ANTON, Ga. -- The body of a 7-year-old girl who had been missing since Friday was found Monday afternoon in a dumpster from her apartment complex.

GBI Director Vernon Keenan said it appears Jorelys Rivera was severely beaten and sexually assaulted.

"This is going to be a very horrendous crime," Keenan said shortly after 2 p.m. Monday. "I'm convinced of that after observing the body."

Keenan said the dumpster where the girl's body was found was heavily compacted and had not been searched before. Early Monday afternoon, police moved the dumpster from the River Ridge Apartments to a field off Reinhardt College Parkway, so they could sift through its contents.
Jorelys' body was taken to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy. A murder investigation is now underway. So far, Keenan said "We do not have a strong suspect."

The girl had been in the care of a teenage family friend when she disappeared Friday. She was last seen at a playground in her apartment complex. Canton Police Detective Candy Worthy said Jorelys had gone back to her apartment to get a drink.

Police weren't able to issue a Levi's Call, because no witnesses came forward to confirm an abduction. Investigators nonetheless treated it as one, pulling resources from across the state and even calling in the FBI.
On Sunday night, investigators searched the family's van and took evidence bags out of their apartment.

Police said the family has cooperated throughout the investigation. But Jorelys' mother still lost custody of her two younger children, at least temporarily. She appeared in family court Monday.  The outcome of that appearance was not immediately reported.

"We don't think the child's mother had anything to do with her disappearance at this point," Det. Worthy said. "We just think that she was not supervising well enough to keep all of the children safe."

"I am a very good mother," Joselin said Monday. "I'm a very hard-working mother. My kids have everything they need. Everything is in order. They have their room. They have their food. They don't want for anything."

Jorelys' father lives in Florida, but he arrived in Canton Saturday to try to help with the search.

Here's a crazy thought.  The apt complex was gated.  Why not shut the place down as soon as the 911 call was placed and search the entire thing until the child was found?  Someone living in that complex did this.

Many apartment complexes do background checks and if you are a felon or a sex offender, for example, they might not lease to you.  However, as we've seen in some cases in the past, sex offenders can be relatives, boy friends and etc.  They may not be on the lease, but they might be staying or visiting.  Also, gated complexes aren't as secure as they may seem.  A person without a gate code can follow another through the gate, or they can be allowed in as a guest.  Also, there are others that have access such as pizza delivery and etc.

My brother was LE in this area for 3 years.  There is a large population of illegals.  He worked in cooperation with the US Marshal Service periodically to round up felons.  The spread of Atl into northern GA has included illegals, gangs, and those less inclined to obey the law.  He just took another job as of Dec 1 in another part of GA or he'd have been helping search for little Jorelys. 

I've read renters' comments that the gate for this complex had one number and everyone knew it.  Not very secure at all in my opinion.

reading her fb posts, if she really wants to protect her own child, a girl, why is she living with a convicted sex offender with her child???
