Ray Gricar: Missing DA back in the news after Sandusky indicted

Ray Gricar was a Centre County District Attorney in Pennsylvania and disappeared in April of 2005.  He was declared dead by a Pennsylvania Judge in July 2011.

Now Gicar is back in the news because he did not prosecute Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky for alleged sex crimes in 1998.

Gricar, as the DA, investigated allegations that Sandusky inappropriately touched an 11-year-old boy in 1998.  In the end Gricar decided not to prosecute Sandusky.

Now 13 years later, Sandusky has been indicted on 40 counts of sex crimes against boys.  The Grand Jury report cites 8 victims from 1994 to 2009.

Sandusky is charged with multiple counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of a child, indecent assault and unlawful contact with a minor, as well as single counts of aggravated indecent assault and attempted indecent assault, according to the dailymail.

According to Gricar's 1998 report, he did not prosecute Sandusky at the time because he decided that the claims were "unfounded."

Many back up Gricar's decision and friends and former co-workers said Gricar would never have backed down if he had a strong case against Sandusky, 13 years ago, according to the Patriot-News.

Tony Gricar, Ray's nephew believes his uncle did not proceed with the case because there was not enough evidence at the

Questions on Sandusky Are Wrapped in a 2005 Mystery
November 8, 2011

Michelle Klein/Centre Daily Times, via Associated Press
In 2005, divers searched the Susquehanna River in Lewisburg, Pa., for Ray Gricar, who was a Centre County prosecutor.

One of the questions surrounding the sex-abuse case against Jerry Sandusky is why a former district attorney chose not to prosecute the then-Penn State assistant coach in 1998 after reports surfaced that he had inappropriate interactions with a boy.
The answer is unknowable because of an unsolved mystery: What happened to Ray Gricar, the Centre County, Pa., district attorney?

Gricar went missing in April 2005. The murky circumstances surrounding his disappearance — an abandoned car, a laptop recovered months later in a river without a hard drive, his body was never found — have spawned Web sites, television programs and conspiracy theories. More than six years later, the police still receive tips and reports of sightings. The police in central Pennsylvania continue to investigate even though Gricar’s daughter, Lara, successfully petitioned in July to have her father declared legally dead so the family could find some closure and begin dividing his estate.

Yet as the Sandusky investigation moves forward, questions will be asked anew about why Gricar did not pursue charges against him 13 years ago. A small but strident minority believes Gricar did not want to tackle a case that involved a hometown icon. Others who knew and worked with Gricar say he was a meticulous, independent and tough-minded prosecutor who was unbowed by Penn State, its football program and political pressure in general.

“No one got a bye with Ray,” said Anthony De Boef, who worked as an assistant district attorney under Gricar for five years. “He didn’t care who you were; he had a job to do.”

De Boef said Gricar did not share any information with him about the case in 1998, which involved Sandusky allegedly showering with an 11-year-old boy. Gricar, he said, reviewed the police reports in private including, presumably, notes or recordings of two conversations that the police heard between Sandusky and the boy’s mother. But Gricar had a reputation for thoroughness, and if he thought he had enough to charge Sandusky, he would have, De Boef and other lawyers said.

Still, the circumstances surrounding Gricar’s disappearance prompt many questions.

Cyril Wecht: Centre County DA's Disappearance Linked To PSU Scandal
November 17, 2011

PITTSBURGH -- Dr. Cyril Wecht, well-known forensic pathologist, said he believes the disappearance of a Centre County District Attorney is somehow linked to the Penn State sex abuse scandal.

"I believe that his disappearance is almost certainly related to this Penn State debacle," Wecht said.

Ray Gricar disappeared in 2005 and was declared dead earlier this year.

"You've got his car being found, locked with cellphones inside. The computers found and the hard drive is found there in the river. The body is never found," Wecht said. "Looks to me like it was staged."

Ray Gricar Opted Not To Prosecute Sandusky In 1998, Went Missing In 2005
November 7, 2011

 ::snipping2::
Whether Gricar decided to disappear and likely kill himself over the Sandusky allegations or something completely unrelated, we'll probably know. That said, police revealed that Gricar's home computer had saved searches for "how to wreck a hard drive" and "water damage to a notebook computer," meaning that he clearly wanted to make sure something never saw the light of day.

I don't understand how there is no system of checks and balances in the DA's office.  Why does someone in that office not know Ray's thoughts on this case?

The John Doe has some unique ears ... check out the ear shape compared to Gricar. I'd be curious as to the hairline of John doe, looks like Gricar's was seriously receding. Interesting to say the least.

Yeah...it's pretty interesting to say the least.  Wonder if he did fall victim to some foul play like so many suggest or if he followed in his brother's footsteps and committed suicide?  Or just left?

I really would like to know what happened to RG.  IF he helped in a cover-up I would think that someone somewhere could show it.  IF he did not, why would he be hiding out?  This is the stuff of soap operas.

Do you read over at Blink's, Kittymom?  She has "Ray Gricar" in categories.  Go to the link below and look at "Al's" post  in the comments on December 18, 2011 and Blink's reply to it.  Interesting, imo.
