of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera of Canton.

Wearing an orange jail suit and a bulletproof vest, Brunn was led into the courtroom in downtown Canton and sat beside two court-appointed public defenders.

The 20-year-old suspect showed little emotion as charges were read against him.

Brunn, of Dahlonega, is accused of gagging, binding, raping, beating and stabbing Jorelys before tossing her body into an industrial trash compactor at the apartment complex where they both lived.

He had moved to the River Ridge complex in November, and was employed as a maintenance worker.

Brunn told Judge Frank Mills on Thursday that he had only completed the 10th grade and that he had no family members present in the courtroom.

20-year-old arrested in brutal child slaying

Quote
Just five months ago, the man now charged with the brutal murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera took to his Facebook page to rail against Casey Anthony's acquittal in her daughter's death.
That will come back to bite him.

Quote
Her mouth was duct-taped, her hands and feet bound with plastic ties, and her body had been compacted by the mechanical dumpster only operable by maintenance staff.

That same night, Brunn coolly joined in the search for the missing girl, helping to distribute fliers bearing her picture, other residents told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Poor baby.  How scared she must've been.
I shutter just thinking of her fear and the pain she endured.

Ryan Brunn's trail contains few clues

Quote
"He's separated from other inmates," Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said after the hearing.

Brunn's next court appearance is expected in January.

Ryan and his four brothers were foster children, according to documents their mother, Karen Whiteley, submitted Dec. 2 as part of a bankruptcy filing. That was also the day that, according to police, Brunn beat, raped and stabbed Jorelys in a vacant apartment in the complex where he had recently started work as a groundskeeper.

The meager picture that emerges in Dahlonega is of a family under stress. In the bankruptcy filing, Whiteley listed her sole income over the past three years as child support and an "adoption stipend" received from the state of New York, where the family lived before coming to Georgia. In 2009 and 2010, the stipend came to $48,000; this year it was $40,000.

Two months ago, the family left the home Whiteley owned in Dahlonega and moved to another house. Thursday, no one answered the phone number listed under her name.

Documents from the Division of Family and Children Services reveal that the mother, identified by a family attorney as Joselinne Rivera, was investigated several months ago for improper supervision of the children.

On at least two occasions, Jorelys was temporarily missing after school and found at a neighbor's house. School officials and her mother disagreed over whether the mother had been present to greet her daughter as she got off the school bus. On one of those occasions, Jorelys later told school officials her mother had been “too sick” to get her at the stop.

Then, in February, Jorelys once again had no one to meet her at the bus stop, and the driver took her back to the school, according to the report. The incident prompted someone from her school to contact DFCS.

A case manager who visited the home found no signs of abuse and a safety plan was written.

IMO, those younger children should not have been given back to this woman.  She failed to properly supervise Jorelys.  She bares some responsibility in this terrible event.

"We have had several instances where some questionable things have happened," said Brittany Partin, who also lives next door. "There's just been several things where we were caught off guard but we didn't know what to do."

In one example, Partin said Brunn punched his family dog in the face

Rage.  I'll bet there were other incidents that friends witnessed and just didn't put together as important.

Services held for slain 7-year-old Georgia girl
December 10, 2011

Mourners released white doves at services Saturday for Jorelys Rivera, the 7-year-old girl who was abducted and killed near her north Georgia home.

Pallbearers carried her white casket, which was covered with flowers and a small Puerto Rican flag.

"To see everyone today, and the amount of people that honestly weep and mourn for her, is incredible," Veronica Best, a family friend, told CNN affiliate WGCL.

"She was so playful and just full of love," Best said about Jorelys.

The girl's body will be flown to Puerto Rico, where she has relatives.

7-Year-Old Georgia Girl, Jorelys Rivera, Buried in Puerto Rico
December 13, 2011

Hundreds turned out for the Puerto Rico funeral of a 7-year-old Georgia girl who was killed earlier this month.

Jorelys Rivera was buried in a white dress and white flowers adorning her hair. Her casket was filled with some of her favorite toys.

A memorial service was held for Jorelys this past weekend in Georgia, where she lived, but her body was flown to Puerto Rico and she was laid to rest in her hometown.

Joselinne Rivera tells The Associated Press she appreciates her community's support following the death of her daughter.

A gathering for Jorelyn last Saturday drew hundreds to the First Baptist Church in Georgia, where doves were released at the end of the service. It was followed by a private ceremony at a local funeral home.

NOTICE:  It appears this is only  rumor/speculation.

CANTON | Speculation raises fear in Jorelys Rivera murder investigation
Written by

CANTON, Ga. -- Rumors were flying Tuesday at the apartment complex where 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera was murdered. There's talk now of a second suspect and some residents are so much on edge they're talking about moving out.
 ::snipping2::
In the Jorelys murder investigation so little information has been released that residents are starting to speculate even believing a second suspect is on the loose.

"That's the rumor I heard that there was another suspect that this guy didn't do it that another person did," said Tim, who didn't want his last name used.

But GBI investigators say 'no'. They have their man. What they are not saying is much about the evidence found to put the current suspect, 20-year-old Ryan Brunn, behind bars.

"He's confused, concerned, scared," Brunn's defense attorney David Cannon said Tuesday.
Cannon hasn't seen any physical evidence gathered by the GBI. All he knows is what he says he's heard the director of the GBI express publicly.

"That he's got evidence of blood and things of that nature maybe other physical evidence found at the scene that he believes ties to my client," Cannon said.  "I don't have any idea yet whether that's true or not."

Cannon won't have access to discovery material until after a grand jury is convened.

Cherokee sheriff: Mistake made during Rivera investigation

Quote
It was only when the GBI arrived and began debriefing everyone on the evening of Dec. 4 that the two officers reported being in a vacant apartment filled with trash and seeing a small amount of blood "like you would see with a nosebleed," Garrison said. That apartment, police think, was the crime scene.

"These officers both feel extremely bad about what happened," Garrison said. "They thought they were doing the best they could. They were moving to other parts of the building to try to get a lot accomplished very fast and in their haste, they made a mistake."

I hope this won't impact the case but you know the defense attys will love it.  I'll bet those officers don't have a lot of training in searching for a child.  I sort of feel sorry for them.  They were looking for a child not a murder scene.

Canton man indicted in Jorelys Rivera slaying

The indictment also indicates that Brunn had sexually explicit photographs of a young girl in his possession.

I've said all along that this wasn't his first attack on a child.  LE really needs to investigate him thoroughly!

According to the indictment, Brunn bound Rivera's hands with plastic ties and taped a rag into her mouth before he beat her with a "hammer-like object," cut her throat and stabbed her in the chest. Authorities say Brunn also molested the girl.

Brunn had pornographic material of a young female child in his possession, according to the indictment.
